Ukrainian Institute of America (1955) Augustine & Anne van Horne Stuyvesant Mansion (1930) Harry & Elizabeth Sinclair Mansion (1918) Isaac & Mary Fletcher Mansion (1898) French Chateau (1897–98) Architect: C.P.H. Gilbert 2 E. 79th St. Metropolitan Museum District Upper East Side, New York Built for Isaac Dudley Fletcher (1844–1917) and Mary Elizabeth Pickering (1847–1914), married in 1873. He was president of the coal tar distillation firm Page, Kidder & Fletcher Co., which became Barrett Manufacturing Co. in 1896. The mansion and their large art collection were left to the Metropolitan Museum in Fletcher’s will. The Met sold the house the next year to Harry Sinclair. Included in the Fletcher bequest was a painting by Jean-François Raffaëlli called “The Fletcher Mansion, New York City” (1899). The mansion became the home of Henry F. Sinclair (1876–1956) and Elizabeth Farrell (1879–1964) from 1918 to 1930. They had married in 1904. He founded Sinclair Oil (1916) and was involved in the Teapot Dome scandal (1922). Sinclair was imprisoned in 1929 and sold the mansion upon his release in 1930. The house was bought by Augustus van Horne Stuyvesant (1870–1953) and his sister Anne (1872–1938), the last direct descendants of Peter Stuyvesant. They lived out their lives here as recluses.
