Wow! What a wonderful Christmas we had! So nice to be with the family, relaxing, eating, laughing, and loving life. I hope everyone had a great holiday too. Fern is having a linking party over on her blog Fern Smith's Classroom Ideas. I really debated about this one because I'm a new blogger and when I saw Kristin's numbers over on Teeny Tiny Teacher, I thought no way, my numbers are so small compared to hers in the thousands! But Holly on Crisscross Applesauce gave me courage. If she can do it so can I. Thanks Holly! The linking party is called Top Three. You check your blog stats and tell what your top three posts have been this year. Here are mine: 3rd: Christmas Story Mats- 243 2nd: Counting Syllables- 335 1st: Grinch Day- 1,609 So if you haven't checked these out, click on the red words and do so! Also, click on my blogging friends above and check theirs out as well. Then, head over to Fern's blog and join the party!
Hello Everyone! Welcome back for a peek! We have been enjoying that timeless story "The Grinch" this week and I wanted to share a little bit of what we've been up to. Today we played a fun whole group game that I call Grinch Triple Toss. We needed to practice our addition strategies as well as adding three addends, so I made a huge work mat ( a snowflake shape cut out of a round plastic table cloth) and wrote numbers 1-10 on some green (of course) paper plates. We used three large pom poms to toss on to the numbers and talked about the strategies we would use to get our sum. The kids had a recording sheet to show their thinking. So fun! Tomorrow we'll reinforce subtraction skills with the same idea!!(Grinch Toss and Take) We also worked hard on our text connection ideas for "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." We reviewed what each connection meant and then created our little heart books connecting all our connection! As one of my kiddos said, "It's all about the heart!" Enjoy the pics. We used green pencils for recording of course! Made a large snowflake from a plastic table cloth kids take turns tossing pom poms and then working on the addition problems Make a ten and then add the 7!! Yes!! For your printables of these two activities, click here Our Text Connection anchor with The Grinch looking on! for my grinch unit , click here Thanks for stopping by!! We are having a great week! Joyfully! Nancy

Hello Everyone! I hope you all had a wonder-filled Thanksgiving! I am so grateful for this time with my family. We were able to go up to Cleveland to help my oldest son move into his new home. He has taken a new investigative reporter position at the ABC affiliate there!! I know all of you in Indiana are going to miss him, but this is an amazing opportunity for him! Yes, he is now further from his TEXAS home, but…whatever it takes, right?! We did have a little time to visit downtown, and I have to say…It is beautiful!!! There is so much to do in this vibrant city. I think he is going to love it! Thanks for letting me brag about him a little! We are very proud of him. But now it’s time to think about school again. These next few weeks are my favorite times of year to teach first graders. The wonder and innocence they bring to the season is such a beautiful reminder of the joy and love that comes with this time of giving. One of my favorite books to enjoy with the kids is Santa’s Stuck by Rhonda Gowler Greene (readily available on Amazon). I have shared my unit packed with ELA, Math, and Science, but I have added some more to fit with what we are working on right now as our curriculum continues to evolve. If you have used this unit before, please download again to get the new activities. For your free 100 page printable unit, CLICK HERE!!! And the season would not be complete without some time spent on that iconic GREEN GUY!! You know who I’m talking about! I’ve added more to this unit too!! Download again, friends!! These are just a few pieces to the unit! There is so much more! For your own 100 page printable unit, CLICK HERE!!!!:) Thanks for stopping by for this quick update! I hope you have a great week back and you can enjoy these next few weeks with your kids!! Keep doing what you're doing, and don't forget to find the joy in this journey!! Joyfully!! Nancy
If you've been following the 12 Days of Christmas Read Alouds - we are now on DAY 9!!!! GRINCH DAY!!!!! My favorite! We started off the day with a little photo shoot with our life-size Grinch in front of our mini (Charlie Brown-type tree) in my classroom. We will be putting these in ornaments this week. Here is a picture of one of my cuties! The we read the book - of course! After that we did a sequencing activity and a bubble map with adjectives that describe the Grinch. Sorry I forgot to take pictures of that. In Math we used Made for 1st Grade Grinch Problem Solving packet. Very cute word problems and perfect for my firsties! I changed the cover because I cut and pasted the problems right into the book to save time for the kiddos. You can download this freebie from them HERE Another activity we did came from this adorable little unit, A Pinch of Grinch. You can get this one from Nancy Vanden Berge First Grade Wow. This is just one of the many cute ideas she has. How to Make a Grinch Grin!!! This next activity was by no means my idea, but I can't pinpoint where I got the idea first. I've seen it all over pinterest and in many different places so I can't be sure who to credit for the idea. What I will take credit for is the actual craft shown here because I did draw that. It took a long time and I know it not perfect, but I am happy with the way it turned out. FINALLY.....while the kids were writing, guess who showed up for a visit??????? THE GRINCH!!!!!! The kids loved it and of course we got a class picture. And at the end of the day I gathered with the other teachers and aides for a group picture. We found our T-shirts at Target (the best store on EARTH!). It was such a fun day! Happy Grinch Day everyone!!!!! :-)
