Almost a shame to unravel these skeins of one-off handspuns, and knit them into garments; I sigh with appreciation each time I wind one off. Of course the acknowledgement of the wonder of the material is part of the process, so is the loopiness that creeps in when working long hours solely.
The tenth edition of The Cuttle Corner features handspun singles ready to ply into yarn. There is also knitting and crocheting.
As a person who has a passion for spinning, I am so excited to make this kit available to you; like any artist, I want to share my craft with others. Though I do my spinning on a spinning wheel, this kit is targeted for those of you who have often thought about learning how to spin on a drop spindle. You may not have known where to start, or were, perhaps, intimidated by the cost not knowing if drop spindling is for you or not. This kit includes a handcrafted spindle from the wood shoppe of A Hand Spun Yarn, 2 oz. of cleaned and carded Border Leicester wool, a paper describing the anatomy of a drop spindle, and a leader line. The quantity of fiber included in this kit is ample enough to give you the freedom to make mistakes and have assurance you have enough product to keep trying. Though targeted for the beginner in mind this kit has been loved by experienced spinners as well at our local fiber festival. Border Leicester wool is a soft, medium stapled fiber that is not only easy to spin but creates beautiful yarn. Also, you might consider this as a unique gift for someone who has shown interest in spinning or, perhaps, a grandson or daughter, introducing them to a new art. We are currently working on our YouTube channel where you will be able to learn how to drop spindle along with other things pertaining to our shop. Until then, YouTube is full of great resources to assist you in learning how to use your new kit. The drop spindle is handcrafted by Craig, my husband, who runs The Wood Shoppe here at A Hand Spun Yarn. The fiber comes from a family-owned and run ranch in the Pacific Northwest. Bag color and spindle style may vary.

I never thought I'd become a hand spinner, it just didn't appeal to me much. I guess I thought you needed expensive equipment, access to fleece and it always seemed, well, just a little bit daggy. It all changed for me though during those long hours spent nursing my baby and armed with my iPad. My i

Please get in touch, if you prefer a centre pulled ball instead of a ball or skein. Medium comes in skeins, thin in ball form. HAND SPUN NETTLE YARN ~ available in thin and medium weight, varies naturally in colour between grey and beige. The yarn is slightly uneven in the medium but very smooth and even in the thin version. It be stiff at times and only the finer yarn is suitable for clothing items. sample size: approx. 3m The Company: NETTLE FABRIC ~ Made from Himalayan Nettles, wild harvested in Nepal. This fabric is ethically made in Nepal, by a company that is supporting homemakers, women and families to receive a decent income and to enable them to work from home, rather than finding employment abroad. The Himalayan Nettle: Growing up to 3m tall, the Himalayan Nettle grows abundantly in the mountainous regions of Nepal and is wild harvested. Just like our nettle, it has many uses, including yarn. These nettles are used for making bags, floor mats, rope and clothing. The yarn: Untreated and collected in the wild of the Himalayas, this yarn has been hand harvested and naturally processed using a combination of water and wood ash (lye) to break down the outer fibres of the nettle, before it gets spun by hand in Nepal. The colour of the yarn is natural and varies from light grey/beige to brown brown/beige. Available in hank form only and ethically produced. The last two pictures show the yarn woven. History: Nettle yarn was once used widely in Europe and was known as the 'Poor man's Linen'. Nettles once rivaled flax and hemp (and later, cotton) as a staple fiber for thread and yarn, used to make everything from heavy sailcloth to fine table linen up to the 17th/18th centuries. "In Scotland, I have eaten nettles," said the 18th century poet Thomas Campbell, "I have slept in nettle sheets, and I have dined off a nettle tablecloth. The young and tender nettle is an excellent potherb. The stalks of the old nettle are as good as flax for making cloth. I have heard my mother say that she thought nettle cloth more durable than any other linen." Use: This yarn can be used for knitting, crochet and weaving as well as sewing (thin yarn only). In a nutshell for 100g: approx. 265m medium yarn approx. 380m thin yarn hand spun hand harvested in the wild naturally processed with Wood Ash and water Origin: Himalaya, Nepal Nettle fibre & Fabric is also available Nettle dress is made by Sofia C. woven on a loom using the thin nettle yarn.
