Mithridates was the name of Kings of Parthia and of Pontus, derived from Mithras, the sun-god. Mithridates II of Parthia (120-88 BC) drove back the Mongols, defeated the King of Armenia, and was the first Parthian King to treat with Rome. Mithridates the Great of Pontus (130-64 BC) three times tried to defeat Rome declaring war on the Romans in 88 BC. Eventually defeated by Pompey after winning notable victories and occupying Greece early in the campaign.
