On this day in 1945, Americans drop an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Nagasaki. It was the second such bombing in a matter of days, following an August 6 bombing of the city of Hiroshima. Japan had been given a chance to surrender, but it had refused. Presumably, no one in Japan really knew what was coming. But you have to wonder whether anyone in America truly understood what was coming, either? Captain William Parsons of the Manhattan Project briefed the crew of the Enola Gay (and others)

This series of photographs was commissioned by the Department of Public Works. As a group they document the construction of the Sydney City Underground Railway and the Sydney Harbour Bridge between 1922 and 1932. Building a bridge to link the city of Sydney with the North Shore was first suggested by Francis Greenway in 1825, however it would be nearly 100 years before the first competitive designs and tenders were finally accepted. In 1921 tenders were finally called and Chief Engineer John J Bradfield oversaw this massive project through to its opening in 1932. The Powerhouse Museum’s collections of photographs provides a good overview of the significant phases of this massive infrastructure project. The photographs are thought to have been printed under the supervision of A. J. Kent, New South Wales Government Printer, between 1923 and 1943. All the original negatives were taken between 1922 and 1932 and while they were taken by different photographers, they were all done under the supervision of Robert Bowden, at the Public Works Department.

Images of life in inner city Manchester and Salford from the 1960s to the 1980s.
Many of the photos featured with history stories online and in the newspaper in 2015 made unshakable impressions.
In Place Vendôme, a woman’s legs, blurred by movement, scissor across a puddle, with the obelisk reflected upside down in the water. In another image, a little boy in shorts with a radiant smile runs home, a baguette under his arm. In a photo from the late 1970s, people are lost in conversation on public phones in the then-new Châtelet-Les Halles metro station, their faces hidden by the curvy cabins—a wry comment, even more so today, on the isolation and anonymity of contemporary life. “I had the vague sensation that I was witnessing the savage meal of a group of carnivorous plants disguised as phones to better deceive human beings,” Ronis commented.
