In Algebra 2, I loved teaching about compound interest. I didn’t have to try as hard to keep my student’s interest, because we were talking about money! Here is an example for an interactive notebook page. The foldable is by The Math Nerdette. You can find it for FREE on Teachers pay Teachers. Under the left flap, I wrote what each of the variables represents. Under the right flap, I wrote about the different ways things can be compounded. At the bottom of the foldable, I wrote out an example. Since it is blank, you can choose how easy or hard you want the example to be. You could even change the example based on the level of each class period you have. I also wrote the formula for continuous compounding. I teach this formula at the same time, but I notice that students don’t need as much practice with this one. Then, at the bottom of the page, I glued in a typed out example. This can help save time in class. You can download the file for the example here. I like using a comparison problem for an example, because it gives students practice with both formulas. I like to put a question like this on my test :)

I teach factoring a little bit differently than most people, I think. I only teach one method and it works every time. There's no need for boxes or fancy flow charts to tell students what to do when. You can read my post about How I Teach Factoring. For this unit, my interactive notebook pages are kind of bland. However, they got the job done! First, I taught factoring by grouping. I listed the steps to factor by grouping, then had an example below. Inside the hamburger book, I have lots of examples. Next, I taught factoring trinomials. I had the steps listed and an example below (again). Inside the giant hamburger book there are a bunch of examples. Lastly, I taught all those special factoring patterns...sort of. There really isn't a need for students to know all the factoring patterns, until they notice the pattern for themselves. They can still factor everything (that's required in my Algebra 1 standards) with the splitting the middle method I've taught them. This hamburger book lays it all out for them. Yes, this unit had only three lessons. Our textbook has an entire chapter for this unit! We did a lot of practice, so we spent more than three days working on these skills, but it wasn't necessary to teach a million special cases. I hope this helps you maybe re-think your factoring unit! As a primary teacher, it can be very difficult fitting in grammar instruction into your day. I also have a little secret you might not know about me. I used to loathe teaching grammar. Can any of you relate? It's so difficult to even WANT to teach grammar when we have so many other things we could be doing with our day. Plus, many of us are expected to "spiral" it in with the many other subjects we are expected to teach throughout the day. Although all school districts, programs, and teachers are different, I have found something that students love doing, and that is applying new information into something called an interactive notebook!! And so I created these for grammar...and the students loved them!

My geometry students always seem to fall within two categories: they love triangle congruence (because they think it's easy) or they hate triangle congruence. There seems to be no middle ground. My students that hate triangle congruence seem to have the biggest problem remembering the theorems. The letters of the shortcuts just seem to swim in their heads. So, I created this foldable to help them sort it out. All of the triangle congruence shortcuts are listed, including the "false shortcuts" that students seem to fall for. Inside each of the tabs is an example and the theorem written in words. I always like to include theorems written in words so students can become more comfortable with math language. You can find the foldable here. Every year, my students ALWAYS seem to use SSA as a shortcut. I try to ham it up and make a big deal out of not using it. I say "Ahhh! We don't use bad words in math class - forward or backward!" and "There are no donkeys in here!". I try to go over the top with acting so that my students will remember. I like to show this video to help students visualize why it doesn't work. What is your favorite activity when teaching triangle congruence?
This year, I taught geometric transformations at the end of first semester. It’s a unit that is easy to move around and I needed to fill a weird length of time before final exams. I didn’t go as in-depth this year as I have in the past, but I will have the same students again next year for Algebra 2 and can fill any holes then. First, I started with a page to introduce all of the vocab that goes with the unit. Straightforward, quick, and uninteresting. Next, I taught translations. This lesson always goes pretty quick. It’s nice to start with an easy lesson like this one though, because you can use TONS of vocab and students can get used to hearing it throughout the lesson. This page and the previous page are in my TpT store. Next, I have a practice page for translations. I printed it on legal paper and cut it in half. Have I mentioned my LOVE of legal paper for INBs? Cut in half, it fits perfectly in a notebook and there is overall less wasted space. This page is uninteresting, but worked very well. I had my students complete it with their partners and we regrouped as a class to check it. Reflections, rotations, dilations, and symmetry coming soon!

Genetics is the name, and warm ups, bell ringers and interactive notebook pages is the game. This idea is on fire in my standard biology classes! I admit that my students were dubious (at best) at first, but now all are on board, and I am loving the daily routine. I would call what I am doing a "warm up notebook." The short review that each page provides for my students each day is proving to be invaluable. But there are so many other uses for these activity pages. They make fantastic homework assignments or short daily quizzes. They are perfect for your science interactive notebooks. And my students are starting to realize that their notebook is going to be awesome in December when it is time to study for my semester exam. In earlier blog posts, I wrote about how to set up the notebooks, and pretty much exhausted the topic of the merits of these warm up /bell ringer activities. You can check out the earlier blog posts by clicking these links: Biology Warm Ups and Bell Ringers: Great Classroom Management Tool Biology Interactive Notebooks Ecology Warm Ups and Bell Ringers The latest topic to be added to my bell ringer arsenal is Genetics. Here's a preview of what is included: I have divided the pages into three different categories: There are 34 pages for the student. Each printed page has two identical warm ups. The only thing you have to do is print the pages and cut them in half. Complete answer keys are also included. A couple of examples of student work.... I hope that I have given you some new ideas for your classroom, and I hope you are having a wonderful school year. Here are the links to the warm ups I have posted to date: Introduction to Science Cell Structure, Function and Physiology Ecology Genetics
