The Bled Gorge (Slovene: Blejski Vintgar) or Vintgar Gorge (Soteska Vintgar) is a 1.6 kilometres (0.99 mi)-long gorge located in Slovenia in the Municipality of Gorje near the settlement of Zgornje Gorje, four kilometers northwest of Bled. Carved by the Radovna River, the sheer canyon walls are 50 to 100 metres (160 to 330 ft) high, with a total slope measuring about 250 m (820 ft). The stream has created many erosive features such as pools and rapids, and terminates in the picturesque 13 m (43 ft) Šum Falls (literally, 'noisy falls'). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vintgar

Gorges, also known as canyons, are deep ravines found between cliffs. They are formed from the landscape after being carved by rivers which naturally reach a baseline elevation, creating these stunning natural visuals in the process. Canyons are pretty common in arid areas due to the effect that physical weathering has in such zones. The word ‘canyon’ has a Spanish origin with many being found in the United States while Europeans prefer to use the term "gorge".
This is the reverse view of an earlier photo taken at the exact opposite end of the year (28 December). The tiny Fairmile Road, single track with grass growing down the middle, was once one of the UK's main Roman roads, laid through the Lune Gorge by Agricola in 79CE to link Ribchester (~85 km away by modern roads), near Preston, to Carlisle. It evolved into Wicker Street, the main western route from Manchester to Carlisle and hence Hadrian's Wall. As I mentioned in the previous image's caption, I hope the signposted cattle grid didn't cause the Legions too much trouble. It's now part of the 'Pennine Cycleway' (Route 68 of the National Cycle Network), though I can't say I've ever encountered a cyclist here. The sunlit ridge on the left of the background is the foot of Birk Knott, on the other side of the Lune; the artificial cliff below the trees is the side of the A685 main road from Kendal to Tebay, and the pylons of the electrified West Coast Main Line railway are visible, but the M6 motorway and the River Lune itself are hidden from this angle. The hill behind the sign forms the northern side of Borrowdale (not the better-known Borrowdale at the heart of the Lake District) is Casterfell Hill (367 m) on Roundthwaite Common. Jeffrey's Mount, at 378 m smaller but more prominent overlooking the Lune Gorge (aka 'Lune Gap'), is just off the right of the image.
