This is the Jones Farm - built C.1820-1835, interpreted 1850. This structure came to the Genesee Country Village & Museum from Orleans, NY (Livingston County). It is now located in the Antebellum section of the village. Now a little bit of history: Pioneer Ezra Jones arrived in the Genesee Country from CT. in 1805 and was able to purchase 120 acres of excellent land for wheat in what is now Ontario County. There, in the midst of a settled area he enjoyed the improved roads that placed him effectively nearer to the markets in Canandaigua and Geneva. The first dwelling of this ex-Continental army soldier was of logs. It may be reasonably assumed that his next major project was a frame barn, although no traces of such a structure survives. In the 1820s Jones erected this unpretentious story-and-a-half frame house. A summer kitchen wing was added in the 1830s. However, even this simple, serviceable dwelling was in time demoted to the role of tenant house when a large two-story Victorian country house was erected in the 1860s. Under a succession of roofs (and owners) the old Jones farmstead reflected a century of change in farmhouse architecture, as well as decoration. The Jones farmhouse at the Genesee Country Village & Museum is decorated with stenciled walls, probably done by an itinerent 19th-century artist, although some may have been done by the owners themselves. The Jones Farmhouse comes from Tileyard Road near Orleans, in Ontario County, and it was given to the museum by the Gillam brothers. Its design, derived from CT. precedents, is typical of the small early 19th-century Genesee Country timber-framed and clapboard-covered farmhouse. The house features one of the four working kitchens in the historic village. The museum is located at 1410 Flint Hill Road (George Street) in Mumford, NY.

Thomson's Tavern & Store. Built in 1808, it came to the Genesee Country Village & Museum from Riga, NY and is now located in the Antebellum Village section. Now a little bit of history: Joseph Thomson, from Peru, Massachusetts, erected a one-and-a-half story building along the well-traveled road to Braddock's Bay at what is now Riga Center, NY. His partner David Tuttle, remained in Peru minding another store and sending supplies to Thomson, who was busy establishing a trading post in their new buliding on the western NY frontier. Food and refreshment were available to those journeying through the area or coming to Thomson's for supplies. Drovers passing to and from the Niagara region found lodging for the night in one of the three upstairs bed chambers. A large arched ceiling meeting room or ballroom on the second floor could accommodate additional overnight guests when the place was crowded. A large brick oven in the basement baked bread for nearby settlers whose crude dwellings did not boast ovens. Thomson's old place which served as a store & post office, meeting place and bakery, came from Warren Adams, whose family held the property since acquiring it from Thomsons's heirs in 1845. Located in the Antebellum Village section at the Genesee Country Village & Museum, 1410 Flint Hill Road (George Street) in Mumford, NY.

Press release: Congressman Chris Collins (NY-27) and Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (NY-21) have introduced the Family Farm Relief Act of 2017, legislation to move the H-2A Agricultural Visa program from the Department of Labor to the Department of Agriculture to better meet the unique labor needs of farmers and agricultural businesses. “The last thing our farmers need is for the federal government to make it harder for them to make ends meet,” Congressman Collins said. “Access to a willing and available labor force is absolutely critical for Western New York’s agriculture community, particularly our dairy farmers. I am proud to join my colleague Congresswoman Stefanik in introducing this common-sense legislation to streamline and improve the H-2A visa program.” “Agriculture is the backbone of our North Country economy and I am pleased to introduce this important bill to address the labor shortages facing our farmers,” Congresswoman Stefanik said. “When I travel the district speaking with our farmers, I often hear about how unnecessary delays in worker visas lead to difficulty meeting production goals. This common-sense legislation simply puts the H-2A agricultural visa program in the hands of those who best understand the specific needs of our farms.” “Immigration reform that allows for both seasonal and year-round farm labor has been a longtime priority for New York Farm Bureau. For too long, the federal H2A guest visa program has been cumbersome, prone to delays and too rigid to fit the needs of both farmers and their employees. We thank Congresswoman Stefanik for taking the lead on The Family Farm Relief Act that will provide real reform and address a critical issue in New York's diverse agricultural community,” said David Fisher, New York Farm Bureau president. The Family Farm Relief Act of 2017 takes practical measures such as allowing visa applicants to fill out H-2A applications on paper or online, requiring a user-friendly online system, and ending burdensome requirements on advertising and prevailing practice surveys. The current H-2A visa program is unworkable, especially for the dairy farms across our nation. The H-2A visa program does not currently provide a category for year-round livestock workers, including dairy. This has caused difficulties for dairy farms that need employees year-round. This legislation addresses this oversight, by creating an H-2A category for these workers. Additionally, the legislation also allows farm cooperatives and other agricultural associations to apply for workers for their members, makes the program more workable for dairy and other livestock operations, and requires reporting to Congress if delays occur in the H-2A visa application process.
