Teaching your kids all about the Fruit of the Spirit is such a fun lesson with the right tools! We have a ton of Fruit of the Spirit Crafts your kids will love. Join us for a feast of ideas.
Last week I shared that the book The Fruitful Wife (linked to my review) motivated me to share some lessons about the fruit of the Spirit and make a printable. I used this nine lesson study to share with my 4 and 6 year old children. I just chose a few key things from each lesson to teach my own children about the fruit of the Spirit since the lessons are suited for older children. My kids Most kids respond well to object lessons...everyday objects/activities that help us to understand a spiritual lesson, so I sought out a few. Below I have detailed two fruit of the Spirit object lessons and shared a simple (but amazing to the children) snack, as well as links to other fruit of the Spirit object lessons that I may want to revisit in the future. Three Types of Fruit: Introduction to the Fruit of the Spirit Display and discuss the three types of fruit. Fake Fruit- (Initially, I wanted fake fruit that looked real, but decided that shiny, colorful toy fruit was just as ideal.) Though it looks perfect and without blemishes, there is no nourishment or flavor. It's not even edible! This fake fruit reminds us that some people do not allow the Holy Spirit to work within them. Their lives may seem good at quick glance, but really their lives are not productive or good for anything. Being good is not what faith is about! Rotten Fruit- Though this fruit can show in our lives, it is not what anyone prefers to have around them. Rotten fruit can even make a person sick. Anger, selfishness, and jealousy are not from the Holy Spirit. Just as rotten fruit makes you sick, sin makes you spiritually sick and separated from God. Fresh Fruit- The fresh fruit is not only appealing to the eye, but also healthy. It provides nutrients that each person needs. AND it tastes great! It's sweetness is perfect for eating fresh, though it can also be added to pies and breads. It can also be canned or made into jams and jellies. The fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control) are evidence of the Holy Spirit working in our lives. The fruit of the Spirit in our own lives glorifies God and makes others want to be around us. Fruit Salad: Which is a Fruit of the Spirit? Prepare several types of chopped fruits and vegetables (or other food items) in advance and place them in individual containers. (If you do not have nine types of fruit, just spread the various fruit into nine bowls.) I chose to use tin foil for the lids and wrote directly upon it. In advance label each fruit container with a fruit of the spirit. Label the non-fruit items with words such as selfishness, dishonesty, jealousy, or rudeness. (For older children and teens consider using synonyms instead of the actual word listed in the verse.) It worked well for us to have three bowls of non-fruit. Explain to the children that today you need to make a delicious fruit salad. Ask what would NOT be in a fruit salad. Ask what behaviors and attitudes are sins in our lives. Remind them (or ask) that these do not come from the Holy Spirit. Ask what is in a fruit salad. Ask what the fruit of the Spirit is. Remind them that our lives can sometimes get mixed up, with the evidence of our heart shown as the fruit of our lives. Using the bowls, have children choose and pour fruit items into a larger bowl. Then stir and serve the fruit salad to the children! My son asked multiple times (the same day even) for another fruit of the Spirit salad! These fruit of the Spirit object lessons were with the original lessons, though I explained them in more detail here. Fruit of the Spirit Snack And a fruit of the Spirit snack when introducing LOVE! Carve a heart-shaped apple! There are more great resources out there, too! Tree object lesson. It likens a Christian to a tree. We need certain things to grow. I really like this one for a fruit of the Spirit activity! Balloon object lesson. Great for a wrap up fruit of the Spirit activity to help focus on which fruit God is working on in our lives. Seed object lesson. Consider the potential of seeds and the fruit of the Spirit. Get your fruit of Spirit/Galations 5:22-23 printable. It's free! And if you are a wife or know a wife, I HIGHLY recommend The Fruitful Wife! ~ Annette {This Simple Mom}

Fun new Fruit of the Spirit Game, worksheets and File Folder Game! Sort the Good and Bad apples Game by Jeanne Dickson. Thanks so much to Jeanne Dickson for permission to share this game idea and pictures! There is so much hands-on learning fun for the Fruit of the Spirit! There are 9 Fruit of the Spirit good apples and 9 Works of the flesh bad apples and a page of blank mixed apples. These will work best if printed on cardstock. Cut them out and shuffle them. Draw a tree using the template expanded onto poster board, tri-fold science board or a white board or chalkboard. How Jeanne used the cards for the game: Pick a card from the pile and say the word on the apple. Do not let the kids see the apple until they say if it is good or bad. If it is a good apple, they can attach it to the tree. Depending on how you design your tree, tape, magnets or Velcro can be used. For the bad apples: Students can wad up the bad apples and throw them into the trash (Jeanne’s was made from a square tissue box). This frequently took several attempts before they managed to get it into the trash can. I love this part: Sort of like we have trouble letting go of our "bad habits" and throwing them away for good. These worksheets are included. The first worksheet is designed for the student to draw a line from the word to the correct tree label. The second is basically the same concept, but students can cut and glue the words to the correct column. Note: The file folder game uses the same apples designed for the game to lay on the correct tree. This can be made into a file folder game or glue the cover to a large envelope and put the 'game boards' and apples inside to store. These are great for early arrivers or review! Jesus used many science object lessons when he taught. So did Paul. You can as well! Use this fun fruit of the spirit lesson to teach eternal truth with science facts!
Here is another great song by Jeanne Dickson! Thanks to Jeanne for letting me use these songs to create flipcharts to share! This has the standard one-page black & white song and the color flipchart. The difference for this flipchart is that I used a variety of photos of children showing love and goodness. Click here to download. I found these wood sets at Target in the Dollar Spot. I saw the fruit and immediately thought of Fruit of the Spirit. It's a nice set because of the price, they are wood and will hold to kids playing and they stack up on each other. You could write the Fruits of the Spirit on each piece, and let each student pick one to talk about. They can discuss what each word means and represents. And/or talk about a situation for each word and the good and bad way to handle each instance. Have another set to leave blank and let the students take turns listing them. Or, pick one to discuss. Click here for a visual of one Fruit and more. Click here to see the lesson and more. Click here to see the original lesson, ideas and more.
Fruit of the Spirit with visuals and printables. T teach this lesson, I have a basket, and add the visuals as we discuss each fruit quality. And please note, this lesson needs to be a discussion type lesson. I do not have all the things we talk about listed here, just enough to give you the start. You know what your students' needs are. If I offered you this piece of fruit (holding up a rotten banana), would you like to eat it? Let the children answer. Of course, you wouldn't. This banana is yucky and rotten. We want to throw that banana away. (This is another idea I have used for years and do not remember where I found it.) What if I offered you this banana (holding up the ripe banana)? Would you like to eat this one? Let the children answer. I bet you would like to eat this banana. It is yellow and ripe, and probably tastes really yummy. Our life is like these two fruits. Today's scripture is Galatians 5:19-26. On one hand, we have people who do bad things and make us feel sad. While on the other hand, we have people who like to do good things, like help others and be nice to others. Which fruit do you think God wants us to be, the rotten banana or the ripe banana? Let the children answer. God wants us to be good fruit. Paul writes to us in the Bible about the Fruit of the Spirit. He talks about the way Christians should treat others and how we should do things that make God happy with us! Paul tells us the good Christian qualities God expects us to be. This is what our Bible lesson is about today. Here are the good qualities that God wants us to have: 1. Love is unselfish and loyal. Christians show love by doing things for others and being nice to family, friends and pets. Remember, God says to love your enemies. That’s hard to do sometimes, but it’s what God expects! 2. Joy means being happy and not grouchy. It means don’t be grouchy when your parents tell you to something you don’t like to do. The Bible says to obey your parents! 3. Peace is being content with what God has given us. Be happy with what you have. 4. Longsuffering is patient, not whining or complaining. Remember, patience with your brothers or sisters, no matter how hard that is. 5. Kindness is giving and helpful. How about saying something nice to someone that you see is feeling down? 6. Goodness means caring and understanding. Do a little something extra to help out at home. 7. Faithfulness means to be true to God. You all know right from wrong. You all know what God expects. You all know what He says not to do. So, try real hard not to! 8. Gentleness is being tender and calm. Again, being kind to your family, friends and your pets. 9. Self-control is managing your wants and emotions. Oh, this is a hard one! Don’t do things that you know you shouldn’t be doing. If you have to hide it or lie about it, don’t do it. Be careful how you act. Be careful what you say. Be careful of the friends you pick. I finished the lesson with these thoughts. I passed around the above basket with the packages of fruit snacks. I said that we have talked about fruit and how God wants us to be as Christians. Here is a package of fruit snacks. It says fruit on the package. Does God want us to be fake, like this is? And, just because it looks like fruit on the outside, does that mean it is good fruit on the inside? Does He want us to worship on Sunday morning, then leave the building and then do whatever we want and not what He wants? Then, kids being kids, one said... Well, it says made from real fruit... I replied that it is made by a little bit of real fruit, that is not all fruit. Does God want us to be a little bit Christian, or partially a Christian? Or, does He want us to be 100% pure as a Christian? They all knew that answer! And, as was mentioned by Renee Hunter, fake fruit does not reproduce! If you think about fruit: It’s good for you, it keeps you healthy, and it reproduces more fruit. If you do things that are good for you, do things to be healthy and bring people to Bible study with you, then you are being what God expects. To set up my room for this lesson, I put away the tables and chairs, put down a blanket and we had a 'picnic' on the floor. I put the basket of real fruit in the center so everyone could snack while we talked and have bottled water for them to drink. These are the teacher's visuals for this lesson. I cut the fruit out, attached each part of the lesson on the back of each piece, and laminated them. I will have a basket and add the visuals as we discuss each fruit quality. Click here to print the above visuals. This is the students basket and fruit. The kids cut out the fruit and added it as we discussed the different fruits. You can print it here. I added an updated version of the above. The basket is the same, but the fruit is smaller and on one page only, instead of 3! Click here to download the new version. The above download has a basket for you to print and put together. I have baskets that I use, so I will not need to print them. Also, you can use a paper/plastic bowl if you would rather save the time and printing. If I were using it for one or two students, then I would print it (it's really cute), but for a class, I would rather purchase the baskets, since I can get them at a very good price. For directions on putting the basket together, please look here. Bible Verse: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness. Galatians 5:22 (NKJV) Here is a worksheet if you would like to purchase the Fruit of the Spirit stickers. They can usually be found at your local Bible book stores and teacher stores, or you can purchase them here. I usually have the kids write in the words to help with memory, but a lot of first graders have a hard time with the bigger words, so you can print the sticker worksheet with the words already there, or with a blank line for them to write it in. You can print them here: With words Without Words (See matching visuals below) And there is also a picture to color, and you can print it here. I have used these in the past and they coordinate with the stickers & sticker sheet above: Carson-Dellosa Fruit of the Spirit (CD-3291) set for my visual aid. They are bigger and colorful. I print my lesson and attach to the back of each picture. Click here to download. This is the bulletin board I use with this Bible lesson. Scripture taken from the New King James Version®. Vacation Bible School Fruit of the Spirit This year we did a Fruit of the Spirit theme for Vacation Bible School. I had the task of coming up with three crafts for our three-night event. I'm going to show you the crafts we did and tell you how you can do them better. First night, we did a Fruit of the Spirit Crown: This was a big hit! I printed off the fruit on card stock and while watching TV at night, I'd cut out all those fruit. Also, cut green paper so that it looked like grass and made the banner. Here's the fruit. You'll need one card stock print for each child. I always try to print off extra in case more kids show up than I expected. I still haven't figured out how to embed a pdf file into my blog. Sorry. But hopefully you can drag this to your desktop and put it in your photo album to print. Like I said, I sat night after night cutting out fruit for this project. It's time-intensive, but a great craft! The headband for the crown. I also cut out plain pieces of card stock to hot glue to these headbands to customize to each child's head. Sweet Kadie shows her masterpiece! Way to go, Hannah! What a beautiful crown. One thing I realized from doing this craft is that you need to have all the components hot-glued onto the headband before the kids start coloring them. We had only 20 minutes for crafts and it took all three nights to finish up this craft. You don't have to have the fruit in exactly the same position. It makes each one individual for there to be some differences. So, cut out the pieces and hot glue them together. Then the kids can come in and just color and have the crown customized to their heads. That way, they'll be able to take their crafts home that night. Reese coloring her Fruit of the Spirit craft. My littlest crafter for the week, Eliza. Great coloring, Eliza! So, if I had it to do over again, I'd go ahead and hot glue the fruit onto the headband, so that the kids could just come in and color the pieces. Then, the craft would have been completed the first night. More time-intensive prior to VBS, but much less stressful the night of. I just cut out different lengths of card stock to attach the fruit to the headband. https://gainesvilletheologyontap.wordpress.com/2010/08/20/fall-2010-series/ The second night we did this very easy craft. The kids were able to complete it that night. I found this wonderful print at the url address printed in the caption above. I printed them off on card stock and then found some glow-in-the-dark paint. I painted each dove with the glow-in-the-dark paint and let them dry prior to VBS. I took a small hole punch and strung fishing wire at the top for a hanger. One thing nice about this craft is that it gave the kids a chance to show their own individuality. The third night we made Fruit of the Spirit charm bracelets. The kids LOVED them! Still yet another time-intensive craft prior to VBS, but so well worth the time and effort. https://www.etsy.com/listing/44892492/100pcs-tiny-fruit-salad-charms-wee?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=plastic%20fruit%20charms&ref=sr_gallery_9 I found these wonderful inexpensive plastic charms from Etsy. I got two packages. There are about 100 charms in a bag for about $7. I divided them up into the individual packs for each child, including a piece of small gauge wire that would fit through the holes. These look big in this picture, but they're really small. Also, I included little 4mm silver balls as spacers and toggle clasps to attach the bracelet to the child's wrist. I took paper plates and attached folded over painter's tape, then placed the spacers and fruit charms on them to make it easy for the children to pick up the items without everything rolling all over the floor. And, PRAISE GOD!, it worked. I was really impressed at how well the children were able to string these little silver balls and charms onto the small gauge wire. Only the smallest of children needed help. And, at the end I twisted the wires around the toggles to hold in place. Be sure to attach one toggle to one of the wire prior to the kids stringing the beads. Before they begin stringing their beads, place the wire around their wrists and allow just enough at the end to make the bracelet easy to move around the wrist and enough wire to tie off the other toggle. Mason loved his Fruit of the Spirit bracelet. Fruit of the Spirit POWER! Everyone LOVED this craft. And, it really did come out pretty. Well worth the time and effort doing it. I love seeing these smiling faces! Add caption Enjoy! I hope I have helped someone else prepare for a Fruit of the Spirit Craft time at Sunday School or Vacation Bible School
