Hosta Sum and Substance is a popular shade-loving plant that easily brings personality to a yard. Easily brighten up the shady areas of your yard with these leafy herbaceous perennials! The bright green leaf color, large heart-shaped foliage, and low-mounding form makes this plant ideal for a wide variety of landscape projects. Gentle lavender flowers grace the Sum and Substance Hosta in late summer, giving just another reason to love these hardy yard plants! The S&S Hosta performs best outdoors in a perennial garden when planted in part shade to full shade. It's important to note that Hosta Sum and Substance can handle some bright, indirect light or morning sun, but the delightful foliage will burn in conditions of heavy full sun exposure. Hosta growing conditions are best in early spring so the plant can best adapt to its surroundings. The Sum and Substance plant will grow best in a moist, well-drained soil medium. Unlike other Hosta, Sum and Substance are very large, reaching heights of 2 to 3 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide. As a result, they make large, bold additions to any garden. Blooming in late August, these popular shade plants provide color and texture to a landscape. Most commonly, these plants are used in shade gardens as specimen plants. Hosta also look great when mass planted and used as fillers in planting beds and garden borders.
This superb form of the Chinese scrambler, Jasminum officinale, comes from Fromefield Nursery in the UK. Unlike the species that has green leaves, this seedling boasts brilliant gold foliage that holds beautifully even in our hot, humid summers. The stems are home to deliciously fragrant, pure white flowers throughout the summer. As a gesture of forced integration, we encourage Jasminum 'Frojas' to scramble through other colored foliage plants such as purple loropetalum and smoke tree. Each branch of Fiona Sunrise jasmine can reach up to 10' in length when happy or can be kept shorter with a pair of sharp clippers. Lest we forget, tea from this gem is drunk for its aphrodisiac qualities, and who could forget that carrying the flowers attracts money and wealth? Attract a little bit our way, if you please.

Purple and yellow foliage shine in this garden design for sun-loving plants
From Notcutts Nursery in the UK comes a stunning sport of its popular and easy-to-grow Euphorbia 'Charam' (Redwing). The black-purple foliage of Blackbird spurge adorns the compact stems, forming a tight 18" tall x 1' wide evergreen specimen. The deer-resistant foliage is topped, starting in early spring, with large compact heads of bright yellow flowers held just above the foliage by the bright red stems. This is a real WOW plant for a sunny, well-drained spot in the garden! Euphorbia 'Nothowlee' was a 2004 Gold Medal winner at Holland's prestigious Plantarium Expo. We'll also award them the 2004 bad cultivar name award!

The River Banksia is one of the largest growing banksias, reaching 50-60 feet tall with a straight trunk. This one has been limbed up, my hunch is to keep people from sleeping under. One of many beautiful specimens at UCSC arboretum. Leaves are evergreen, alternate, simple, 3-5" long, narrow, leathery, dark green upper and white lower surfaces, margins light serrated. Looks good from underneath. Flowers in the fall, red/orange flowers in 8" long by 3" wide inflorescences with hundreds of individual flowers in pairs. Flowers can also be yellow, UCSC arboretum was selling some last year. Fruits are aggregated into woody clusters looking like a cone. Few flowers actually produce fruit. Those that do are larger and when they open remind one of clams. Love the coloration of the "cone". Remnants of the flowers with no fruit maturing. Bark is interesting, fissured, orangish and gray. Misidentification: Other Banksias I guess. I have seen B. integrifolia around quite a bit, but they have smaller clusters of flowers, and not orange. Location Santa Cruz 1111A River Street (Highway 9)
