This student chose to do a self portrait. It's no secret to my students that I love weaving projects. There's something about the methodical over-and-under process that I find so relaxing and satisfying. Here's a paper weaving project I did with a Grade 10/11 class. I've also done it with Grades 7 and 8. They essentially did a drawing of the same image twice (they traced the first image onto the same sized paper) and then painted them slightly different colours. They could either go for opposite colours to create a high contrast checkerboard effect, or go for similar colours to create a more subtle effect. So here's a drawing of a falling over champagne glass- drawn exactly the same twice. We used a tracing table- a window would work as well. Then paint them both- we used acrylics and/or watercolours. This student below chose a subtle colour change for her Egyptian piece. Once both paintings are dry, you need to fold one in half and draw a line about one inch from the open end of the folded paper. This is the limit of cutting. Students could measure their cutting lines with a ruler or free hand cut them. Most chose to measure. The thinner the strips, the longer the weaving will take to finish. These strips are known as the 'warp'strips. The strips don't need to be straight but all my students made theirs straight. For the second sheet of paper, cut the strips all the way through. I suggest to students to measure and draw all the lines out first on the back, with a ruler, then number them, in case they fall down, or get mixed up. You won't use the first couple of strips on both the top and bottom. So here's the weaving at the beginning stages. The blue painting below has been folded vertically and cut into the 'warp' strips. Then the pink/purple painting is being cut across- the 'weft' strips (1 cm) and those strips are being woven into the blue painting. So here's the back of the painting that's going to be cut into the 'weft' strips. Number them on the back just in case. You need to weave them in order so that the painted image lines up more or less. It won't be perfectly the same and that's ok. Students stress over this part and try to get it all perfectly lined up and it just doesn't work. That's not the point of this project. So I found I had to continually emphasize that the drawings do not have to line up perfectly!!! You can number the strips on the back to keep them in order. Especially useful if a gust of wind enters the classroom and blows the strips onto the floor... yes, it's happened. Over, under, over, under and so on. Then start weaving- over, under, over, under- this takes time and patience. When you have a few strips in and it looks good, glue down the edges with dots of white glue to keep it all secure. Students will find they don't need to use all the strips- the may take out some half-way through that don't line up and that's fine. Here's a link to a very basic paper weaving lesson that may make more sense than mine did ;) Here are some of the early finishers: Ta da! this student left a large, wide border which I quite like. this student was going for a brocade look.

If you're on Pinterest, chances are good you've seen this activity. But for the few who haven't, get ready for some seriously cheap science fun. We made a hovercraft! Supplies An old CD that you no longer need Glue gun and glue sticks thumbtack soda bottle screw top (you want one that's fairly deep) latex party balloon Assembly Poke several holes in the plastic bottle top with the thumbtack. Use a hot glue gun (Adults, please. No children. Those things are H-O-T) to apply a bead of glue to the edge of the bottle top and glue it to the center of the CD, over the hole. If necessary, apply a bead of glue around the cap to make sure it's totally secure. You're almost done. Now blow up the balloon. Twist the neck of the balloon to keep it inflated and pull the lip of the balloon over the edges of the bottle cap. Ask your child to make predictions. Before we released the hovercraft, my son thought it would glide through the air more like a hot air balloon. Let it Go Set on a flat surface like a countertop or wood floor. Release the balloon and watch it glide along without any effort just over the surface. Invite the child to form a hypothesis about why and how this works. How it WorksThe force of the air that exits the balloon as it deflates goes through the holes in the bottle cap, pushes against the surface (floor or counter), and creates a cushion of air over which the CD glides freely.
These pipe cleaner finger puppets are super easy to put together. In less than 10 minutes you can make one little puppet for each little finger. I love buying craft supplies from the dollar store, but I'm usually stumped on what to do with pipe cleaners. But these puppets are a great use of dollar store materials! I got the idea from Chirp Magazine for Kids by Owl. My in laws bought a subscription for our girls and Leah is just getting to the age where she loves flipping through the pages to see what's inside (she just turned 4).

Our continuing Exploration through the Life of Jesus Has brought us to the time when Jesus performs another miracle. This time Jesus heals Jarius' Daughter. We added NEW CARDS to our DO You Know? Wall. My Expectation is for the KIDDOS to be able to answer each of these by the end of the lesson. We had three new words to add to our WORD WALL. I chose TALITHA CUMI, MOURNER and SYNAGOGUE. Those are important words for the KIDDOS to understand for this lesson to make more sense to them. We Added a NEW Card to our GOD'S AWESOME PLAN FOR MAN Timeline!! Our MEMORY VERSE was Mark 5:26! To hear the MEMORY VERSE song click on this link. Memory Verse Song Mark 5:26 This is the SONG we learned with this lesson. It is a short and simple song to learn. The song can be heard by clicking the following link. Jarius' Daughter....Song By Ronda Duvall Our VISUAL Aid for this lesson was a picture for a set of visual aid cards I purchased several years ago. I really like this picture...It had all the people that were in the house with Jesus represented and if you look through the window you will see the mourners outside! The Kiddo's TAKE-HOME project was a 3D bed with a little girl on it that they were able to make "RISE" when we practiced saying, "TALITHA CUMI." I designed the bed on my computer. Then, using various clip art I have access to I gave it a WOOD look and a quilted top. I drew the little girl a LOOOOOONG time ago...my wonderful husband scanned several of my drawings into the computer. This allows me to manipulate them for size, color, etc. If you would like to see how this TAKE HOME "works" please click on the following link. Clicking on the picture will NOT open the video. Jesus Says, "Talitha Cumi"..."Little Girl Arise." This weeks REVIEW Game was a fun BOARD GAME. We all worked together to get JESUS from the Sea of Galilee to Jarius' house. The KIDDOS answer a question from the lesson, roll a die and then move "Jesus" the number of spaces the die tells them. There are a few "bumps" in the way as Jesus makes His way to Jarius' house. As you know, the second week of the LESSON is when we REVIEW. It gives me opportunity to correct any misunderstandings. It also, gives opportunities for the KIDDOS who missed class the first week to "CATCH UP." This is the Week we SAY our MEMORY VERSE from MEMORY and We do an ACTIVITY we add to our EXPLORER JOURNAL. This LESSON'S EXPLORER JOURNAL ACTIVITY was a POCKET "BED" and a two LITTLE GIRL...The KIDDOS colored the area around the pillow and both the front and back of the little girl. They love making her get out of bed, flip around so she is smiling and then say, "give her something to eat." I am loving teaching the LESSONS on the LIFE OF JESUS. I feel like I am learning more and more!! I enjoy writing, coming up with the crafts, activities, games, etc. It can be challenging at times....but, it is always worth it when I see the KIDDOS enjoying learning events from the LIFE of JESUS!! Blessings, Ronda
