Teaching functional skills in a functional manner is key to a child’s success. After all, if we teach something to a child and they cannot demonstrate the skill outside of our controlled environment or way of teaching have we really taught them anything? This becomes even more critical when working with some autistic children as many have a gestalt learning style which leads to rigidity of thinking and lack of generalization. When this happens, a child is able to perform a skill in the exact sam

The ultimate goal in helping gestalt language processors using an NLA framework, is naturally encouraging flexible & self generated language.
Gestalt language processing is a different way of learning and acquiring language. However, this way of developing language is common, natural, and valid! Gestalt Language Processors initially assign an overall “feeling” to a word, phrase, or sentence. These learners often focus on the intonation of language instead of the individual words. These words, phrases, and sentences are called “gestalts.” These gestalts are commonly known as “echolalia” or “scripting.” A child often begins by imitating whole phrases they hear in their environment, including media (T.V. shows, songs, etc.). For example, a gestalt language processor might use “ready, set, go” to express that they want to go outside. Important note: The language we model is not a gestalt - it’s just our language! Stage 1 gestalts are individual to the child. These phrases are not meant to be explicitly “taught”. Rather, they can be utilized to help caregivers and therapists learn how to model language during play. This 12-page handout packet includes examples of stage 1 gestalts for a variety of routines and play activities. Great for therapists or parents looking to model a wider variety of gestalts. Handouts come in both a color and printer-friendly version, and are great for hanging on the fridge as a daily reminder. Stage 1 gestalt topics include: -meal time -bath time -potty -transitions -bedtime -brushing teeth -getting dressed -TV time -farm toys -blocks -cars -play-doh -magnatiles -letter/number play -books -songs -peek-a-boo -tag/chase -tickles -rough play -self-advocacy -peer interaction -sick/hurt -greetings/farewells
This Echolalia & Gestalt Language Processing Information & Data Set is the perfect addition your therapy room or classroom! With Natural Language Acquisition and Gestalt Language Processing gaining momentum within the speech-language community, this product provides valuable introductory information for caregivers, speech-language pathologists, teachers, and related professionals serving preschool, school-aged, and adolescent echolalic communicators. Natural Language Acquisition learners acquire “chunks” of language, called “gestalts” or “delayed echolalia.” As opposed to Analytic Language Processors, who learn and use language progressively from single words to multi-word utterances, Gestalt Language Processors may use previously heard verbal message which become emotionally meaningful for that child. This resource is designed to introduce the concept of Gestalt Language Processing and provide techniques for facilitating communication for children with delayed echolalia. Gestalt Language Processors learn and use words, phrases, and sentences as a unit, carrying meaning not word-by-word, but as a whole. It can be difficult to determine if your child is a gestalt language processor unless the gestalt is significantly different in vocabulary, syntax, and message from the gestalt language processor’s spontaneously generated language. That's why this resource also provides quantitative and qualitative data collection methodologies to collect meaningful information as we facilitate our communicator’s progression across developmental stages unique to Gestalt Language Processors. By understanding and supporting the unique language acquisition process of Gestalt Language Processors, you can help your child develop effective communication skills and overcome barriers to social and academic success. Get started today with this comprehensive resource. This resource provides: Color and black-and-white informational handouts about echolalia and gestalt language processing utilizing professional language, definitions, and examples for caregivers, teachers and related professionals Data collection sheets to collect meaningful quantitative data measuring percentage of utterances that are self-generated, mitigated or whole gestalts, percentage of utterances used for various communicative functions, and percentage of utterances at various stages of development Data collection sheets to collect meaningful qualitative data by analyzing language samples according to structure, function, and developmental level Overall, this resource is designed to encourage communication partners to interpret echolalia and gestalts as meaningful communication, and provide professionals ways to track each child’s progress through developmental stages. Low-tech AAC: Communication Boards I created these communication boards to use with my students who are either gestalt language learners or students who process language better visually, rather than verbally/auditorily. I use them as a visual to aid in comprehension when asking them questions or talking about something with them, and I also use them as a visual prompt to cue them to tell me something that they need, want, feel, or think. How to use: Laminate and cut out the communication boards and bind them in a PECS binder, with binder rings, or staple them together. There are eight boards included: Work Feelings Social Play Wants & Needs Problem Blank page: use a dry erase marker to write in phrases that the student may need in the moment that aren't already included (e.g. "It's too hot", "I can do it", etc.). Blank template: formatted the same as the other pages but empty boxes for you to add your own pictures and/or text. Files can now be downloaded as a PDF or a PowerPoint File so you have editing access.
