I've been blogging about teaching multiplication lately, and have mentioned playing a game called Sparkle as part of our memorization process. Today I thought I would explain how we do this in my classroom. Basically we are skip counting by ones, twos, etc. We call this "Secret Code Sparkle," because we're just cool like that. =) This is a cooperative practice game that requires listening skills. If a student is talking, they will not know the answer. Uh-oh. They learn pretty quickly to pay close attention to what is going on. It also teaches students how to handle the frustration of being out of the game, whether they have made a mistake, or through no fault of their own. (I have students model good and bad ways to respond when they get "sparkled". I have found that third graders also need to learn how to be gracious winners, so we model that, too.) Here are the basic rules: 1. Have your students stand in a large circle around the outside of the classroom. 2. The teacher stands in the middle. 3. NO moving once you have found your spot! 4. The teacher chooses a number from 1 - 10 and points to a random student, saying, for example, "Count by twos to twenty, GO!" (The teacher holds up two fingers while always facing the student who is speaking, in case they forget the factor being used.) Be careful at this point! If they get going really fast, you could get very dizzy! 5. The first student repeats the number, the next student (going clockwise) says the next skip counting number, and so on, until the original number has been multiplied by ten. 6. When the last number is stated, the next student says, "Sparkle!" 7. The student after the sparkle student sits down. They are out of the game. 8. If a student says the wrong number, or takes too long to answer, they must sit down. (Because of Whole Brain Teaching, the entire class says, "It's cool!" when someone makes a mistake - making it much easier for students to handle!) 9. The last student (or students - you decide when to stop) standing get a reward. This can be anything: first choice for centers, an extra minute of recess, first in line to lunch, a reading buddy (stuffed animal) on their desk during quiet reading, a lollipop, etc. Whatever is a reward in your classroom. (I know that many of us have special needs students in our classroom. I have found that my students naturally give more wait time when it's needed, and extra positive feedback for a correct answer, etc. I do allow certain students to "sit out" the game, if they are having a bad day.) There are many variations on this theme: A. Use spelling words every Friday before the test. B. Use vocabulary words, but instead of spelling them, the first student defines the word, and the second must use it in a sentence. (This works best with smaller groups during centers.) C. Use parts of speech. Say, "Give me 5 verbs, GO!", "Give me seven nouns, GO!", etc. We have a lot of fun practicing what we have learned with this game, while learning important listening skills, speaking skills, and social skills. Do you use this game in your classroom? I would love to hear other ways that it is used! Please let me know in the comments. Happy Teaching With Sparkle,

A few years ago, our school implemented "voice levels" as a way to help at assemblies, in hallways, and within our classrooms. This has really helped with consistency across the grade levels and made the first few weeks of school even easier when introducing these concepts. In our school, if a teacher needs to get students' attention, he/she will hold up our hand in the shape of a zero. If kids are working in small groups and are getting a little noisy, I would hold up two fingers to remind them it was "Voice Level 2". When we create presentation rubrics, we always include "Voice Level 3" as an area to focus on. In the beginning of the year, when we are making our Daily 5 Anchor Charts around expectations, Voice Levels 0, 1, and 2 always make an appearance. I have loved thinking of Voice Level 1 (whisper) as "Spy Talk"! In the past, I have used the fingers-on-the-voicebox trick~ if it vibrates, it's not Voice Level 1~ but the idea of talking like a spy is soooooo much more fun! This year, I ask my Teacher's Assistant to help be my Voice Level Monitor. If they feel it is getting too noisy, they will assist me in showing the appropriate voice level with our finger(s). Here is the file for the poster (I recently changed over my font, so it looks slightly different). **UPDATE: If you like this idea, you will love my new Voice Levels Management Pack available on TpT! Be sure to download the Preview to see everything that's included and read my updated post HERE for more info! Enjoy!

Have you used QR Codes in the classroom yet? Here are a few easy ideas that will get you started using QR Codes in your classroom.
You know these funny little pictures you see floating around Facebook and Pinterest, we see them and we laugh and nod our head. Well I'm hear to tell you it is true and it really isn't a laughing matter. Think about it- what other profession has to have a substitute when the employee is sick. If I worked at an office, my co-workers would just have to pick up the slack, or my job just doesn't happen and all my work is still piled up waiting for my return. If I worked at the grocery store, the lines might be a little longer due to one less checker. When teachers are sick what happens.? Stage 1 Denial First we pretend we aren't sick. We tell people it's allergies. We then say, I feel fine, I just sound terrible. Stage 2 The Little White Lie We tell people we aren't contagious. We lie and say, 'it's just a cold". Stage 3 Admitting We Are Sick There comes a point when we've gone too far. Our body is shaking because we feel like we are in a freezer. There is a loud pounding in our head as if we were at a Bon Jovi concert. Finally we admit it. We say those 2 awful words every teacher can't stand to say... I'M SICK! What happens next is so different for us teachers than it is for anyone else. We can't just say those 2 little words and crawl into bed. Stage 4 Panic This is when we start to panic. We have to get a substitute teacher and prepare lesson plans. Sometimes we even have to go to school and set everything up. I've been there on a Sunday night in my pajamas, almost falling over because the world was spinning, but I couldn't let my kinder kids down. I had to leave plans. #thestruggleisreal Now if you are lucky, you might have a regular substitute or two that you can depend on. When I know in advance I will be out, I have an amazing substitute. It has gotten to where I can literally leave her a post-it note. I don't have to make special sub plans. She knows my kids, my routines and how I do things. To make it better, she even knows to grab my iPad and snap photos of what the kids are doing. BUT… what happens when she can't come at the last minute. This is usually when I relapse into Stage 1 DENIAL--I tell myself just go in you can make it through the day, because I know the alternative could be tragic. Let me paint you a picture of a few options I have. Option #1, is me with my head on the desk, begging the kids to not write too loudly. Option #2 THE SUB FINDER. This is our system. We get on the computer, check a few boxes and then it begins calling the 5 people on our preferred list. They of course either already have a job or don't want it. Next, it randomly calls people on our district sub list until someone excepts the job. Stage 5 Anxiety From the comforts of my couch I keep checking the system to see if the job has been filled. My fear is that no one will take the job. Then it happens a name appears and you feel even worse because you know your room will be destroyed, nothing will get done and your teaching partners will be texting you all day to tell you what is going on. Before I go on and tell you my tragic stories of substitute teachers- I will say that I have a lot of respect for those who are guest teachers. I used to be one, so I know how hard the job is. After my very first day of being a sub, I went home and cried and said I don't want to teach ever again. Now that the shoe is on the over foot, I also know how to prepare for a sub. I teach my kids to be on their best behavior when I am gone and I don't expect everything to go smoothly. I expect the sub to do their best to follow my plans, but most of all, take care of my babies. So why do I worry when the sub job goes to a random stranger? It has nothing to do with a stranger teaching my babies or being in my room and snooping through my drawers. It has to do with the fear that my babies might not be taken care of. Let me list some of the "Guest Teachers" I've had in the past. #1 Mr. Rubber Rain-boots and Piccolo: Yes- the first thing he did was enter the room, take off his rubber boots and proceed to play the piccolo. #2 Here's Jack: According to my colleagues he looked like Jack Nicholson from The Shining. At one point he took one of my girls to the office and told the principal to talk to her about her behavior. Of course my principal wanted to know who was with my class if he was in the office. No one was with them they were just left alone. Oh and my room has no windows and there is a lonesome hallway before you enter my door. #3 I Don't Follow the Lesson Plans: I'm not really a teacher, I just signed up to play one; it's easy money. This person doesn't have any idea of how to work with kids, they just let the kids have free choice and hand out the assignments without ever explaining them. #4 The Homeless Looking Guy: According to my colleagues they thought he was a grandparent because he was waiting outside the door with the kids. He looked homeless and smelled a bit. I know that at another school they gave him a t-shirt to wear and keep. #5 Mrs. Zero Tolerance: I'm fine for coming in strong, showing the kids you're in charge, but there is a limit. You can't just farm all the kids out to my colleagues to make your day a little easier. Stage 6 Acceptance and Healing At some point after the bell rings we have to accept the fact that we won't be going in. We have to put our phone on silent and ignore the texts and missed calls from colleagues and begin to heal. If we spend our time worrying and checking in all day how are we going to recover quickly. After all, the goal for staying home when you're sick is to recoup and make a speedy recovery. I know I'm not the only one with crazy substitute tales. I also know we've all been through these 6 stages of being sick. I invite you to share your tales with me and my readers. It's simple, Link up below and use the image to link back here. Ice floats because it is less dense than water: if you weigh a cube of ice, and weigh exactly the same volume of water, the ice will weigh a little bit less. But you can make ice sink by putting it in a liquid that is less dense than water. Here are some fun experiments with density. Objects from top to bottom: Styrofoam, wood, pecan, cherry tomato, blueberry, chocolate chip, steel bolt, hard candy Ages 5 and up; Download Printable PDF Experiment 1: Layered Liquids You will need: clear plastic cups newspapers (to contain spills) corn syrup vegetable oil food coloring objects to test (cherry tomatos, grapes, chocolate, hard candy, small metal objects, beads, bits of Styrofoam...) Preparation Pour corn syrup into a plastic cup until the cup is about a quarter full. In another cup, mix water and food coloring (don't make the liquid too dark- you want to be able to see through it). Slowly pour the colored water over the corn syrup until the cup is about half full. Then slowly pour vegetable oil over the water layer until the cup is three quarters full. The liquids should remain in three separate layers. The corn syrup and water will eventually mix with the water, but if you pour carefully, this will take time. Instructions Carefully drop objects such as bits of styrofoam, wood, nuts or bolts, cherry tomatos, and grapes into the layered liquid. List the objects and liquids in order of increasing density (from top to bottom). What’s Happening? Think about how the compositions of the solids compare to the composition of the liquids in the glass. Hard candy is mostly sugar, and has a density near that of corn syrup, which is also mostly sugar. So hard candy sits in the corn syrup layer. Nuts a high fat content, and thus stay in the oil layer. Chocolate chips contains both sugar and oil, and have a density intermediate to that of water and corn syrup. Blueberries and tomatoes are mostly water, and have densities similar to that of water. Wood and styrofoam are filled with pockets of air, and float in oil. The steel bolt is quite dense, and sinks in all the liquids. Experiment 2: Sinking Ice You Will Need: cups vegetable oil water ice cubes Instructions Fill one cup with water, and another cup with oil. Drop an ice cube into each cup. Does it float or sink? What's happening? The simple explanation: Ice is, of course, frozen water. But in ice the molecules form a crystal lattice that spaces them further apart than in liquid water, so ice is less dense than water. Ice is denser than oil, however, and sinks in this liquid. The hard-core explantation: Scientists define density as mass per unit volume (density = mass/volume). Volume is an easy concept to understand: it is the amount of space something occupies. Kids, for example, are typically smaller than grownups and occupy less space. So, you could say that the volume of a kid is less than the volume of a grownup. Mass is a bit trickier. We measure mass using a scale, but what are we really measuring? A chemist might say that we are measuring the amount of matter in a sample: the more matter a sample has, the higher the mass. Imagine you are holding a brick and a Styrofoam block of exactly the same size and shape. The volume of each is the same. But the brick has a higher mass than the Styrofoam block because it contains more matter; it is therefore has a higher mass. A physicist defines mass a little differently. According to a simplified physical definition, mass is a measure of the acceleration a body will experience when a given force is applied. This sounds pretty complicated, but in our everyday experience, the only important force is the force of gravity. A brick feels heavier to us than a Styrofoam block because the Earth is pulling on it with more force. In space, there would be no difference in how heavy each one felt. When we use a scale, we are actually measuring the pull of the Earth on an object; in the absence of gravity, a scale would not work. So, next time you pick up a brick, think about how hard the Earth is pulling it away from you. Did you Know? The Great Salt Lake is very salty, and people who swim in it float higher than they do in fresh water. Do you think salt water is more or less dense than fresh water?

Whether we're talking about politics or the animal kingdom, learning something new can require a fair amount of time and effort. Luckily, we don't always have to read lengthy scientific papers. Some people do it for us. And not only that — they narrow down everything to a few bullet points and illustrate them to help our minds remember.
From anchor charts to board games and free printables, these ideas will drive the concept home.
