when orangewetland suggested shadowfokd flagstones I was very sceptical. I thought these should be possible but would be very hard to do because they're often so tough to make from paper. turns out that in fabric pretty easy, though. the process is very straight-forward. when you have a crease pattern with the flagstone polygons what you want to do is bringing the polygons together. and then you have the points where several polygons share a corner. on the back you will get a waterbomb structure. the challenge in paper is now to make something sensible with the waterbomb and collapse it along the grid. in fabric though, you just have to sew the polygons' corners together. afterwards you can squash the stuff on the back (doesn't matter if gets ugly, you're not gonna show it) or you can leave it three-dimensional which actually is pretty cool. for this picture I tried the simplest flagstone pattern. and actually the hexagons formed all by themselves, there was no shaping applied. I could press the hexagon edges flat to get something similar to this effect but I really like them puffy and cushion-ish. and I love the circles that arise this way.
A hexagon motif is not that hard to make, don't assume it's too complicated, if you can crochet a granny square then you can easily make one of these.
