Our botanical and bird prints each come in three sizes: 5x7, 8x10, and 11x14. Our fish prints also come in 3 sizes, but slightly different: 6x9, 9x12, and 12x16. These prints are all available plain, matted, and framed with or without mats, with the exception that 5x7 and 6x9 are not available framed without mats. About Frame Sizes Frames are designated and referred to by the size of their opening, NOT by their outside dimensions. This is the industry convention and makes standardizing frames easier. An 8x10 frame is an 8x10 frame is an 8x10 frame, regardless of whether the frame molding is half an inch wide or 3" wide. Any frame described as an 8x10 has an opening sized to fit an 8x10 print or photo perfectly. Print Size Matted Size No Mat/Frame* Mat/Frame* 5x7 8x10 N/A 8x10 8x10 11x14 8x10 11x14 11x14 16x20 11x14/13x16 16x20 6x9 9x12 N/A 9x12 9x12 12x16 9x12 12x16 12x16 16x20 12x16 16x20 *Add 2" to each number to calculate outside frame dimensions for our frames. If using your own frame, add 2x its molding width to each number. How much Wall Space? To know the true amount of wall space a framed print will occupy, you must add the width of the frame molding on all sides to the standard designated size of the frame. The molding width of all the frames we sell is approximately 1". Therefore, you must add 2" (1" left and right, 1" top and bottom) to each dimension to get the finished size: 8x10 is really 10x12, 11x14 is really 13x16, 16x20 is really 18x22, etc.

Louis William Wain (1860 – 1939) was an English artist best known for his illustrations of anthropomorphised large-eyed cats and kittens. His illustrations showed cats playing musical instruments, serving tea, playing cards, fishing, smoking, and enjoying a night at the opera. Wain was a prolific artist, sometimes producing as many as several hundred drawings a year. For more biographical notes, and for earlier works, see parts 1 - 9 also. A year later, he was discovered there and his circumstances were widely publicised, leading to appeals from such figures as H.G. Wells and the personal intervention of the Prime Minister. Wain was transferred to the Bethlem Royal Hospital in Southwark, and again in 1930 to Napsbury Hospital near St Albans in Hertfordshire, north of London. This hospital was relatively pleasant, with a garden and colony of cats, and he spent his final 15 years there in peace. While he became increasingly deluded, his erratic mood swings subsided, and he continued drawing for pleasure. His work from this period is marked by bright colours, flowers, and intricate and abstract patterns, though his primary subject remained the same.

The Little Shop is now home to a shelfload of vintage Pan paperbacks (or will be once I've sorted them out). They're wonderful old things, all sporting covers of the 'they don't make them like that any more' variety. Except, they do. Thanks to some enterprising fans and artists, 'vintage-style pulp paperback covers for books which never had them originally' has become a very entertaining little artistic subgenre. Speaking of Pan paperbacks, a fellow calling himself Honeypot Designs has repurposed some original art (mostly by Sam Peffer) to create some cracking James Bond covers for titles which were never in Pans of that era: He's also done some rather good Richard Chopping pastiches. Here's the one for Solo, the most recent Bond novel: For Doctor Who fans of a certain age, the novelisations by Target Books are possibly even more fondly remembered than the actual programmes themselves (certainly, the special effects were always better), and many talented Whovians have busied themselves providing covers to more recent stories which never got the Target treatment. There's scores of them on the web, but here's a small selection. I especially like the way that some of them change the title of the original episode to something more 'exciting', just like Target used to do: A final mention has to go to Timothy Anderson, who has created some bang-on pulp covers for Blade Runner and Star Wars, plus poster art for the original trilogy reimagined as spaghetti westerns. Here they all are (and if you want copies for your wall, all these and more are available at his Print Store).

Christo and Jean Claude are a married couple who have changed the landscape of installation art as we know it. Christo and Jean Claude seek to cover all areas of a space by draping various types of fabric over hundreds of feet and sometimes almost a mile in length. Imagine when you were a child and your parents tucked you into bed at night, the feeling of the blanket running across your body, eventually engulfing you in it's size was soothing and comforting. Christo and Jean Claude accomplish the same effect or feeling in nature and in the city. Their most recent project came in 2005 installed in New York City's Central Park, "The Gates", in which they constructed hundreds of orange painted metal "gates" with hanging and flowing pieces of orange fabric throughout the entire park. The hanging fabric changed the landscape of Central Park and gave the viewer a constant reminder of the art of installation.
