Just as there are numerous terms for the humble garbage can in English including trash can, rubbish bin, wastepaper basket and dustbin, so too are there many in Italian! One of the most diffused terms is bidone (masculine, plural: bidoni). It can be used on its own or followed by della spazzatura / dei rifiuti ... Read more

If your students are any thing like mine, they struggle with making inferences. It is a tricky skill! ...and it takes a lot of practice. I made something super fun for my second graders, and they didn't even realize how hard they were working on making inferences. In summary, students use the items in the garbage cans to infer who the garbage can belonged to. My teammates and I (6 of us) each filled a little Dollar Tree garbage can with trash that would represent us. We chose items that students would recognize as ours- food and drink wrappers/containers, ticket stubs, receipts, items from our purse, classroom supplies that we love, etc. We intentionally chose items that would help the students infer. I started my lesson by showing the Brain Pop Jr. video titled, "Make Inferences". (Brain Pop is a paid subscription that I am lucky to have in my District. If you don't subscribe, it is definitely worth the money. I use it so often!) I referred to my Inferring anchor charts (shown above). I love having premade anchor charts to refer to when creating the anchor chart is not the focus of my lesson. (This set is can be found here.) I always teach inferences as filling in the blanks. The author wants the reader to think about the text and to draw his or her own conclusions. Then, to help students get the idea of using object clues to make inferences, we did a premade practice worksheet starring some famous characters. You can grab this worksheet for free here or by clicking on the photo above. I put a garbage can on each of my student tables. After explaining the activity to the students, they went from table to table to inspect the contents of the garbage can. They recorded a list of the contents on the graphic organizer that I provided for them. This was considered the evidence or text clues. Then, students wrote down some of the background knowledge they had about their teachers. Some chose to fill out the entire thing while at the table, and some chose to observe first and infer later. This took about 15 minutes. The activity followed the same procedure that we used when we were learning to make inferences in a text: read, think about what you already know/schema, and then infer. Finally, we came together and created a whole-group anchor chart using the information that students had recorded. We recorded the evidence. They gave me their inference, and then they explained why they chose that particular teacher. It was so fun to hear their rationalization about why a certain can had to belong to a certain teacher. So cute and funny! I also revealed the owners of the garbage cans, and they had gotten them all correct! They definitely know their 2nd grade teachers pretty well. It was so much fun! If you need help or suggestions, there is a list of ideas included in my resource. I rewarded the students for their hard work with some cute brag tags and completion certificates, which of course they loved. They are crazy for brag tags! I put this activity together in one resource for you, if you're interested in trying in your own classroom. It includes everything that you need, minus the items for the trashcans. The recording sheets are editable so you can customize it for yourself and your classroom. You can grab it here or click on the picture below. You don't need the resource to do the activity, though! You could do it really simply without the extras. Have fun with this activity! It's a really great way to hook your little readers!

Focus on the most important and most often overlooked factor in a successful Tableau project--data. Without a reliable data source, you will not achieve the results you hope for in Tableau. This book does more than teach the mechanics of data preparation. It teaches you: how to look at data in a new way, to recognize the most common issues that hinder analytics, and how to mitigate those factors one by one. Tableau can change the course of business, but the old adage of \"garbage in, garbage out\" is the hard truth that hides behind every Tableau sales pitch. That amazing sales demo does not work as well with bad data. The unfortunate reality is that almost all data starts out in a less-than-perfect state. Data prep is hard. Traditionally, we were forced into the world of the database where complex ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) operations created by the data team did all the heavy lifting for us. Fortunately, we have moved past those days. With the introduction of the Tableau Data Prep tool you can now handle most of the common Data Prep and cleanup tasks on your own, at your desk, and without the help of the data team. This essential book will guide you through: The layout and important parts of the Tableau Data Prep tool Connecting to data Data quality and consistency The shape of the data. Is the data oriented in columns or rows? How to decide? Why does it matter? What is the level of detail in the source data? Why is that important? Combining source data to bring in more fields and rows Saving the data flow and the results of our data prep work Common cleanup and setup tasks in Tableau Desktop What You Will Learn Recognize data sources that are good candidates for analytics in Tableau Connect to local, server, and cloud-based data sources Profile data to better understand its content and structure Rename fields, adjust data types, group data points, and aggregate numeric data Pivot data Join data from local, server, and cloud-based sources for unified analytics Review the steps and results of each phase of the Data Prep process Output new data sources that can be reviewed in Tableau or any other analytics tool Who This Book Is For Tableau Desktop users who want to: connect to data, profile the data to identify common issues, clean up those issues, join to additional data sources, and save the newly cleaned, joined data so that it can be used more effectively in Tableau
