detail of gilt and painted ornament on a harpsichord, by Alison Woolley My good friend and collaborator Alison Woolley has a lovely studio here in Florence, and my first order of business after settling in to our apartment was to visit FlorenceArt.net Studio d’Arte and get a look at the harpsichord she just finished ornamenting, a prestigious commission for the L'Opéra Royal de Versailles. Harpsichord built by Atelier Marc Ducornet and painted by Alison Woolley The "Ruckers Taskin" style harpsichord was built by Atelier Marc Ducornet in Paris, and shipped to Florence for Alison to decorate. The design of the piece was inspired by the architecture and ornament in the Château de Versailles. detail of interior of harpsichord lid, gilt and painted by Alison Woolley Yesterday Erling and I went to the studio to help pack the finished harpsichord and then the shipper came and took it away to Paris and we all felt a bit sad to see it go, particularly Alison who had been working on this for months. I know I feel a bit blue when I send off a mural from my studio and all of a sudden it seems terribly blank and quiet. Fortunately another harpsichord will be arriving in Alison's studio soon. samples of work at FlorenceArt.net Elsewhere in the studio are examples of designs, class projects, experiments, Florentine style painted furniture, and a beautiful (top secret) design for a scarf for Salvatore Ferragamo. gilding tools at FlorenceArt.net Alison regularly teaches classes in the tradtional Florentine techniques of gilding and painting furniture and other fine surfaces at the FlorenceArt.net studio as well as through special retreats in Italy and intensive workshops. The studio accepts commissions year-round for furniture, instruments, murals, and seriously beautiful things. Watch this video of another recent project by Alison Woolley: painting a Claviorganum. About A pair of Spanish Art Nouveau armchairs with giltwood frames by Joan Busquets. Made for Antonio Gaudi's Palacio Güell, Barcelona, Joan Busquets crafted much of Gaudi's furniture. Circa 1903. A member of a family that was long involved in the design and manufacture of furniture in Spain, Joan Busquests was a proponent of Art Nouveau and modernism at the turn of the 20th century Spain. Most often associated with the architect and designer Antonio Gaudi and the movement specific to the Catalan region of Barcelona, Busquets's designs encompass a broader range of European Art Nouveau, particularly those of France and Belgium. His furniture is often reduced in scale, embodies the rococo in an inventive way and uses gilding to enhance and lighten design, as well as to serve as a reflective element. This chair model looks identical to a suite of furniture designed in collaboration with Antonio Gaudi for the Güell Palace, Barcelona that is pictured in situ in a photograph from the palace. These chairs appear to be identical to those pictured. Circa 1903. From 1840 on, Joan Busquets produced furniture for numerous distinguished clients in Barcelona, and also supplied the aristocracy in Madrid, Cuba, Puerto Rico and the republics of Central and South America. The leitmotiv of Busquets's firm was the golden sunflower with sinuous stem (to which must be added other motifs based on flora and fauna, such as lilies, orchids and snails), evident in his furniture designs. Golden Sponge Chair by Peter Traag Actually I was looking for a golden egg chair to share with you for Easter when I found Dutch designer Peter Traag’s Golden Sponge Armchair. I’ll share this one first and rest assured I also found a Golden Egg Chair;-)
I’ve been teasing you with this desk for ages, especially if you’re a Twice Lovely Facebook Fan. (And if you’re not, why the heck not?!?! You too can be privy to all the juicy, pre-blog sneak peeks.) Like many other pieces in my workshop, I picked it up right before the Christmas holidays came and struck me down for the count with morning all-day sickness. It might hurt some of you if I said how much I got it for, so we’ll just say “not enough.” ;) Check out this loveliness: I’ve never seen anything like it in all my days! It’s so incredibly unique that I’ve been completely paralyzed when it came to redoing it. I’ve had no fewer than 10 different plans of attack. First I thought white, but white is so plain. This little lady needed something special! Then I thought maybe a glazed metallic, but with all that fanciness, we don’t want to be too “Liberace” with the thing. I had some great suggestions on the FB fan page. Gray was certainly a contender, as was a pale turquoise. But in the end, I kept coming back to the idea of a pale, seaglass green, distressed and glazed to bring out all the fantastic carving. Just to show you all what a difference some distressing and glazing does for a piece, here is the desk after I had it painted in the seaglass green: The desk is certainly pretty, the color’s pretty, BUT add some distressing and glazing and it becomes something AMAZING!! I kept all the original hardware, just gave it a good scrubbing in my ol’ favorite mixture of salt and white vinegar. Even the back is super sexy! I think this is my favorite piece I’ve ever gotten to work on. It really is a one-of-a-kind gem. It looks even better in person! I leave the day after tomorrow for a 6-day childless getaway with my love in the fantastic Monterey, CA. We had our honeymoon there almost 11 years ago and I’m so excited to go back! Then when we get back, I have a week and a half to crank through several more projects before the Junkrestore Vintage Market in Scottsdale March 31, April1st and April 2nd. Are you coming? It’s going to be a blast!! ‘Till then, Linking to: Type A, Somewhat Simple, Elements Interiors, Miss Mustard Seed, Finding Fabulous

Prompted by my therapist, I'm attempting to take up meditation. I've cleared a spot in the second bedroom in which to get my 'tation on, but I'm both finding it difficult because I have back problems and the floor is so uncomfortable. So I'm on the lookout for some good meditation chairs. Any of you have experience shopping for the right mediation-encouraging chair?
