"Feather-footed through the plashy fen passes the questing vole.", William Boot in Scoop, by Evelyn Waugh. . Have you walked across plashy fen, aka your lawn, and knew what your feet were feeling? Have you considered the vole/mole who creates the squoosh? Not me either. Waugh's sentence, above, probably the funniest sentence I've read in 2 decades. . In a client's garden, after noticing 'squoosh', I'll say, "You've got moles." Quickly arrives the client's mole face, I-don't-know-what-this-is-but-it's-obviously-bad-look. . Bottom line best option to get rid of moles? A garden cat. Traps or chemicals are not for me. Pic, above, here. Voles/moles do have a wicked sense of humor, manifested in an obvious manner. Choosing gardens to dine upon they will choose the garden, above. Why opt for the garden, below, zero impact to the owner. Pic, above, here. . My garden cat, Torte-de-Shelle, always brought her mole conquests to the back door. I promptly tossed them under a bush somewhere to feed the soil. . Garden & Be Well, XO Tara

Don't let a small space limit you from transforming a small space into a reading sanctuary.
A couple of weeks ago, tucked away down the longest driveway ever, we found our favourite NGS garden so far. Rolf’s Farm is a magically wild and rambling place, a place where roses tumble over walls and fences, where deep red and pale pink scabious dance atop the long grasses in the waist height meadows
Mrs. Roosevelt lived on the bottom floors from 1959 up to her death in 1962, hosting the likes of John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev.
Architecture is meant to fulfill both practical and expressive requirements, and thus it serves both utilitarian and aesthetic purposes. When you look at a structure, you can distinguish these two ends but they cannot be separated, and the relative weight each of them carry can vary widely. Plus, every society has its own, unique relationship to the natural world and its architecture usually reflects that as well, allowing people from other places to learn about their environment, as well as history, ceremonies, artistic sensibility, and many aspects of daily life.
Someone finally bought the spooky house in the first season of American Horror Story.

No internet. No neighbors. Just miles and miles of trees, hills, and lakes. Sounds so relaxing, doesn't it? We all sometimes need to unwind, and nature can provide the perfect environment for it. Peaceful yet engaging. All you need is a place to sleep. Sure, a tent might do but if you own a patch of land, why not put a cabin on it?

April 28, 2009. 81 West Main Street, Mt. Kisco NY. I drive by this amazing Victorian twice a month and finally found a place to park my truck and a good day for a photo shoot. The address is 81 West Main Street, Mount Kisco, New York. "THE fate of a Victorian mansion that has twice achieved national celebrity and has long been a source of pride to this village has changed directions once again. The stately gray home has over the last year become the center of a controversy that continues to rankle residents....." NY Times August 20, 1995

Ok, so nothing like a little color/texture punch of fabric and wildflowers to get me all amped up for summer weekends, so I decided that, during the summer (trying to keep all things in moderation)…

I have long been a fan of Kate Owen. Her quilts, inspired by American folk traditions, are magnificent. I have been eyeing up one for some time; as soon as I get into my one-day house, you can betcha bottom dollar one of these babies will be strapped to a wall. Until then, I have made do with her Instagram. No bad thing, as this is where I first glimpsed her house and had the bright idea to ask her to do Knock Knock! You are more than welcome, as it's a real doozy. In my final year at Central St

Snowstorm Harper is heading our way and that prompted me to finally finish a post I have been taking notes for, well, forever! Winter can get long and dark, and if you have kids, it can be straight up cabin fever after too many days stuck inside. Last time we had a bunch of snow/no…

Popular in 17th- and 18th-century America for its ability to accommodate large families, the saltbox house features a catslide roof that extends below the eaves, creating one story that juts out on the back of the home and two or more on the front. The genius of the design is that any ordinary colonial home could be quickly and affordably upgraded to a saltbox simply by adding a leaning rafter to the rear. Specimens of this type of residence still stand to this day. Scroll through to see some of the most iconic examples of saltboxes in the country.
