What do you know of the Hartlepool Monkey and the “Monkey Hangers”? I certainly knew nothing of the tale until I stumbled across it. Legend says that a shipwrecked monkey was hanged as …
A monkey is mistaken for a French spy by the people of Hartlepool and hanged - true story or myth?
Hartlepool Monkey Hanger vinyl decal for the back of your car depicting a hanging monkey. Legend has it that during the Napoleonic Wars that a French ship was shipwrecked off the coast of Hartlepool and the only survivor was a Monkey dressed in French Naval uniform. The locals from Hartlepool never having seen a Frenchman or a Monkey before decided it was a spy due to it not answering any questions and hung it on the beach. This car decal/sticker plays upto that legend with the wording a 'Car full of Monkey Hangers' and an image of a monkey being hung. The decal has no background so on the vehicle the body colour will show through. This is an external sticker so can only be placed on the external bodywork or the outside of the glass. Decal is cut out of 5-year high-grade vinyl. Make sure the location you are plying the decal too is clean and dry before fitting Removal is possible with a hairdryer, simply warm the vinyl up and then unpack it using your fingers.
My interpretation of the North East England folk tale of the Hartlepool Monkey. It is said that during the Napoleonic wars, the people of Hartlepool found a live monkey dressed in French navy uniform washed up on the beach. The townsfolk thought the monkey was a French spy and hanged it. The people of Hartlepool are nicknamed ‘monkey hangers’ because of this much loved, though dark, tale. I like to think that the monkey really was a spy.. hence his knowing expression in this piece. Original artwork created by Helen Temperley using technical pen then coloured digitally. The legend of a monkey that was hanged as a spy has inspired not only a football team name, but a successful mayoral campaign.
Facts might be our bread and butter, but separating the wheat from the chaff is no easy feat. When you’ve got so much fake news, different ideological narratives, and fictional stories for the sake of attention floating about, sometimes even real, genuine facts can sound completely made up because they sound absolutely ridiculous. But fact is often stranger than fiction.
I haven't any information on the gun at the moment, but for anyone interested in artillery, the Heugh Battery is next to this lighthouse and is currently being restored.
