Local friends, come out and join me for a needle-felting class at the Franklin Arts Center. I'll be teaching for The Crossing Arts Alliance, a swell little non-profit (that I happen to work for) located there. We'll be making a puffy little heart brooch and embellishing it with stitches. We'll be working through some of the challenges of sewing on this type of surface, and maybe adding some beads too. If you're interested, visit Crossingarts.org for more information. Last weekend I taught a pincushion class and had a great time. There are a few images from that class on my facebook page. We had a lovely group of ladies and they all did a wonderful, creative job. It feels good to be back in the creative saddle (so to speak). And as I commented to someone on Facebook, being around these wonderful women, creating, is a special kind of salve. I really enjoy teaching, and I'm hoping to do more of it. I'm working on that now, reaching out to groups locally and regionally. Someday, I hope to have my own special space where creative souls can gather, share, learn, and where I can surround myself with wool and happiness, and make a living. It's my dream, and I've plan to say it out loud from time to time so the universe can hear me and I can be reminded towards what I'm working. xo Lisa
Last week there was a lot of noise outdoors : it turned out to be the noise of a chainsaw (which makes me nervous most of the time) Some man were busy on the little island right on the other side of the water next to our garden. I looked in terror : Would they really ? ........ Noooo ! the gorgeous weeping willows In a devastating trapeze act the man were decimating the two trees untill ... there were only two pitiful remnants instead of two majestic trees ( "it will be for the best" the Parks Department will probably say ... yuk !) This tiny creature gave me more fun : Lissotriton vulgaris (a newt) he (or she) was hiding with another sibling and mum under the geraniums (but the picture of the three of them wasn't sharp enough) * And indoors the stitching on the sunny heart piece went on and on ... After all the "sun rays" were there (in rainbow colours) the magic thread was stitched in place. Which left me only with the invisible basting of the backside which I did today ! "A warm heart" will be send of to France tomorrow to a very dear friend (and namesake)
A piece finished a couple of weeks ago. The colours/squares were inspired from a combo of my cats tails stripes (I know, I'm weird!) and the black/white doodling happening around the place. For sale on Etsy.

This is meant to be a craft blog which is why I haven't done a new post for a while. I haven't been doing any craft! However I still managed to make it to the top and near the top of 'Top Blogs by Crafters' so despite my absence there have been visitors clicking through to get me up there. Thank you. I really couldn't do another 'nothing to show' post! There has been an unfortunate incident since my last post. I used to describe our house as 'the house with balls' but not any more. Here they were one snowy day (scroll down) but now they've gone. Nicked, stolen, thieved, lifted, taken....and the same name always comes up in our village and no-one ever does anything about it. Meanwhile I pass a garden every day where there are some cowslip seed heads and have to knock on the door to ask if I may pick one or two. Ah well everyone's different I suppose. Anyway..thanks for all the lovely comments on the last post. I didn't get much replying done as my Mum has been a little unwell.......feeling down after the lovely week in Scarborough, so I've been a bit busy. And we had a lovely family party for Joe's 31st Birthday. A happy time to record here . A whirlwind two hours eating and laughing. Just enough! So..onto the makes. I've had two 'areas' on the go. I had to make some brooches for the wonderful Found Gallery in Dunbar and they asked for some wall pieces as well. During the brooch making I made a mistake with the thread for one brooch..I accidentally picked up this chocolatey-brown-shaded-to-cream instead of a tan and I am in love with the combination. I have also made the nicest brooch I have ever made..I say that again..yes..I love the colours although not an obvious combination and its unrepeatable because I have none of that particular orange left and I'm rubbish at dyeing with accuracy so am unlikely to get it again. This is it. So..some gratuitous brooch pictures to make up for the lack of them recently. (How do I stop white backgrounds looking pink? Yes I know its something to do with white balance but I don't know how to change it if anyone has any ideas with a canon powershot s95 I'd welcome them) Now..I've also used different colours in a new embroidery. I don't know if it works but I thought I'd give them a go. I made the base with pre-felts on a mixed red/orange/cerise background I like how this orange bit in the centre glows. I enjoyed doing it. Its not miniature and its not huge just a nice 7- 8 inch square-ish. I haven't measured..just guessed. I love working on the little hand stitched details. then going back over a few areas with machine stitch. I've got another one in the same colours in the pipeline. I think I'm going to sew them to calico and stretch them over a card mount to keep any 'shipping ' costs low if I sell them. This has been a problem of late. Works which have been stretched onto frames have proved to be too expensive to send overseas with insurance. It didn't used to bother me but since the piece I sent to Australia didn't arrive it bothers me . It will be quiet here for a while. We are going to squeeze in a week in Greece. Symi to be precise. We were a bit stuck for a dog sitter and then my son decided he'd like a holiday in our house here so all will be well. Hetty will have fun with Fin and friends.
Hello my lovelies! It has to be said that I've been a bad blogger over the last couple of weeks with no Pea Pod action at all...sorry!...

All the single ladies getting together to celebrate Galentine's Day? Decorate with this sweet black and wool needle felted pastel pink hoop heart. Or give it as a gift or door prize. Also a sweet Valentine's Day gift for a teacher, daughter, sister, friend, girlfriend, or wife. At 7.5 inches in diameter you can tie it on top of a wrapped package or give it as a gift itself. Hang it on the wall, a mantle, a coat hook, or knob Needle felted by hand in Oklahoma. Needle felting is the process of taking wool and/or other fibers and using special needles with notches to combine the fibers and create a felted textile. This heart is felted on a piece of black blended felt, framed in a wood embroidery hoop, and hangs from a chunky yarn bow. Because of the natural fibers used, color variations are common. This adds to the unique beauty of the piece. Let someone know how much you appreciate them this Valentine's Day by gifting this sweet memento.

Hey, friends! I'm coming to you today with my very favorite fiber arts projects! Teaching fiber arts is one of my very favorite things to teach, along with clay. This summer and fall, I put in HOURS creating THIS BOOK which will be due out this coming summer: You can preorder yourself a copy here if you are interested! But if you just can't wait, I thought I'd share some of my very favorite fibers projects right here today. Be sure and follow the links to the lessons as nearly all of them have how-to videos that are perfect for you and your students. Let's start with sewing! 1. These GIANT pizza pillows were such a hit last year with my students that I knew I had to do it again. Because I was wrapping my fibers book this past fall, I decided to kick off the school year with fibers. Usually, I'm all about fiber projects in the spring. This is how we displayed the pillows at last year's art show! This year, we also made both emoji and donut pillows (size: HUGE) but for details on those, you'll have to scoop up my book. 2. If you are looking for a beginner sewing project on a smaller scale, you might wanna try these stitched monsters on for size. My kids used Smart Fab fabric for the bodies but felt would work just fine. If you are curious what types of needles and thread I recommend, be sure and check out this blog post as well as the others where I break it down for you. 3. I learned embroidery from my grandma when I was in elementary school and I LOVED it. It felt so good to learn something so "adult" in my mind: creating a picture with needle and thread. I love sharing this experience with my students now too. You can read all about this Our School Has Heart fiber art's experience right here. This year, I decided to live dangerously and introduce embroidery to my second graders at the start of the school year...when they are still first graders, really. It was a bumpy start but they got it and loved it. This lesson can be found in my book but I did create this video a while back to help you troubleshoot stitching with kids: Actually, the above video was created for AOE during one of their online conferences! This is a couple years old but does walk you thru a lot of important details of all things fiber arts and kids. And here is my troubleshooting embroidery with kiddos video. I hope you find them helpful! 4. For even MORE details on sewing and embroidery, along with a book I strongly recommend, visit here! 5. Needle felting with kiddos is not something I do very often...but I do enjoy doing it! If you attempt needle felting with children, I'd make certain it's with a group of kids that understand the dangers of the needle felting tool and are responsible enough to handle it. As y'all know, I LOVE needle felting and have put in countless hours stabbing stuff. If you are interested in learning more about needle felting, start here. 6. One of the most popular lessons on this blog has been my string art lesson. This is based on a project I did in 5th grade and LOVED. My students have loved it just as much. I've created videos to walk you and your kids through this lesson so be sure and check out this blog post AND this blog post! 7. Paper weaving is a must when you introduce weaving to your students. But what to do with the paper weaving when finished? Last year, we made these woven owls and the kids loved them! Both this blog post and the one mentioned above have A TON of videos on teaching first graders (and up!) how to make a paper loom and weave. 8. Circle Loom Weaving has always been a huge hit! I normally do with my second graders in the spring but this year, I did it with third grade in the fall. I can't tell you how many videos I have on this! Be sure and check this blog post out if you have any questions about getting started. 9. Have you ever tried CD or Embroidery Hoop weaving? So fun and easy! Last year, my second graders tackled CD weaving instead of plate weaving. It was a great way to upcycle those stacks of CD's I'd been accumulating. This type of weaving takes less time than plate weaving as you don't have to spend two art classes painting the plates. They also look super pretty in the window when light hits the CD. Video and lesson details here! 10. Whenever I get stumped for a lesson, I just think back to the things I enjoyed creating as a kid. I remember the summer I spent at a vacation bible school learning straw weaving. So fun! My kids love this one too. Details and video here! 11. Want a lesson that packs a huge punch? Tree weaving teaches landscape painting, weaving and so much more! This lesson of mine has been another huge hit on my blog. I have many videos to walk you and your kids through this fun technique. You can find it here. 12. I have yet to meet a kid who didn't love making Ojos de Dios. Why not try expanding on that love by making BIG God's eyes?! We did that here! 13. Pouch Weaving used to be one of my all time favorite things to teach. Because it is complex, I created an entire series of weaving videos for you and your students, including how to create that cool cord. You can find the beginning of the series here. 14. Got yarn? Then you and your kiddos can yarn bomb! What a great activity for your early finishers too. 15. Shibori! I love shibori dying and so do my students. I created a video that explains EVERY one of these folding techniques and you can see it here. So, truth be told: I've been blogging for seven years and teaching for twenty. I KNOW I've left some great lesson links and videos off this list accidentally. So, you are wanting more, give my name and whatever type of fiber project you are interested in a google search...or search in the bar on the side of this blog. Because there are just so many fun fibers lessons out there. AND stay tuned for my book where there are even more!
These heart pins are so gorgeous, I just kind of melt when I look at this picture. I don't think I could recreate these exactly, but it would be interesting to see what I end up with if I give it a try! I saw these at Great Green Goods. Apparently they are made by rolling and layering fabrics, then slicing them like polymer clay canes.
Here a few hearts that I have been working on. All of these were made from synthetic felt and cotton floss. In both of these groups I have worked with reverse applique, padded applique and pieced a…
Handmade in Maine, cute needle-felted heart badge. Gold-colored pinback. About 1.5 inches in size. Color variations are listed in the last photo! Please write your choice when you order.
I just finished an order of hearts for The Walker Art Center Shop in Minneapolis and thought I'd share some of the color here. These little niblets are made entirely of wool by needle-felting wool roving. In case you don't know what needle-felting is, I'll give you my version. (because sometimes I live in a craft bubble and assume that everyone knows what needle-felting, roving, mordants, mod-podge, etc. is) So wool fibers are hair, and these hairs have scales on them. Their surfaces are sort of jagged, and when forced against each other, they grab hold and mat together. Whether you're creating felt from roving, using a felting needle to force them together, or fulling a wool sweater, the fibers are essentially doing the same thing, grabbing each other and holding on. Picture two pinecones. If you were to start wiggling those pinecones into each other, their scales would become entwined. That's kind of what the individual wool fibers do. Needle-felting is just the process of forcing these fibers together using a specially-designed barbed needle. I sometimes refer to it as at-home plebotomy. (if you've done it, you know what I'm talking about) Artists use this technique for sculpting, creating "paintings", vessels, and lots of tiny wool hearts. So if you find yourself in the Minneapolis area, stop by The Walker and psst...buy a heart. Happy Tuesday, all.
A basket full of hearts that were finished today, but I still have 1/2 an hour to practice my textures before going to bed! Last night’s sunset.
