St Francis original icon hand-painted in egg tempera on 300gsm acid free smooth (HP) watercolour paper. The halo is gilded with 24 carat gold leaf. The icon has been professionally framed in Ayous bare wood and hand waxed to finish. It measures 44cm wide by 51.5 length and fitted with picture cord ready to hang. This icon of St Francis was part of the body of work for my icon painting diploma, taught by leading Orthodox iconographer Aidan Hart at the Prince's School of Traditional Arts, London. Saint Francis is a well known and much loved saint worldwide. He was a devoted advocate of the poor. Many of the stories that surround his life say that he had a great love for animals and the environment. He was so committed to imitating the life and work of Christ that he is sometimes remembered as 'alter Christus' meaning "another Christ." His feast day is celebrated on 4th October and he is patron of Italy, the environment and animals. The work is obviously a strong memento mori with the aim of instilling in-depth reflections on the transience of human destiny, inviting eschatological thought on the fulfillment of time in future life.

Illustrated in an art style specifically chosen for fifth graders. Each card contains a prayer and brief biography on the back. A resource for any catechetical program. Text on the back of the card: Saint Francis Xavier 1506-1552 Feast Day -- December 3 Saint Francis Xavier's family expected him to become a teacher. Instead, he listened to God's call to become a priest and a missionary. He was one of the first people to follow Saint Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order. Francis served God by preaching the Gospel in India, Indonesia, and Japan. When Francis didn't know the language of the people he was with, he taught by using pictures of Mary and Jesus. Patron of missionaries and foreign missions. Saint Francis Xavier began the first Christian mission in Japan. Eternal God, creator of all things, remember that you alone have created us, whom you have made according to your Image and likeness. (Saint Francis' prayer.)
Less well known than the English Reformation or the French Revolution, it was an equally disastrous time for the Catholic Church.
