Da kronprins Frederik og kronprinsesse Mary i efteråret 2010 flyttede ind i Frederik VIII's Palæ på Amalienborg, var det fjerde gang, at en kommende kong Frederik rykkede ind i dette palæ. »Det har vi set frem til, siden det første stykke tapet blev revet ned. Kronprinsessen og jeg føler os meget privilegerede og taknemmelige over at få lov til at bo her som en ung familie. Nu er det så op til os at fylde rammerne ud – at tilføre palæet nærvær og personlighed. Det glæder vi os meget til,« sagde kronprins Frederik i sin tale, den 20. september 2010, da familien officielt fik "overdraget" nøglerne til deres nye hjem. Kronprinsparrets nye bolig var inden da blevet istandsat for mere end 220 millioner kroner - en proces der gik igang allerede i 2004. Det tager tid at renovere 4500 kvadratmeter fra gulv til loft, især i så gammelt et hus, som Frederik VIII's Palæ er. Mange fine detaljer, blandt andet de smukkeste stuklofter er blevet "gravet frem" og istandsat efter bedste evne, for at fremstå som de oprindeligt gjorde da palæet blev bygget tilbage i 1750. Kronprinsens bedsteforældre, kong Frederik IX og dronning Ingrid flyttede ind i palæet efter deres bryllup i 1934, og dengang blev det hele istandsat efter deres smag, hvilket bl.a. betød at flere af de smukke stuklofter blev skjult bag glatte sænkede lofter. De brede plankegulve blev dækket med parket, og der kom pangfarver i køkkenet; gult, blåt og orange. Sådan som deres smag nu var dengang... Dronning Ingrid blev boende frem til sin død i november 2000. Og med den nye generation på plads i palæet, betyder det at Danmarks næste (igen) tronfølger, prins Christian, kommer til at vokse op i samme palæ som hans farmor, dronning Margrethe. Riddersalen - Her fra balkonen, med udsigt til Rytterstatuen, vil kronprins Frederik og kronprinsesse Mary møde folket på nationale mærkedage, når de engang i fremtiden bliver Danmarks regentpar. Dette foto fra midten af 1950'erne, viser hvordan kong Frederik 9. og dronning Ingrid hver dag samlede deres tre døtre til te i Riddersalen i Frederik VIII's Palæ.Kronprinsessens arbejdsværelseKronprinsens arbejdsværelse - Herfra er der udsigt over slotspladsen. Det er primært de repræsentative dele af palæet, der er udsmykket af forskellige kunstnere. Her er Tal R igang med at udføre sit værk i kronprinsens arbejdsværelse. Spisestuen - udsmykket af Kasper Bonnén. Overalt på slottet er der 6 meter til loftet - og de fleste lofter i palæet et et kunststykke i sig selv. Læse-musik-salonen - som "i gamle dage" fungerede som dronning Ingrids sovegemak, og i endnu-ældre tid, som tronsal. Anretterkøkken - med maleri af Kathrine Ærtebjerg. Endnu et smukt stykke vægkunst - her af Morten Schelde, som har taget udgangspunkt i Galathea 3-ekspeditionen, som kronprins Frederik deltog i. Gobelinsalen - Den ældste udsmykning i Frederik VIII's Palæ er disse 1600-tals gobeliner i havestuen. Det var en gave til Vilhelmine og Frederik 7. som flyttede ind efter deres bryllup i 1828. Den grønne hall/Blomster-Jensens salon. Mødesalen - med et imponerende loftmaleri af Eske Kath. Havesalen Vestibulen - med det mest imponerende kunstværk "Verdensrummet", skabt af kunstneren Jesper Christiansen. Her er mange, mange finurlige - og personlige - detaljer flettet ind, bl.a. et par forsk. pladecovere af nogle af kronprinsparrets yndlings musikere, en pose hundefoder og en stor orange svømmefod, som "tilfældigvis" er placeret over døren ind til kronprinsens arbejdsværelse. Forgemak til Taffelsalen - her har kunstneren John Kørner vægmaleriet "Afghanistan", der forestiller to soldater, der bliver ofre for en eksplosion. Taffelsalen Trappen der forbinder kontorer og private rum. Lamperne her er designet af kunstneren Olafur Eliasson. Hallen - indgang og opgang til palæet. kælderens storkøkken, hvor alle måltider til kronprinsparrets dagligdag bliver fremstillet. ...og ude igen i lidt andre vinkler end dem vi kender fra Slotspladsen.
