It's often interesting what can inspire us.... is it an image on Pinterest? a fabulous evening silhouette and big green lawn a simple humble work table beautiful natural elements clean and modern spaces with interesting antiques whimsy and white a place to have tea a chic and warm restaurant a simple morning in the garden filled with sunshine It's probably all of those things or a patchwork of a bit of each My inspiration usually comes from the colors and textures of things that I enjoy looking at and most often a house and it's architecture will tell you what needs to be placed inside But since I'm not sure where or what style exactly our next house will be I have chosen this little Plein Air Painting as my inspiration for a few new furnishings It has wonderful coral and turquoise hues as well as yellow, rich greens, terra-cotta and salmon The colors of this old Roseville Wisteria vase are similar And something about the terra cotta, greens and blues in this glaze are so beautiful together I think this vase dates from 1920-1940 so those may have been the colors that people really liked during California's golden era This old basket has wonderful old paint in oyster white with just the right amount of wood peeking through.... beautiful simple color Old storage firkins are a beautiful example of how color can become more rich and interesting with time So I purchased a few things to get me started....keeping in mind the colors of the little painting first up a clean and calm Ushak rug Millie...of course is quite pleased with this purchase I found a few old indigo batik pillows with blue-green and cream For some of the larger pieces I like the neutral texture of linen in stripes and solids and maybe some ticking thrown in These are a fun colors to use as large pillows.... I really like the bright melon and turquoise velvet colors found again the the painting And a really unique fabric I purchased is this Antique Japanese Boro panel Japanese boro's are folk textiles, pieced together as the fabric became worn because cotton was highly prized for it's warmth The fabrics are all hand loomed, died with indigo and stitched together by hand randomly... but with great care this beautiful boro dates to 1800-1850 the color and texture is really quite amazing and I have never used anything like this before I love the fact that all of the patches are sewn by hand and the textures are both rough and soft So I need to get started right away to furnish a new living room and I will be using my patchwork of inspiration see you soon

Fellow bloggers have inspired my tea this week. I saw a few outdoor teas that were so beautiful I just had to take tea outside this weekend. The garden is always at it's peak at this time of year. The strawberries have just started turning ripe in the garden, so there is no better cake to serve than strawberry shortcake. I'll share how easy this shortcake is tomorrow. The tea cup and mug are by Roy Kirkham the pattern is Alpine Strawberry. The roses are just putting on a show. They are gorgeous. Lace table topper in the Floret pattern provided by Heritage Lace. Hello everyone, It is a beautiful day here with a definite touch of fall in the air. I have lots of photos to share with you but I got a new computer and my photos have not been transferred yet so I hope you will enjoy another cup of tea with me with some of our garden roses. I love this teacup from Winners-it seems to speak of autumn to me.It is a Rose Cameo Peach by Royal Albert. The roses are a David Austen English rose - Golden Celebration. Have an oatmeal scone with some of my peach preserves. This is one of my favorite things-as good as a dessert and healthier. The tea set is Wild Rose by Skye Mc Ghie Hopefully, I get my computer all up and running soon and can share more with you soon. In the meantime I am looking forward to our annual 70 mile yard sale this Saturday - hoping for a nice day and some pretty treasures to take home. Thank you for your visit and welcome to my new followers. Carolyn

Welcome to a beautiful morning and time for Tea In The Garden! Please pour yourself a cup of tea and linger. This week our temperatures have gone back to the 80's and are wonderful - this is Colorado as it should be. Recently I happened upon one of those 1950's vintage rose tablecloths - similar to one I found a while back but lighter in color! Today is my 34th Tea In The Garden. I am very fond of Foxgloves - I am sure because of Tasha Tudor - of course mine are very short because I failed to water them with her "goat manure tea" as she called it! Thanks to the many who asked about my smashed toes - I noticed yesterday that I was no longer limping so I am definitely on the mend. I have really enjoyed my small flower garden this summer. I will be taking this bouquet to the lady behind the greenbelt behind our house. She is being cared for now by her daughter and I hope these will bring her some cheer! I want to especially thank you all for participating..... I know it is work to set up Tea In Your Garden.... I thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Welcome to our Downton Abbey Garden Tea! On a beautiful sunny summer day we hosted a Downton Abbey Garden Tea and I thought you might want to come along too. So grab a cup of tea and maybe a pretty hat and join us. First a little look at some back scenes preparations.I picked flowers from the garden and made lots of bouquets.I thought a mainly white theme would be elegant for a Downton Abbey Tea.We have lots of hydrangeas of different varieties in the garden.Sorry,I forgot to take a pic of all the white vases and bouquets sitting on the cupboard. Silver was polished and linens ironed-so thankful for good friends and family who pitched in and helped out with food prep, garden chores, grasscutting, setting up tables, serving, dishwashing, cleanup and getting the food all on the plates. There was lots of baking to do and my daughter Jennifer and friend Janice were both a big help with that while other good friends made sandwiches etc. My rather large collection of pretty plates and teacups etc. came in handy but one of my daughter's who spend the afternoon washing them all thought "paper was the new china"! My friend Snow spent a few days helping me with setting up tables and all the other little details that had to be done beforehand.Even my sister visiting from Vancouver for that week got roped into helping. We are almost ready! Phew, things did get a little panicky for awhile. This lovely group of quilters were among the first to arrive. I love that so many got into the spirit of the day and dressed up for it! I love that parasol hat etc.,Penelope!!! Our guests could tour the gardens and the new boathouse below.Someone asked how it was advertised and it was just through my blog and word of mouth. The tickets sold out quickly and our limit this year was 45. Just a little peek at the inside of the boathouse but more coming soon-I promise. The Gardener's Cottage was also on the tour and this charming little girl was a very enthusiastic visitor! My friend Janice and I. Let the party begin! Two delightful visitors are ready for tea. My sister on the right and her friend Sharon enjoyed a lovely visit in the shade of the willow tree and the sound of the brook behind them. More charming friends having some tea. We were blessed with a lovely sunny day until the last of the guests were leaving when a thunder shower rolled in.Phew! that was close!!! My friend Jean and her husband enjoyed a shady spot under the vine covered pergola. Just a small sample of some of the food for our high tea. We served Lady Baker's Tea that was generously donated to us and it was delicious served hot and also as an iced tea. Thank you so much! The tea is available at our local Farmer's Market or visit her here online . I made sour cream raspberry coffeecake and sticky date pudding with toffee sauce for dessert. I love how everyone lingered and enjoyed visiting in the garden. My friend Heather on the right and 3 generations on the left-sweet! My friends Heather M and Janice. Janice on the left said she had a little taste of the 'downstairs' at Downton Abbey but also the 'upstairs' as she responded nicely to a panicky call a couple of hours beforehand to help in the kitchen before having her tea. Friends enjoying a chat. Margaret and Barbara enjoying a peek though my book - Aiken House & Gardens.I hope your daughter enjoys it, Margaret! Now, I would love to enjoy a cup of tea with a couple of friends, Linda and Sarah who live too far away to attend but generously sent along a donation for sweet Lucas anyway-thank you so much! Maybe, someday soon we can actually have a real visit over a cup of tea!!! Thank you so much to all who attended our Downton Abbey Tea and to all who worked so hard behind the scenes. A special thank you to my friend Snow who contributed an unbelievable amount of hours so cheerfully-we couldn't have done it without you all! We had several requests to make it an annual event but as Snow laughingly said "that is like asking someone after they have just given birth when they are having another baby"! Don't be discouraged though because after my first child I did have 6 more! I am joining BNOTP for Tablescape Thursday today and My Romantic Home for Show and Tell Friday. I hope you too enjoyed coming along today! Carolyn
