After nearly a decade of teaching secondary students, I've had a lot of time to test out a variety of 2d art projects. Let's face it: as teachers, sometimes we plan and plan and plan. We are so excited to deliver the project, and then... it flops. Students are uninterested and the final products aren't
Our latest art project includes aspects of 3 major styles of art. Realism - art that depicts objects/people in a realistic way. Abstract - art that depicts objects/people in a semi-form creation Non-Objective - art that does not depict any form, just design and expression. This fantastic lesson can be found on TPT HERE. We chose an object to depict using all three art forms. The item was segmented into three columns and each art form was used in the different column. Middle = Realism Left = Abstract Right = Non-Objective. As usual, I am blown away by the creatively of my kids. They all have done an incredibly job expressing their creative sides!
Many people see art as something with many barriers to entry – maybe the materials are expensive, maybe you don't have the space, or maybe you think it's difficult, requiring many specialized tools. Sometimes that's true, but the artists here have created incredible works using almost nothing but paper and scissors or knives.

Kathy Barbro was one of the first art educators to offer online art resources through her site, Art Project for Kids. No doubt you have seen or purchased her wonderful artist-inspired collaborative murals for your students to color. After speaking with Kathy for the first time in January, I realized there was so much more to
Drill or have drilled two holes in each base. Have students bend off the top part of the hanger. Students then twist the hanger to make an interesting shape. Put hanger in a base. If there is a lot of resistance it is a good idea to change the shape. After hanger is in the base, look at hanger design from all sides. Make sure that hanger does NOT stick out bottom, or it will have to be cut off.
After a decade of teaching high school art, I've recently moved to teaching middle school art. It's a blast and there is truly NEVER a dull moment. Through some trial and error, I've learned that some projects are more engaging than others. Below are some of my favorite middle school art projects that have yielded

The slides were easy to follow and incredibly helpful. The finished projects are truly amazing.” - Chelsea S. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “This is a great resource and a really fun project. The slides are very well done and my students benefitted from the step-by-step instructions, loads of examples, and the practice/planning exercises. I will use this again for sure!”- Caribou Corner of Junction North ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “This is a fave drawing piece of both my students and I. I've used it a couple of times now and have had great success! I saw something similar to this while searching for collage ideas. I used it at the beginning of the year because I wanted to start with something I was pretty sure they could all be successful with - especially for those that have no art background. They were allowed to use an image of their choice. Those that chose to use a photo of themselves were my favorite. It's amazing how much the end result actually looks like them -- even without facial feature details! They shared their image with me via Google Docs or email. I projected the image onto the front whiteboard, they taped up a large piece of cardboard, and traced the important lines and shapes. From there they looked through magazines to try and find the same type of colors and values as in their image. This could be a challenge, but it worked out very well. Some kids worked by themselves, others alone. It took about a week and a half to complete. One of my favorites!!
Students love this simple middle or high school acrylic painting project. It is a great introduction to painting lessons and is easy to follow and teaches how to create tints and shades of paint using no black. They practice mixing colors with acrylic on the included art worksheet then they complete the final painting.
