FLUORITE FORMATION IN ALPINE SLITS The early stages of the Alpine Orogeny began about 80 million years ago, with the compression of the Earth's crust as the African plate plunged beneath Europe. The rock units were bent, pushed and piled on top of each other to a depth of several kilometers in some places, forming the complex nappe structures of the central massifs. Under these conditions, most rocks were at least slightly metamorphosed, eg. much granite became Orthogneiss - and the rocks were extensively fractured and sheared. What would later become crystal-lined clefts causing cleft-like tension notches (or "pressure shadows") with long axes perpendicular to the main stress vectors. But the splits could only form this way when the rock became cold enough for plastic deformation to cease and fractures to form. In granites and gneisses such as those of the central Aar and Mont Blanc Massifs, the threshold temperature for the ductile/brittle transition is between 300 [degrees] and 500 [degrees] C (Graeser, 1998 ). This agrees with Zopfi's (1993) estimate that the first hydrothermal solutions began to flow through the newly formed Aar fissures at a temperature of about 500 degrees C. Zopfi further clarifies that at this time- there the pressure was over 2 kilobars (over 2000 atmospheres), and the cleft zone was about 10 km below the surface. The orogenic uplift that first brought the rocks close enough to the surface for the first splits to form was dated by Stalder et al. (1998) 17 million years ago for the Saint-Gothard and by Macchieraldo (2005) and Poty and Cathelineau (1999) at 18.5 million years ago for the Mont-Blanc massif; probably the date because the Aare massif is similar.
