I’ve been sharing David Burnett’s Holga work in my toy camera classes for years, but I wanted to revist the work he makes with his 55-year-old 4-by-5-inch Graflex Speed Graphic camera. David has been photographing the world for more than 35 years, working as an editorial and documentary photographer, traveling the globe. He co-founded Contact

So many of us have a fantasy of living in Paris. Perhaps we envision a small pied-a-terre that we could visit a few times a year, and pretend to be Parisian. We would go to the markets and buy the most beautiful food, and prepare perfect little French meals in our tiny city kitchen. I have had so many small kitchens in many rented apartments. Yet I always enjoyed cooking, and often turned out large meals for dinner parties, and brunches. A small kitchen was never daunting. It was just a way of life. A few months ago, I stumbled on a gem of a cooking show called "The Little Paris Kitchen". It was charm at first sight. A young woman from the UK was showing classic simple French food prepared in her teeny-tiny kitchen. There were scenes of her shopping in those very markets of my dreams. Rachel Khoo shopping for food in Paris Rachel Khoo in her little Paris kitchen A Spanish style tile back splash will give you the look The tiles could be from Mexico The tiles could be from Morocco or Portugal I did some research on the girl, who is Rachel Khoo. The TV show was an off-shoot of cook book she was writing called "The Little Paris Kitchen". So she tested recipes, for diners who paid to have dinner in "the smallest restaurant in Paris", which was her apartment. The BBC filmed a half donzen shows of that experience. The Little Paris Kitchen Rachel's oven looks like a toy I love this cook book, The Little Paris Kitchen now available in the USA Rachel calls herself a "food creative", which entails cooking, writing, TV, event planning, styling, branding - anything creative to do with food. Her cook book just came out in the USA this past month, and I got it, and I love it, and yes, I have made a few things from it. The lavender chicken rocks. Not only am I charmed by her food, I am charmed by the idea of a small picturesque yet functional kitchen. This month at Houzz, I did my Guest Picks based on Rachel Khoo's little Paris kitchen. I tell you where to find decorative things that you could use to create her look, and functional cooking equipment that every French cook has. Instructions for living a life: Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it. ~ Mary Oliver Yesterday I started a series of workshops at Percolator Gallery .... I'll return with some images of that soon. One of the participants, Katrina Stirling, has already posted at her blog on the workshop which was wonderful to discover. "Colours of nature" is a workshop I put together as a way to combine my love of both .... and to offer others a chance to think much more about what is the relationship they have with color... and also perhaps nature. This small drawing below is one of Katrina's from the class which she had posted on the blog... click on her name above to read that post! Katrina Stirling The small poem above by Mary Oliver perhaps best describes the essence for me of what it means to respond to the natural world. If one looks closely enough there is much to be astonished about and tell of! And it does require we pay attention. That is something that I like to think workshops provide a wonderful opportunity for... not only does the facilitator bring things forward for others to pay attention to ... but each participant is likely also to present some insight and a certain quality of thinking and feeling that might also resonate with others and prove invaluable...
Christmas is in the memories and the new year is just around the corner. The darkest day is gone and slowly the light is returning. This fall went past so quickly that I really don't know just where it went, I never intended to neglect the blog as much as I ended up doing. I did knit some but not as much as I have done during the past years. The blog turned five years in October and it is sort of amazing to be still here. I would not be if there were not you, so thank you for being here for all these years. During the fall I did knit few hats that were all given away, they were knit out of necessity. I finished few cowls, few little scarves and couple of socks, and all of those were gone the minute they were off the needles, they were either used right away or wrapped into the gift paper. I managed to get pictures of Wallflower socks and of Maya, as they visited the house during the holidays, both of them have seen some use already, but I thought they were in good enough shape to be photographed. Since much of my knitting was Christmas related and finished by December 24th, it was time to get something else on the needles. As always it is difficult to pick up a new project so I ended up digging through the ufo pin and came across Ice Fantasia. Ice Fantasia (no picture yet, you all know how lace looks on the needles, not much) is a beautiful shawl designed by Anne Hanson and I cast on for it in the spring of 2009. I had some trouble getting started on it again but now the progress is quite good and the lightness of lace is working its magic on my knitting mojo. (I am now in part D in Ice Fantasy, it has patterning in both sides so the progress is going to slow down ...) I am truly hoping for mojo to return, it has been so odd not to be feeling the love of the process. I have knitted, but I have been missing the deep love, more or less my knitting has just been occupying the idle hands when watching TV and since I watch so very little, not very much has been accomplished. I did visit few yarn shops to see if there were interesting new yarns out there and I did come across two that I have not noticed before: Rustic Naturgarn (Karen Noe Design) 58% bourettesilk 42% cotton Rowan Lima 84% baby alpaca 8% merino 8% nylon I don't know what I will use them for and I really bought them just to remind me of the many different structures yarn can have and to give some boost on the spinning. I don't think I have even scratched the surface what it comes to spinning. Spinning is so often just this quiet act and I spin away in lost thoughts but really I should put some thought into it and try to produce something interesting. Few weeks ago I received a beautiful book. It is written by two lovely Estonian women, Anu Raud and Anu Kotli. I took a workshop from Anu Kotli some years ago and she really taught me to knit. With this I mean that she gave me the toolbox and the courage to knit any shape and any figure and taught me to see the possibilities of yarn and that yarn can be sculpted into just about any form with few increases and decreases. The book ia called Kiri Kari, it is in Estonian and has the schematics for many animal patterns plus it has lots of traditional Estonian knitting patterns in the back of the book. The photos are just beautiful. (The isbn of the book is 9789985996416.) I hope you all had beautiful holidays and are now well rested and ready to turn the new knitting page. So wool with you in 2011! Love, Lene
