peterspencer49 on Flickeflu I have just returned from a trip to Norway, where we saw the Northern lights every night over a week stay. This is an image I made in Sweden in a frozen forest, the coldest conditions we encountered on our trip were here it dropped to - 34.5. We decided to head here as the forecast was for clear skies and snow which had already fallen giving ideal conditions to make some good Aurora images. There was little to no snow in and around Tromso which is a little worrying as you are well in to the Arctic circle.
A strong shadow can add great effect to a photograph. As a compositional element that is used to draw the eye, however, a shadow can be a defining feature of an entire image. We think this collection of images demonstrates how a shadow can be used to great effect in drawing the eye. What do you think? Let us know in the comments! Starbursts, alien landscapes, and magenta bands of light: Take a look at some of the best aurora photos from February and March.

(The photo is from last winter, but since we have snow again it feels less silly to upload now than in the summer.)
Winter is coming! These beautiful pictures of ice-covered lighthouses by U.S.-based photographer Thomas Zakowski might make you feel colder just by looking at them. The lighthouses are so completely frozen over that they look like fantastic icy fairy-tale towers out of “The Chronicles of Narnia. The beautiful icicles are a testament both to nature's creative wonder and its destructive force.
