Creating Proofs with Uno Cards is the most engaging and fun way to teach the most difficult lesson to your Geometry students. Here is how...
It took me a year and a half to complete my geometry curriculum, but I finally did it. I’m constantly updating and adding to it. I guess you could call it a living and growing curriculum. I…
With the beginning of our geometry units in 6th grade math, it has been all about angles and triangles this past week! Thanks to some creative (and cheap!) angle ideas I found on social media, I was able to incorporate some new things in my classroom this year as we start geometry! First off, this fun idea to reinforce a basic understanding of angles! With some leftover fun tape from Office Depot, a little card stock to write the angles, and about ten minutes, I made this fun entryway into the classroom. I can't take credit for the idea, but am happy to share it! It definitely caught the students attention and had them thinking about different angles! The second fun idea I found (again... can't take credit for this one) I was able to use with my math intervention groups this week. After we had learned about different angle relationships (vertical angles, supplementary angles, and complementary angles), I covered our front dry-erase table with table at various angles. I then went through and measure the minimum number of angles they would need to be able to find all of the missing angles without a protractor. This turned out to be a great problem solving challenge and really promoted teamwork and working together. I could also see this working out great as a math center during math workshop. UPDATE: I recently added a full set of Angle Relationships Task Cards to my TpT store! It currently includes over 70 challenging angle problems and 4 different levels of difficulty! With the start of geometry, I was also able to try out one of my newest units of Math Task Cards: Triangles, Quadrilaterals, and Transformations. I now have two sets of task cards up in my store. A set of Math Task Cards, which are a little more basic problems. Then, for students that finish these quickly, I have them try the Math Enrichment Task Cards. Having these more challenging task cards makes it easy to push my higher students and keep them challenged! Here are a couple shots of the prep and final product of some of these task cards. I always print out six cards for each topic, which is what I need for my math workshop front table group. If I have time I corner round the corners and laminate to help them last! Geometry has also allowed me to finally get to what is probably my favorite Challenge of the Week problem! I recently updated this freebie with five more questions that could be used, so be sure to re-download it if you have already grabbed this one from my store in the past! So that's what we have been up to in 6th grade math recently. I'd love to hear what you have all been working on in your classrooms! And how about some humor to get everyone on their way? Who knew that One Direction is now a swear word?

I really wish that I would have taken more pictures throughout our geometry unit. There are so many creative ideas out there to help solidify these concepts for kids. A few of the activities we did included: building various 2D and 3D shapes using marshmallows and toothpicks modeling various types of lines using pretzels (for the lines), M&Ms (for points and to create line segments), and candy corn (to show how the lines go on endlessly) creating foldables to remember different types of angles using the idea from Fabulous Fourth Grade! we also talked about transformations, using gross motor actions, and creating an interactive foldable. and my students' favorite activity: the symmetry activity! This center was pretty simple. Having 4th and 5th graders, it took just a few minutes of reviewing for the students to remember what symmetry is and for them to get the hang of creating a symmetric pattern. Students used their rulers to create the line of symmetry. We also added to a new interactive bulletin board, I will have to post pictures of that soon! Hope your having a wonderful fall, Mrs. Whitehair

I recently came across this idea on Pinterest, and I LOVE it. I am sorry, I don't know who the original credit goes to for coming up with this idea is...if you can claim it - let me know :) As we all know, getting students to understand the whole IDEA of a proof is difficult. Then throw in theorems, postulates, reasons, statements UGH...it's too much. The reason I love using Uno to start teaching proof is that you begin the lesson with something students are familiar with - many have played Uno before. The general idea is to give students some number of Uno cards. There is a card for them to begin with [GIVEN] and a card for them to end with [what they are trying to PROVE]. Students are also given some number of additional cards. Then they are asked to find a way to get from the GIVEN card to the PROVE card by playing a hand of Uno. For example, start the students with this layout of cards. Students may realize that if they start with the blue 8, the game could proceed by playing the green 8, then the green 1, the yellow 1, and finally ending with the yellow 3. The cards must be played in this order...if they aren't, the rules of the game are not followed. After a bit, you could introduce the Wild Card - it can be played just like in real Uno...you can use it to change to any color. It helps you move through the game, or in our case, the proof. Students must realize that they can't complete the game without using the Wild Card to change to the green color. After the students understand the idea, you could provide students with extra cards that aren't needed for the proof, but could be included. It isn't WRONG to put them in the proof, but they make the game (or proof) longer than necessary. Or, you might be given an extra card that CAN'T be included in the game - it doesn't fit at all. For example, In this case, the 5 isn't necessary at all. It's tempting to use it after the blue 0, but then you can't proceed without any of the other cards. Notice that we could just use the red 0 and the red 7 to finish the proof. The red 2 isn't necessary, but could be included. The proof would just be longer. After students understand the idea of sequencing the cards, then you can introduce the two column proof format. Want to try using this in your class? This has been my students' favorite project this year. The whole point is to have students use the geometric terms that they've learned in a creative way. You can use it as a way for students to learn and practice new vocabulary, or as a review project, or even as a culminating project after a unit on geometry. I have been developing this project over time, and I've worked out many of the kinks. It's not too big, and not too small. Basically, the students have 26 items that need to go on the Map/Town. Some of the items are lines or segments, which are the roads. Once those are placed, then the students need to place particular items in particular angles. For example, they need to put two coffee shops at corresponding angles. Or a bridge connecting supplementary angles. There is a template that has some of the basic lines (roads) already placed. You can use this for ALL of your students if you want them to focus on putting the other items in the correct angles. This would be much easier to grade, since it would be easy to locate all the required items, but it's not as creative. I used it for my inclusion kids. I heard the best academic language between students as they worked on this project - and they seemed to care more about the different types of angles as they did the project. This project includes: An overview, a list of required items, a legend template, grading guidelines, a modified scoring rubric, and photos of my students' work. Also, Geometry Glossary compliments the project very well: Geometry: Student Glossary and Vocabulary Other Geometry Products include: Volume of Cylinders, Cones, Spheres, and Composite Figures FREE Scaffolded Notes: Finding the Area of Parallelograms and Trapezoids Area & Perimeter: Triangle, Parallelogram, Trapezoid, Circle & Composite Figures Volume of Pyramids, Cones, and Spheres FREE Area of Rectangles and Trianglese FREE Angles Angles Angles FREE Understanding Angles: A Coloring Activity!
