In introducing "He Sent His Son" to my Primary Kids, I decided to illustrate the song and introduce the questions and have them think about what they would do if they were Heavenly Father. I cut these prints in half so the question was on the top and the answer is the bottom. I also talked with the Senior Primary kids about and defined the concepts in the song like "tenderness" and "hope". I also made these "Sunbeams" to spotlight all our new little rays of sunshine. I emailed the parents of the new Sunbeams and asked for: 1. name 2. favorite color 3. favorite food 4. favorite game 5. interesting tid bit 6. favorite primary song I wrote this info on the back of each of the sunbeams and read them out to "get to know" our new primary members and get a few wiggle songs in.

We have already learned He Sent His Son and have been singing it for opening exercises a few times, but I am excited to review it, go over a few things and play a fun game with the Questions & Answers that go along with this song! JUNIOR PRIMARY: Would you want to go into the jungle with hungry tigers and darkness and deadly diseases without having a plan? Would you send a friend or family member into this jungle without giving them something to help them? So it is with Heavenly Father. He sent us to earth to learn and grow and be tested to see if we would choose the right. But He knew life on Earth would get dangerous and hard at times. So He sent His son, Jesus Christ to help us, to show us the path and to guide us home. Here is our "knowledge backpack!" inside we have things to visualize parts of the song. The knowledge we have about the Savior will help us always!! "What's the first question?" See if kids can recite first line. Put up flipchart pics as we review the questions and see items to help us remember words. Question: How could the Father Tell the world of love and tenderness? DOLL: He Sent His Son a newborn babe, with peace & holiness. Question: How could the Father show the world the pathway we should go? SENIOR PRIMARY: I must explain that our Senior primary is tiny! One week we had 3 kids and 4 visitors. Our visitors over doubled our primary!! If everyone is there, we have 9 kids. So we used to combine Jr/Sr but now that we are separate I'm excited to do more with the scriptures, ask them deeper questions and play more trivia type games! Instead of doing the backpack full of items, we will dive deeper into the scriptures. So we will sing all the way through one time and have them count how many questions we sang (6) Then I will have them put the questions and corresponding pictures in order. I'll probably give everyone a piece of paper from my flipchart to put it where it goes. Questions are written up/ Answers are GAK pictures. We are singing "He Sent His Song" for the Christmas program this year, so I am going to start teaching the song today. My original idea was to put pictures that correspond with the lines of the song on the board and to have children identify which pictures went to which lines of the song, but apparently, I did that idea last year, ha-ha. I guess certain songs lend themselves to certain ideas. I want to do something different this year, so here's this year's version for learning this song. First, you need a flipchart for this song. If you send me your email address, I'll send you my flip chart, but there are several really great ones online already (this song lends itself to great flip charts). Just do a search for "He Sent His Son flipchart" and you will find a good flipchart within your first five search results. 1. First, play "guess that song." To minimize on prep work this time, I will just have the pianist play the first few notes of the song and ask hands to go up as they recognize the song, until every hand in the room is up. Then, I will ask children to raise both their hands if they want me to call on them to name the song. (Update: I added more "guess that song" clues in a 2013 blog post.) 2. Next, tell the children we are going to play a little game with the pictures for this song, so they need to pay careful attention to how each line of the song is shown in pictures. Put up the song again, but this time show the words for the teachers. Sing it one time through. 3. Before primary, cut out several copies of each picture that correspond to the lines of the song. The quickest way to do this is by opening your flipchart, and then in printer settings selecting to print 4 pages per sheet so that you can print multiple versions at a consistent miniature size. It will print out one page like this, with each pic area about a 4 x 6 in size (these are the first four pics from my flipchart). 4. Tape each picture under a chair so that different children in each class receive different pictures. This makes it fun for them because they get to look for a little surprise. 5. Ask children to listen carefully so they know when to hold up the picture that corresponds to the line of the song. The idea here is that children will listen closely and participate because they want to hear their part of the song and hold up their papers. I tried this with holding up the CTR shield when we learned "Choose the Right," and the kids really paid attention, so I am expecting this to work, from past experience. 6. If there is time, have the children trade pictures with someone nearby them, so that they are now listening for a different line of the song to hold up. Another, easier alternative to the same activity is to give each class the same picture, and teach them their line. This way, the rest of the class hears the line and is "accidentally" learning it, and we'll learn the whole song! I learned the trick about teaching each class one line at a time from my neighbor, Melanie, who has been a primary music teacher. In the following weeks, I will detail this out more, but I plan to continue to include this song in the music/lesson plan and implement: The standard, cover up a picture as you go game, which I have not done in a long time, and works great. Discussing the lyrics of the song, including looking up scriptures that go with each line. I want to find stories about our Savior that have pictures that I can talk to, to help the children remember the significance of the words they are singing. Play He Sent His Song Jeopardy! Divide the Primary into teams Invite two kids up to the buzzers Determine a category chooser (I used the picking sticks to give another child a chance to help). Choose category. Ask question First to buzz gets chance to answer. If they don't get it, the other player gets a chance to answer. Give points to the team of whoever got it right, then sing that Q+A phrase. Repeat I intended to write the name of the song on the board next to the game title. It didn't happen - but was a good thought. Laminated pieces. The categories and questions are taped on and can be removed for future use. Categories and Questions specifically for He Sent His Son: TELL How could the Father TELL the world of love and tenderness? How could the Father TELL the world of sacrifice and death? TELL us what this whole song means [that Jesus lived and died for us!]. (sing last phrase) SHOW How could the Father SHOW the world the pathway we should go? [In JR: SHOW us your favorite action we learned for this song.] (Sing the whole song with the actions) SHOW us where Jesus' hands were pierced when he hung on the cross. (sing the "of sacrifice, of death" Q+A phrase) ASK What does the Father ASK of us? What do the scriptures say? What does he ASK? Who did Heavenly Father ASK to bear the sins of all Mankind [Jesus]. (sing the "pathway we should go" Q+A phrase) *The first 2 questions are taken straight out of the song. When those are figures out, song that Q+A phrase. The red ones are the super hard questions. They're toughies. The part in parentheses suggests which part of the song to sing after those questions are answered. :) ----------------- PREP: Two bells/buzzers Game title Category titles 9 category questions with point value on the back ----------------- UPDATE: As I'd expected, this activity was a little tougher in JR - but with lots and hints and help we made it through. ;) And SR Primary loved it. Sometimes things lean younger or older. This activity leans older, but that doesn't mean it can't be done in JR. Just gotta make it work sometimes. :) In JR I utilized my flip charts for this song (seen in this post). That helped. :) Visuals usually do for JR. Also, everyone in the Primary found out that I can't do math. In fact, math is nowhere near anything I studied in college. At all. DOH.
Learn the song "He Sent His Son by asking questions and getting the answers 'sent' to the Primary. I had someone hidden behind a rolling chalkboard. There was a string that led from them to me (taped to the table). They had numbered tubes ready to be sent to the Primary on my cue. The pictures for the 'answers' in this song were rolled up inside the tubes. I added the pics to the flipcharts as we went along and learned the song. Full lesson typed out below the pictures... These are the hand drawn pictures I added to the text on my flipchart. The 'questions' I put on the charts already, the 'answers' were rolled in the tubes and sent to us. This was the flip chart. The 'question' already had the picture. Once the 'question' was learned well enough, the 'answer' was sent in the tube via the string. **I put the Q's on one color paper and the A's on another. It helped visually. ***I don't always post ALL the words, but for some reason I did on this song. Always number and label everything. :) -------------------------LESSON: SAY: We are going to learn a new song today. Let's listen to it first. ♫ Listen to the Pianist Play through the song ♪ 1 SAY: This song is made up of questions and answers. We are going to ask questions and see if we can get the answers. What we're doing today is kind of like prayer. You can pray to Heavenly Father and he will give you answers. "How could the Father tell the world of love and tenderness?" - Sing a few times and when it's good enough, cue the first answer to be sent. [The answer is attached to a toilet paper tube on a string that is already set up and you have someone in on it to help you out]. Finish the verse, then SAY: We have been sent an answer! Let's see what has been sent to us. Okay.... What were we asking?... (kids answer):"How could the Father tell the world of love and tenderness?".... and the answer to that is (show picture of baby Jesus).... When I put together a flip chart for a primary song, I prefer to be very simplistic with the pictures. I rarely include words, but in this case I felt it could be helpful. The purpose of a flip chart--at least the way I feel about it--is that it should help the children memorize the song rather than make them depend on it. Using straightforward symbols seems to be really effective. I think it helps the kids process everything faster, maybe? Here is the flip chart I drew for my primary. This is the song "He Sent His Son," page 34 in the Children's Songbook. You should be able to right-click and save each of these. How could the Father tell the world of love and tenderness? (One thing that can make these symbols more effective is explaining them as you go; having a mini conversation about it helps the kids remember. In this case, you could explain that the mouth and world always signify the words "tell" and "world." I explained the last picture by asking the children how they feel about babies...tenderness is a natural feeling when we hold babies.) He sent His son a newborn babe with peace and holiness. (I pointed out that the question papers are outlined in orange, the answers in blue. The envelope represents having sent something and is meant to remind the children of the repeated phrase "He sent His son." In this picture, you could explain that the dove with the olive branch is a symbol for peace throughout the Old Testament. I asked the children if they knew what words are on the outside of every temple--"Holiness to the Lord, the House of the Lord") How could the Father show the world the pathway we should go? (This is pretty straightforward. You might want to point out that this time we say "show" instead of "tell.") He sent His son to walk with men on earth that we may know. (Explain that our brains are where we know things, basically, so this symbol is pretty simple to remember.) How could the Father tell the world of sacrifice, of death? (This was a great opportunity for our primary to have a small discussion about sacrifice; try to keep any discussions brief since singing is the main goal, but don't be afraid to bear testimony and let the children bear their testimonies, too. We talked about altars and why they symbolize sacrifice.) He sent His Son to die for us and rise with living breath. (This was yet another sweet opportunity with our primary to reverently point out that even though we do not use the cross as a general symbol of worship in our church, it does remind us that Jesus died for us. But the tomb--the empty tomb--is a reminder that even death had no power over Jesus. "He is risen! He is not here!" The empty tomb is a powerful symbol for me.) What does the Father ask of us? What do the scriptures say? Have faith, have hope, live like His son, help others on their way. (This one might need a little explanation for the children. I reminded them of the scripture and song that say faith is like a little seed. I asked them how they thought the person on the top right of the page seemed to feel--really just to help them notice and think about it--and then with the bottom left picture, I reminded them that Jesus told us to love one another. That's really what that symbol is supposed to represent...I know it could be interpreted a number of ways. Sorry. :) The last one is two hands grasping each other.) What does He ask? Live like His son. (We are splitting this song up between our junior and senior primary. The junior primary sings the questions, the senior primary sings the answers. This last question-answer the primary sings all together.)

BELL CHART for HE SENT HIS SON (p. 34) in the original key, notes C through high D I plan on using this in SR for fun and review of the song. The white letters are for the bells with white handles, and the black letters for the bell with a black handle, to further help the children with the visuals of the chart (especially since there are 3 blue colors!). The last page is for reference to know which bells are used in this song. I plan on standing the bells on top of the sheet of paper in place so I can have the correct ones out and the kids can put them back on the right spot too. Hopefully the layout is not confusing -- I taped sets of two sheets together side by side... If you select "Two Page View" when you open the file you should get what I mean, I hope! The last page is for reference to know which bells are used in this song. I have the 13 note chromatic bell set, but there is one note in this song I don't have (high D) and I'm just going to skip the bell on that one. If you only have the 8 note set you could skip that note and also the Bb (A#). The first counselor in the bishopric taught Senior Singing Time for me last week so that I could attend the annual special Relief Society Visiting Teaching conference. He said the children knew "He Sent His Son" (the song that I wanted them to work on) quite well, so I debated about what to do this Sunday, since I wanted to spend two weeks on this song, without boring the children. We are singing the song during the Christmas program. I wanted to make sure they knew it very well by early November so that we would have plenty of time to sing other Christmas songs for fun. So, this is what I am going to do: In Junior Primary: I will play the game where children pick which words and pictures on the board to cover, until they are singing the entire song from memory. This is a long song, but it should go by fairly quickly, since the children already worked on the song last week. If we have time, we will then move onto using the bells. In Senior Primary: In Senior Primary, I am going straight to the bells. I looked at the song, and it has a nice, easy range that I was able to write onto packing paper that came with something I ordered. I have used bells twice before in Singing Time, once I used the bells for a Father's Day song, and one previous time, though I can't remember the song for my first attempt at using bells. Here's what I've learned about using the bells in a way that the children can follow. This may seem obvious but there are a lot of subtle things I had to learn the hard way, in front of the whole primary. Fortunately, the children offered helpful advice as they were trying to figure it out: 1. Write out the words of the song that correspond to the bells so that children can see their bell AND the words of the song. Use a different color for each bell, or some other distinguishing things for children that may be less advanced with reading, or are dyslexic. 2. When you are singing the song with the class, make sure to point to the bell symbol as you sing, so that the child holding the bell knows when to make their ringing tone. Don't assume they can follow the words and music and keep up. Obviously, you need to sing with them, too. 3. Put the words high up, and use a stick to point. 4. Make sure to remind children that if they play with their bells when it's not their turn, they will have their bell taken away. They need to play only when it is their turn to play. I have had the children come up each time I do this, but I think I will try passing the bells out to the children in their seats. After one try, the children will pass the bell the someone that has not had the opportunity. 5. If I have notes in the song for which I don't have corresponding bells (which happened a few times during this song), I just draw a dash beneath the lyrics. 6. I have the piano play with the bells. It helps the children to know when to sing and to ring the bells, and does not take away from the bells.
