There’s one type of home you don’t really expect to find crumbling in an abandoned and decaying state– such as the ones that belonged to heads of state or government, for example. But when a country tears itself to shreds in a civil war, I suppose we can begin to understand how the upkeep of an exiled…
Built in the 1730s and acquired in the mid-19th century by the King-Wilkinson family, whose conservative landownership ensured that Slaidburn retains its uniformly 'unspoilt' appearence, Townhead was last occupied in 1939. The 14-bedroom, Grade II* Listed Georgian mansion was featured in the national press in 2008, as being for sale for the 'bargain' price of £700,000, equivalent to a 2-bed flat in Manchester. The slight hitch was that it is on the 'Buildings At Risk Register' and requires at least £1 million of sympathetic renovation (in addition to £11,080 already spent by English Heritage). The expected value of the result would be £2 million, but though a buyer was found, the Register still reports the condition to be 'poor' and "slowly decaying; solution agreed but not yet implemented". My visits to Bowland are starting to overlap: I followed the the pale farm track and footpath across the bracken-covered lower slope of Dunsop Fell only a fortnight ago, crossing to Whitendale. Similarly, the road in the foreground is The Skaithe, leading towards Bentham over the Cross Of Greet road, another of my regular cycle routes across the Bowland Fells. Better On Black?

361/365 This is the last abandoned house photo I took the other day. Its not the most creative idea, but there were tons of TVs in this house, so I wanted to use them for something! This house was really big, it was three stories tall, but was mostly empty.

the original left wing of the heyduk complex , built for the iba 1987. the right wing is already white (ugly.......) and the balconies will be later light blue. in the past there was a nice green space in the front, at the moment there is a boundary - i do not know why..... (which is also the reason why you can not make better images by this). on the left side is a new building with parking lots, which makes the plot not better. so the whole idea is gone with the wind.

The final cutaway drawing. I leant heavily on my various colour studies of Bayleaf Farmhouse to create this final version, my first cutaway drawing since leaving my ful ltime job. At the heart of the household is the open hall, with a fire on the floor and smole allowed to escape through the roof and open windows. To the left of the hall are the buteery towards to the rear, for storing things in barrels (or butts) and where, in my drawing, butter and other dairy things are made and stored. In the fornt is the pantry for storing other foodstuffs. At the hearth a meal is being prepare while the head of the household and his wife, who ran the house, sit on the most important seat which is built intot he house. At the far end lie a parlour and above that the master bedroom. The room upstairs over the pantry is used for storage and other household people to sleep in, perhaps. The garden is the main source of everyday food while chickens and a privy are shown in the back yard.
At the turn-of-the-century, George C. Boldt, millionaire proprietor of the world famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City, set out to build a full size rhineland castle in Alexandria Bay, on picturesque Heart Island. The grandiose structure was to be a display of his love for his wife, Louise. Beginning in 1900, the Boldt family spent summers in the 1000 Islands at the Boldt Families Wellesley House near Mr. Boldt’s Wellesley Island Farms while 300 workers including stonemasons, carpenters, and artists fashioned the six story, 120 room castle, complete with tunnels, a powerhouse, Italian gardens, a drawbridge, alster tower (children’s playhouse) and a dove cote. Not a single detail or expense was spared. In January 1904, tragedy struck. Boldt telegraphed the island and commanded the workers to immediately “stop all construction.” Louise had died suddenly. A broken hearted Boldt could not imagine his dream castle without his beloved. Boldt never returned to the island, leaving behind the structure as a monument of his love. For 73 years, the castle and various stone structures were left to the mercy of the wind, rain, ice, snow and vandals. When the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property in 1977, it was decided that through the use of all net revenues from the castle operation it would be preserved for the enjoyment of future generations. Since 1977, several million dollars have been applied to rehabilitating, restoring and improving the Heart Island structures.

When I was about 4 you could always find me in the spring with my head into a tulip blossom. I thought it enchanting there were stripes inside and black powdery anthers that you could not see from the outside. One day I came running into the house and told my mother I could see Spring behind the tulips! As I grew older I think I rarely hit such elucidated moments as the ones in childhood!
