For Lesley Blanch, travel writing offered a chance to explore her preconceptions about a place as much as the place itself. Every travel writer is a character in her own narrative, no less a part of the story than the “foreigners” that story depicts. In my own travels, I’ve found that women in countries that discourage […]

Carne expected her to just meekly agree"What about me? Don't I have any say in the matter?" Lesley's eyes flashed indignantly. After all, Came had ignored his wife and child for three years. Why should he be interested in them now?Lesley only knew that if Came gained custody of Jeremy and took him back to Ravensdale, the Radleys would turn the boy against her. She couldn't let that happen. But Came was ruthlessly determined ... and he held all the cards. She had deserted Came, not the other way around. What possible defense did she have against him?
Over the years of conducting workshops, I have discovered that it is not enough to teach my students how to see and paint. My students are drawn to my workshops to discover not only how I paint, but they wish to understand why they are effected by the more expressive aspects of the work I call it “

The Cornell Effect by John C. Cranham, DDS. Cornell Richardson arrived into this world alone and three and a half months premature. Doctors held little hope for his survival but Kim Cranham, an Occupational Therapist saw something special in Cornell. She convinced her husband John that Cornell deserved a home and a chance of happiness. So, on February 2, 1994, and against the doctor's recommendations, they went to the hospital to collect Cornell. They were warned that 50% of babies with Cornell's health conditions and specialised needs usually die at home. The doctors also gave Kim and John the devastating news that Cornell would unlikely talk, walk or show them any kind of love. Follow Cornell's journey over the span of twenty-five years, his struggles, battles, courage and determination to overcome medical barriers that would astound the medical professionals. Cornell's strength of character became a cornerstone for Kim and John who would use their son's unwavering resolve and principles to achieve their own personal goals. This is Cornell Richardson's unforgettable story. The Cornell Effect by John C. Cranham, DDS. This is an emotional rollercoaster of a read. From the outset, John's brutally honest and compelling descriptive narrative draws you into the lives of his family. You truly become emotionally invested in their journey. I found the relationship with his wife so supportive and loving and I feel their mutual respect for each other made their many obstacles far more tolerable to overcome. Cornell was an extraordinary boy, he thrived on challenge and overcoming any hurdle placed in his way. He never showed any bitterness and took responsibility for his physical and mental growth, never believing the world owed him anything. A true inspiration to anyone. I thought the way Kim and John communicated with Cornell was wonderful. I especially loved how they drew a K on his cheek when his sister was born. There were so many heartwarming moments in this book, such as the Ironman competition and on the golf course in Ireland when Cornell decided to have the surgery. I celebrated every one of Cornell's achievements, especially when he passed his driving test. I loved this moving quote from the book too, 'Have faith. Feel blessed. Nurture your gifts and cherish your obstacles.'

Ed Sullivan brought so much talent to America's living rooms over the years. Some of the talent was so young and amazing, like 17-year-old Lesley Gore, who sang on the show in 1963. Dressed in a full-length gown with her hair perfectly done, Lesley sang a medley of her two big hits, 'It's My Party,
