"Floral Symphony No. 2" by Mariya Waters won Best Stationary Machine Workmanship at AQS QuiltWeek Daytona 2024.
In this last post about the Tokyo International Great Quilt Festival 2016 I will show an odd selection of pictures. First is a detail of one of the framed quilts: 'From now on, enjoy' by Kayoko Kubo*「これから楽しみ」久保佳代子 ........... This was my absolute favourite: 'A gentle moment' by Ms Itoh (whose first name is read in either of these ways: Hiroko, Sachiko, Yoshiko or Masako, I think)*「優しいひととき」伊藤祐子 Isn't the quilt design just perfect? Here is a quilt I liked, with the moon reflected in water: made by Chizuko Takiyama*「水画(みなもも)の月」瀧山千津子 ............. As you can see, this is not a quilt. It is paper poster for a 'poster quilt', featuring none other than Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit. So why does it say 'poster quilt' and Yoko Saito? Well, Yoko Saito and her group so successfully made the Moomin quilts two years ago. This year they took up the challenge of making quilts for 'The World of Peter Rabbit' to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Ms Potter's birth. Yoko Saito, herself, made this quilt: and it was featured on the official poster for the quilt show Pretty good, don't you think? To see more quilts from Beatix Potter's designs, check out Michelle Hill's report. .............. I end this report with a quilt called 'Kiitos' by Chikako Ueno*上野知佳子 Kiitos is Finnish and means Thank you. Chikako Ueno is a master quilter and apart from wall quilts makes beautiful bags (you can see one on the floor). She is a friend of my friend Julie, and told me she got the Finnish Marimekko fabric used in this wall quilt from a friend in Finland. Talking of friends, Tanya made me this beautiful tatted bookmark. Kiitos, Tanya! So on this note of friendship I leave you with a big 'Kiitos' for reading my report. PS. Tanya has just posted lots of beautiful photos of Log Cabin quilts. Don't miss them!

Hi there, I have a beautiful quilt to share with you today!!!
Cleaning was inevitable. It had to happen.... I rarely custom quilt for customers anymore but I have a few ladies who have been with me from my beginning who I will always quilt for. This particular lady loves the asian panels and I have really enjoyed quilting these tops. There are a wealth of quilting designs to be found in the fabric and I have always felt comfortable playing with the lush traditional Japanese motifs. I auditioned threads to get the process started. I will probably choose the lightest thread you see. And despite my dislike of changing threads I will likely switch on the ivory, to... ivory. My default thread color choice is almost always the lightest color present in the quilt top. My machine and I love Superior Threads. So Fine 50 wt. thread is what I use for the majority of my long-arm quilting. Studio clean, quilt loaded, now what? You guessed it....Plexiglas. The Plexiglas had a boxy maze drawn on it already, instead of erasing it I laid it down and used it as a starting point. I liked the way it looked over the circle, so I left it and started adding straight line work mixed with a tracing of the Japanese water and flower motifs. Moving the Plexiglas from the quilt top to a white table, gives a different perspective, enabling you to see the quilting design independent of the quilt top. It's a great opportunity to start evaluating how the quilting works or doesn't work compositionally on its own. I like where it's going but the circles need more definition, at this point I decide to get rid of the boxy maze outside of the circle and define the circles with a quarter inch (ish) echo. hmm... it's ok but something isn't quite right. I feel like the density of the quilting in the circles is too heavy. Densely quilted areas are going to recede while the areas that are less densely quilted are going to pop. In this case I would prefer that the background recede not the circles... back to the drawing board so to speak. I leave the boxy maze but change the scale, I do like a quilting design that maintains a similar density throughout. All the straight line work is still too much of the same for me, there is not a strong delineation between background and foreground. I am going to lose the boxy maze and add swirls to the background area to define and simplify the space. I like the feel of where this is going, I think it is starting to work more fluidly with the quilt top. I love working through my designs this way, I am able to see a lot of different ideas come to life without committing to anything. I will continue working out the kinks in this quilting design but I feel more confident in my direction and don't feel like I am just staring at a blank canvas any longer. I hope this gives you some ideas on how to make friends with your Plexiglas. I will leave you with a couple finished Asian panel quilt details, the first quilt is the back of an owl panel, the second and third are Kimono quilts, all pieced by Carlene Embry. Have a wonderful week.
I have had this quilt top finished for 10 years... These are gorgeous Hoffman floral fabrics It is time to baste it and get it under the needle... 505 Spray......my favorite basting spray. This quilt is all about the fabrics... very little of the machine quilting is prominent. Try as I may, I just can't get a good shot of the stitching... Lavender Binding... Floral Monet Half Log Cabin Blocks.....set on point It's good to get this one done! CLICK HERE: to see My Quilts May Your Bobbin Always Be Full, LuAnn Kessi

Magnolia, a paper pieced pattern by The Designer's Workshop. This was by far the most complex paper pieced project I have done. I really like this technique. I've also sewn several Karen K. Stones quilts as well as a few from Judy Niemeyer.

I cannot believe it is almost a week since I last wrote and boy did this week disappear fast! Each week passes and I think what shall I blog about?.....well more of the same I guess so sorry if it bores you - one day I might get back to some intellectual stuff about Mr Morris or maybe Beatrix! It has been a week of more birthday celebrations so I am quite enjoying it despite the pre-Christmas frenzy! I've received some lovely cards and gifts but I have saved a couple to open on Sunday! Saturday morning we had a lovely time in Penny's shop signing books and meeting many smiling faces - thanks so much Penny and everyone who came.......(and your quilt is still safe and greatly admired Helen!)..... I enjoy making gifts for others but this time I've been on the receiving end of this kindness......... Some of my special friends who came on the William Morris tour some weeks back gave me this beautiful tablecloth for my birthday......... I had it in my hot little hands to buy at the Kelmscott Manor gift shop and Faye swiftly took it from me and said I might get it later! Thankyou girls.......it is very special and what a wonderful time we had too!..... On Monday I received a lovely William Morris journal from Rosie. and a handmade bowl from Janie - and all entirely hand stitched (and Rosie and I have talked Janie into a sewing day so she can show us how to make them too!). Janie even wrapped it in a Beatrix Potter tea towel.....thankyou Janie and Rosie..... And another quilting friend Raelene gave me this beautifully stitched and framed piece with a gorgeous rose filled card with this message..."A special birthday - have a great day on the 18th, and here is a little gift to remind you of your roses when they are not in bloom"!.........very special - thankyou Raelene........ This is another piece of Raelene's work that I have had for a while - it now hangs in my kitchen. The theme was "tea" and the words surrounding the block include serendipi-tea, novel-tea, irregulari-tea, speciali-tea etc.......very clever and I love it....... And today I received this gorgeous Christmas quilt from Kitty who has made several of us a handmade gift every year for many, many years. I just love that it is an elf - thankyou Kitty x...... I have also been in the "Handmade with love" mode with some of my own stitched gifts for Maisie. (wish I could come up with something creative for an almost 5 year-old boy though!). I have recently been enjoying making fabric covered boxes so thought I would try and make a house. I've made up a 'no glue' method of stitching sleeves and inserting stiff cardboard into the sleeves, so the prototytype was started using left over fabrics (from the new cushion cover), and it worked so well that it was too late to appliqué what I wanted! So with great difficulty I managed some very lopsided windows and a door (a 2 year-old won't mind!). I did find some iron-on motifs that worked well though........ I've attached handles to this little house so that Maisie can carry it around and the front opens to reveal a space for some new little Lalaloopsy dolls that she loves. I selected a sewing theme and there is even a tiny little sewing machine........ And yes the cushion for the new seat is all finished too......... Then it was a pattern that I've had for a while.......some beautiful quilted butterfly wings designed by Wife Made. The pattern was so easy and convenient to download immediately......so another gift for Dec 25th ticked off......(and do visit Xanthe's site as it is just gorgeous)....... Sunday night was our annual Carols in the park close to home. The country fire service boys delivered Santa at the end of the night and Beau was very disappointed that he didn't get to chat to him as he was mobbed by so many little people. I left my camera home so dusk wasn't ideal so some earlier photos before the sunset from my phone..... On a final note I wanted to share an email I received last week from Jan in Victoria. She has completed her May Morris sampler and it is just beautiful. I love the hand embroidered details........ Thank you Jan for allowing me to share your work. And while I was typing away on this post I received another email from Michelle of Golden Harvest quilters asking for my postal address. After my response she sent me a photo of the very same quilt made by her .....and she won the Viewer's Choice award as well at their recent display....congratulations Michelle (and Margo's two smaller Morris quilts either side too!).......thanks for sharing...... Well that's it for another week.......lots of hugs to all our friends reading this!
Looking at Sublime, I just feel happy! Don't you?! Its such a unique floral quilt and allows for so much personal creativity. Its also SUPER easy and SUPER fun to make! Sublime is made using my "impressionist" method. This means it has more of an abstract, painterly feel, there are no set "rules" for how it must
