Denmark: A Virtual Field Trip/Unit Study Hej! Welcome to Denmark! This is our first stop on our virtual tour of Scandinavia. My children are in lower elementary/preschool and we are galloping the globe this year in our homeschool. I tend to take a Charlotte Mason approach, using many living books to introduce the topic. Here are some of the resources we used to learn about the beautiful land of Denmark. Many are available either free online or through your local library. Enjoy! Non-Fiction Denmark (Blastoff Readers)- this is good, informative book about the country of Denmark and its outlying territories such as Greenland and the Faroes Islands. While this series is more geared towards mid- to late-elementary students, even young children will glean information from the pictures. Denmark (Enchantment of the World)- This provides an overview of Danish geography, history and culture for students in later elementary. It includes beautiful photos. Currently OOP, if you can't find this at your local library consider trying Denmark (Countries of the World). Fiction & Folk Tales Without a doubt, Hans Christian Andersen is Denmark's most famous storyteller. While you can't go wrong with a complete collection of his fairy tales, many compilations of which are available free for kindle, we have this particular collection illustrated by Val Biro left over from our Sonlight days. I had each child pick a favorite story to reread. You could also look for individual tellings of his most famous works. There are many to choose from! The Ugly Duckling- this edition received the Caldecott Honor! The Princess and the Pea- The Little Match Girl The Emperor's New Clothes The Little Mermaid The Snow Queen Thumbelina The Steadfast Tin Soldier The Nightingale In addition to Andersen's tales, here are some picture books that take place in Denmark: The Hat by Jan Brett Hedgie's Surprise by Jan Brett These are two fun little stories involving a little hedgehog named Hedgie. In the first one, Hedgie accidentally gets a stocking stuck on his head and inspires the other animals to also adopt innovative hats. The second story involves Hedgie tricking a Tomten, a figure from Scandinavian folklore. Jan Brett's illustrations are alone worth finding these books. See more information and lesson ideas on Brett's website: The Hat, Hedgie's Surprise. Andrew Lang was a famous folklorist known for his Rainbow Fairy Books. A several of his books contain extensive collections of Danish folk tales. His books are also available in the public domain, see below. Esben and the Witch from The Pink Fairy Book Hans the Mermaid's Son from The Pink Fairy Book I Know What I Have Learned from The Pink Fairy Book Maiden Bright-Eye from the Pink Fairy Book Master and Pupil from the Pink Fairy Book Merry Wives from the Pink Fairy Book Peter Bull from from the Pink Fairy Book Princess in Chest from the Pink Fairy Book Troll's Daughter from the Pink Fairy Book White Dove from the Pink Fairy Book The Ugly Duckling from the Orange Fairy Book Story of the Emperor's New Clothes from the Yellow Fairy Book The Fir-Tree from from the Pink Fairy Book The Flying Trunk from the Pink Fairy Book Goblin and Grocer from the Pink Fairy Book Shirt-Collar from the Pink Fairy Book Snow Man from the Pink Fairy Book Snow Queen from the Pink Fairy Book Magic Book from the Orange Fairy Book Green Knight from the Olive Fairy Book Prince and Princess in the Forest from the Olive Fairy Book Free E-Books Our Little Danish Cousin by Luna May Innes- a public domain book. Some of the information can be outdated, but your children can still get a feel for what life was like in Denmark one hundred years ago. Little Greta of Denmark by Bernadine Bailey-- another free vintage book describing the life of a little girl in Denmark a century ago. You can also find Lang's Fairy Books for free: The Pink Fairy Book The Orange Fairy Book The Yellow Fairy Book The Olive Fairy Book Non-Fiction Movies Countries Around the World- Denmark We are fortunate that our library carries this extensive series. In this episode, we take a tour through the country of Denmark with a young boy who lives there. We visit Copenhagen, Tivoli Gardens and even the home of Hans Christian Andersen. My children love these virtual field trips! Christian & His Drum (available free through Amazon prime) This short film from a series called I Love Music! is about a little boy who wants to play the drum in a jazz band. As we see what Christian's life in Denmark is like, we are introduced to Danish music and culture. My House in Denmark (available free through Amazon prime) Part of another multicultural series by New Dimensions Media, we meet a little boy named Anders who shows us around his house in Copenhagen. Fiction Movies You can find many film adaptations of Andersen's fairy tales. Some are more true to the story than others, but little ones would be thrilled to know the origins of Disney classics such as The Little Mermaid, The Emperor's New Groove, and Frozen or lesser known films such as The Ugly Duckling, Thumbelina, or The Steadfast Tin Soldier Danny Kaye's biopic of Hans Christian Andersen takes some liberties with his life, but still would be entertaining for a family movie night. During our unit on transportation we did lots of math activities. We used unifix cubes to measure these vehicles. You could make this activity more concrete by using toys instead of just measuring…

Hej.
