Looking for an easy science activity? Today I'm excited to share this sink or float free printable. It's fun one that is great for all ages. It can be a quick activity or if you're looking for something to keep them busy this summer, you can add lots of items to "test". There are 2 versions you can download and print for free. One has some suggested items to try out and one is blank. For the blank one you can have the kids gather a bunch of items they want to test out and write them down themselves. For little ones that can't write yet, have them draw the object.

Are you feeling overwhelmed with the new BC curriculum? It can be a lot to transform your entire year of teaching. I'm here to help you out! This past year I worked with the new science curriculum in my classroom and a colleagues. These units are all very hands-on and lab based. By the end of any of these units your students will have an excellent understanding of the Scientific Method. Grade 3 At the end of this unit, students will make solar ovens and cook S'mores. So much fun! They were really delicious too. If we did this again, I would like to make English muffin pizzas. Grade 4 This short unit covers all 10 energy kinetic and potential energy types and their transfer. Kids love breaking down the process of energy transfer in the "Ball Bounce" lab. This unit contains resources to teach all aspects of matter: molecules, kinetic energy, phase change, effect of temperature and more. Be prepared to purchase several packages of balloons from the dollar store for this unit. I used them A LOT. They were great to show the effect of temperature on a gas as well as many other things. This one one of my favourite lessons in the unit - physical and chemical change. Students investigated 6 different white powders to determine what type of change they were. They loved using pipettes to drop the mystery liquid on and watch what happened! The oohs and aahs were hilarious! Grade 5 I loved teaching this unit! So many fun activities can be done with every day objects when teaching Simple Machines! Again, this unit has everything: informational articles, interactive notebook foldables, detailed lesson plans, lab activities.... No need for any supplementary resources here! Even a study sheet and test is included! If you're just looking for something to supplement your Simple Machines unit, each of the lessons are sold separately too. Just click on the image above and follow the links from there to the individual files. Concentration, pH, dissolving, and filtration: these are all concepts covered in the Solutions unit. Students loved being able to use "real" science tools like litmus paper and use their problem solving skills to filter clean drinking water. Grade 4/5 Split The grade 4 and 5 units are both available in a bundle if you teach a grade 4/5 split as I did last year. In these units you'll find everything you would if you purchased separately, as well as a combined unit study sheet and test. They are both sold for 20% off of the price of buying individually. Here is an introductory lesson to what Science is. Many young students may not have a good grasp of just what science is so this worksheet give them the idea that there are really 3 areas of Science: Life, Earth and Physical Science. They are given the words that will be used in sentences on the next page. This worksheet would work for 2nd and 3rd graders who can read well. When this worksheet is done, you could have them cut and paste pictures from magazines into the 3 areas described as a collage or have a discussion on what areas of science different objects in the room would go into. Even though planets technically go with physical science, I put them in with the earth science group as that would make more sense to them at this point. I did not give them the names Life Science, Earth Science and Physical Science but you could if you want to.
Teaching states of matter in kindergarten can be a tricky! Here are some resources to help students gain a solid understanding of the topic!
Learning the levels of organization, that is! My students are working hard on our living systems unit. Our newest anchor chart is all about the organization of living things. I am a huge fan of anchor charts because it helps my students organize the content into bite sized pieces. In our living systems unit we discuss the levels of organization, plant and animal cells, classification and cell theory. I like to make an anchor chart for each of the different topics and hang them around the room as we complete them. Even more than that, I like the students to have their own copies of each anchor chart. So while I'm building a big one, they are making a smaller version at their desks. The levels of organization student version has all the boxes, but they're all mixed up. The students first figure out which boxes go together and then color those boxes to match. Once colored they are cut and pasted to the empty boxes on the final page. I love that my students end a unit with a set of anchor charts all their own. By the end of the year they have a nice science collection, highlighting the content they learned in a way that's easy to reference and, hopefully, easy to remember! The Let's Build: Levels of Organization Anchor Chart can be found here. The Let's Build: Levels of Organization student version can be found here.
This blog post is filled with a variety of hands-on activities that will introduce & teach your students all about different types of energy.
Mark off a 1 square meter (or yard) section of grass. Scatter a selection of colored toothpicks in the marked off area – you will want to count the number of toothpicks of each color before you scatter them. Provide a group of students with ~15 seconds to pick up as many toothpicks as they can find. Count and record the number of each color that was collected. Repeat this exercise several more times. After returning inside, students can graph the data. You should find that the green toothpicks were found in smaller numbers, especially in the early trials.
