[ITALY.LIGURIA 29000] Pond in the Hanbury Botanical Gardens. On the side of the pond - not in the water - grow the large, kidney-shaped leaves of Farfugium japonicum 'Giganteum'. In 1867, the German landscape architect Ludwig Winter came to the Riviera and met the Englishman Thomas Hanbury, who had become rich with imports of tea and silk from India and China. He absolutely loved Capo Mortola, had acquired the ruin of the 16th century palazzo on the cape and gradually managed to get his hands on the 18 hectares of agricultural land around it. Winter was allowed to transform it into a series of gardens, where Thomas, together with his brother Daniel, pharmacologist and botanist, started acclimatizing exotic plants, including medicinal varieties. The gardens soon gained fame and are the origin of the current Giardini Botanici Hanbury. Photo Mick Palarczyk.

It was a must-see for us as we had plenty of time to spare before our flight home.

This past week, I traveled to New Jersey for a family wedding. Many adventures ensued, but one that was indeed memorable was my trip alongside my sister, Mary, to the New Jersey Botanical Garden at Skylands Manor. The garden, located in Ridgewood, New Jersey, is free and open to the public. It is a treasure to be savored, so leave plenty of time for your visit! The Tudor Mansion was breathtaking. We didn't go inside, but tours are available on the weekends. It was built in the late 1800s and was privately owned until 1957 when the home and

Did you know the Barbican Centre is home to the second biggest botanical garden conservatory in London? Unbelievable, right? Concealed among the brutalist complex lies a dreamlike urban jungle with more than 2000 species of tropical plants. Often overshadowed by the impressive botanical collections at Kew Gardens, many tourists and Londoners are oblivious to the hidden oasis that grows within the heart of the city. See more of Barbican Conservatory in my post here.
