Stained glass is having a moment, and these spaces show how to do it right.
Modernist architecture has the best public relations managers since the name itself evokes notions like “contemporary” or “current,” while brutalism sounds like a metal band struggling to create an adjective. While quite recent, modernism isn’t defined by being “new,” rather, it’s a design philosophy that celebrates experimentation and rejects rules.
An insider's guide around the different garden quarters of Marrakesh, (including the city's ancient heart—the Medina) Gardens of Marrakesh by Angelica Gray
A well designed living room should have at least one focal point and that focal point should NOT be your television. Focal points are items in a room that are unusual, interesting, eye catching, and/or unique. They are something that you would not find in every other home in your neighborhood. Here are a few ideas for focal points for a living room. ArtworkAn oversized bold piece of artwork can be a focal point. The artwork should grab the attention of people entering the room. You can use one large piece of art or multiple pieces of art used together as one piece. A popular place for a large piece of artwork is hung over a living room sofa or over the living room fireplace. Art with bold colors can not only be the room's focal point, but also set the room's color scheme. A grand ornate or boldly colored mirror can also be a living room focal point. Some people like to use a gallery wall to display smaller pieces of art. A gallery wall can be a living room focal point, as long as the art pieces are clustered together and are visually one art installation instead of spread throughout the room. FurnitureA unique piece of furniture can be a focal point. You can use an ornate antique armoire, an artistic modern chair, a grand piano, or a bold painted chest as a focal point. Some furniture is sculptural and almost like a piece of art. BookcaseA properly decorated bookcase can be a living room focal point. Don't make your bookcase look like a library or book store with all books arranged vertically on the shelves. Arrange some books vertically, some horizontally, and some can even go at a diagonal. Decorate your bookcase not only with books, but with other items of interest. You can decorate your bookcase with art, photo frames, baskets for texture, artifacts from your travels, items from nature, or whatever appeals to you. Don't clutter your bookshelves with a lot of little items, but decorate them with a few larger items instead. FireplaceA fireplace is a very popular focal point in a living room. In order to make it a beautiful focal point, make sure that it is unique and different than a boring builder grade fireplace. You can paint your fireplace wall an accent color to highlight it. You can also replace the cheap tile around your fireplace with something more custom. For an even more grand fireplace, you can tile above and below the fireplace, put wood paneling above the fireplace, or get a unique mantle. Bold Color or PatternA bold color or pattern on an item will make it a focal point. You can have a bold rug, curtains, or pillows. You can even paint an entire wall a bold color, paint a unique pattern on the wall, or create texture on the wall by covering it in brick veneer. LightingAn oversized or unique light fixture can be a focal point. Instead of boring can lights, consider using a chandelier in your living room for added appeal. View OutsideIf you have a large picture window and something beautiful to look at outside, let your view be your focal point. Your outside focal point could be a gorgeous sculptural old tree, a bird bath, a pretty plant, mountains in the background, or whatever you have in your environment. Don't let your interiors compete with nature. Make sure to use simple curtains to draw a person's eye and highlight the view. Consider using outdoor lighting so the view outside is a focal point during the dark of night as well as the daytime. Here are some more living rooms for decorating ideas......
Many home offices are boring, bland, and not really decorated. They often have either large traditional stained wood furniture that is too big for the room and doesn't accommodate technology very well, or cheap discount store wobbly furniture that could topple over at any minute. Electrical and data cords are typically laid across the floor in an unorganized fashion and papers are stacked because there are not filing systems in place. There is no reason for a home office to be sterile and purely utilitarian. Here are a few ways to make your home office more happy. ClutterStart by cleaning up your home office because clutter makes everyone unhappy. Invest in a paper shredder and get rid of outdated paperwork. Find a permanent spot for the items you have to keep. Remove items from your office that belong elsewhere. Create a system for how to purge or file paperwork as it enters your home office. Consider hiding ugly file cabinets in a closet or behind a decorative screen. Either hide your electrial and data cords or go wireless. Find creative ways to hide your router and other technology items. FurniturePurchase furniture that actually works for you and your home office necessities instead of furniture that only looks pretty. You may only need a small table to rest your laptop when it is not on your lap, or you may need a full blown computer workstation to accommodate your 3 monitors, 2 desktop computers, 2 cell phones, headset, landline phone, and a printer. Also make sure that you get a comfortable chair to sit in. If you plan on sitting for long periods of time, choose comfort and ergonomics over aesthetics. Consider purchasing quality commercial grade office furniture from a used office furniture dealer for a great price and professional installation. These dealers buy office furniure from companies that no longer need it, and will make sure that the furniture has been properly cleaned and is in an as-new condition. Make sure to consider getting a sit-stand desk #ad so you are not sitting all day. You might need to have your office furniture custom built to fully utilize a small space or to accommodate your specific needs. It might be custom built freestanding (like a table) or attached to your home (like kitchen cabinets). Make sure to consider electrical and data outlet placement when selecting furniture. Desks floating in the middle of the room often have a problem trying to hide electrial cords. Grommets (holes in the top of the desk for electrical cords to reach an outlet) should be considered. Don't forget to consider modesty when selecting a desk that faces the door. Many desks offer modesty panels that go on the front to partially cover the legs of the person sitting at the desk. Make sure your office is functional before you attempt to make it happy and pretty. ColorNow that everything is in place and functional, we can work on making your home office happy. FIrst, find a starting point to create the happy design for your office. The starting point could be colorful artwork, a fun rug, graphic wallpaper, beautiful curtains, or the fact that you love the color pink. Next, build your overall home office design off of that starting point. You may want to be surrounded by bold color, or maybe you prefer a more serene environment with just a little touch of color. Select complimentary items that coordinate with your starting point item. You can get a colorful decorative pillow, some pretty file boxes, an elegant lamp, or some beautiful curtains. LightingGood lighting is essential for a home office. Natural lighting is best, so let the sunshine in. Having a view out your window will make you happier and let your eyes occasionally rest from staring at a computer screen all day. Most home offices have an overhead light source, but also consider getting a decorative lamp so you can change the light level as needed throughout the day. Also consider replacing your basic overhead light or ceiling fan with something more decorative that compliments your design aesthetic. If you have an overhead cabinet or shelves, consider adding under cabinet lighting so you have plenty of light on your worksurface. TextureAdding texture to your office makes it feel less sterile and more happy. Consider using wicker baskets, textural looking wood elements, shiny items, soft items, glossy items, and mirrored items to add texture. Other SensesConsider your other senses when decorating your happy home office. Do you want music in your office? Would you like an essential oil diffuser #ad so your office smells nice? What about a place for snacks or a small refrigerator to hold beverages? Remind Yourself Why You WorkTo stay happy while working, try to continually remind yourself why you work. Are you working to support your family? Are you working to afford an amazing vacation? Are you working to save for a new home? Surround yourself with items that remind you why you work so hard so you can be happy putting in the long hours. You can decorate with family photos, paintings of far away places, or souveniers from past travels. AccessoriesFinish off your home office design with meaningful accessories. Make sure you don't clutter your home office with cheap mass-produced accessories that just take up space. You can use artwork from your travels, figurines that were a gift from a friend, hard back books, family photos in beautiful frames, and fresh flowers you picked from your garden earlier in the day. Use accessories that are dual purpose, such as decorative glass jars that hold office supplies. The best looking desktop accessories are repurposed decorative items that don't come from the office supply store. Instead of all basic black or silver office products, consider using colored file folders, push pins, binder clips, stapler, and desktop accessories to complete the look of your happy home office.
Your home's accessories are the finishing touch that can elevate any room, whether it's a bedroom, living room, dining room, or kitchen. They add personality to your room, but also add color & texture that brings your entire decor style together. However, it's easy to go overboard and end up with a cluttered & overwhelming look. You must know how to select the best accessories for your home and also how & where to use your accessories in order to create a polished and cohesive look. Here are several interior design tips & tricks to help you master the art of accessorizing and make your home look its best. Stick to a Color SchemeSelect a color scheme for your room to use in your accessories and repeat those colors throughout your room. For example, if your living room has a blue accent wall, you can add blue throw pillows, a blue rug, and blue vases. If your bedroom has a pink color scheme, you can add pink curtains, a pink throw pillow, and a pink rug. Sticking to a color scheme ensures that your accessories work together and look cohesive instead of clashing. Having a cohesive color scheme will make your home's decor look intentional and well designed. Many people like to select a color scheme by selecting a large focal point item (such as a large rug or large piece of art) that has multiple colors in it, then using 3 or more colors in that item to use as the color scheme. Repeat those 3 or more colors throughout your room at least 3 times. You can use a darker and lighter version of those colors also for added depth and dimension. Layer AccessoriesLayering different accessories, especially items from different stores that nobody else has put together, can create a more interesting and unique look. For example, you can layer two different, yet complementary, throw pillows on a sofa or on your bed to add depth and dimension. You can also layer different rugs on top of each other to create a cozy, plush, and inviting feel (which is common if someone likes the colors in one rug, but it is too small for the room, so they put a bigger rug underneath that is the correct size). However, it's essential to not overdo it. Sometimes less is more. You don't want to have to remove 10 pillows off your bed every night before going to sleep! Only use two or three layers at most to avoid overwhelming the look. Don't layer more than 2 rugs else you might create a trip hazard. Mix TexturesMixing accessories of different textures is another way to add a unique touch to your home with interesting contrast. For example, you can add a faux fur throw blanket to a sleek leather sofa or a rough woven basket to a smooth glass coffee table. For an interesting modern look, you can mix an elegant crystal item in front of a rough exposed brick wall. For a unique traditional look, you can put soft velvet upholstery on a worn vintage dining chair. Mixing textures adds tactile interest to your look and creates a cozy, inviting feel. Use Statement PiecesAccessory statement pieces are decor that is bold and/or oversized to stand out and draw attention to become one of the focal points of your room. These statement pieces could be a unique piece of art, a bold rug, an oversized lamp, or a colorful vase. Statement pieces add personality and flair to your home and can be used to create an amazing focal point, but you don't want your room to be filled with too many focal points else it might look overwhelming. Try to aim for your room having at least 1 focal point, however no more than 3 focal points for an average sized room. Pay Attention to ScaleWhen choosing decorative accessories for your home, make sure to pay attention to the scale of your items (how the size of your accessories compare to the other items in the room). This basically means that you need to choose accessories that are the right size for your space, which is not one-size-fits-all. Be aware that many accessories found at cheap accessory stores or big box stores are knock-offs of originals that were a good scale. When the manufacturers make the cheaper accessories, they cut corners in many places, including making the item smaller, so cheaper mass produced items are often too small for most homes. For example, if you have a large living room, you can add a large area rug to anchor the space, however don't try to put a small rug in a large room else it will look weird. If you have a small bedroom, you can add a smaller rug, however a bigger bed requires a bigger rug. See the article Rug Size Guide for a Bedroom for more information. Vary HeightsVarying heights is another way to add interest to your accessories. When adding accessories to a surface, try to use one short, one medium, and one tall item. Do not arrange the items from shortest to tallest or tallest to shortest. Mix up the sizes to create variation. If you want to add height to a shorter accessory, consider stacking decorative books underneath it. You can add more than 3 accessory items, however accessories usually look best in odd number groupings, such as 3, 5, or 7 items together. Varying heights creates visual interest and makes your accessories look intentional and well thought out. Use Natural ElementsUsing natural elements is a great way to add warmth and texture to your home decor. Natural elements can be stained wood or living items. Hardwood floors are extremely popular for adding a natural feel to a room. You can also consider adding luxury vinyl tile floors that look very similar to hardwood floors, but make sure to get the ones that look as much like real hardwood floors as possible. Some of the best ways to add living items to a room is to add a live plant or fresh flowers. Both of these will make a room feel less sterile and more happy. Plus, many plants will actually improve the indoor air quality. Mix in Some Vintage and Antique PiecesMixing in a few vintage and antique accessories with your other new accessories is a great way to create a unique and eclectic one-of-a-kind look. Most home accessories in stores today are produced in enormous quantities that you can often see the same accessories in many people's homes. Using vintage and antique items greatly reduces the chance that any of your friends will have the same items. For example, you can pair a vintage rug with modern furniture, or mix vintage and modern artwork on your walls. You can add an antique vase on top of a contemporary dining table or an antique ink well on a contemporary desk. Antique or vintage books with a fabric cover (instead of the modern day paper covers) are good to use as accessories because they add a richness to the overall feel of a room and are an interesting conversation starter. Using vintage and antique accessories creates a sense of personality and history in your space, and can add interest and depth to your home decor. Edit Your AccessoriesMake sure to edit your accessories regularly and remove any accessories that no longer fit or that are no longer needed. You might choose to do this once a year or every time you purchase something new for your home. Editing your accessories ensures that your home is always looking its best and it also prevents the dreaded clutter from accumulating. If you have accessories that you no longer love, consider selling them or giving them to charity so that someone else can appreciate them. Once they are gone, you might determine that you no longer need any accessory in that space or you might be inspired to put something completely different there. Don't be afraid to experiment by moving your accessories around from room to room instead of just keeping the same items in their original room.

OUR NEW APARTMENT MAKEOVER AND LAUNCH OF DAZEY DEN, MY INTERIOR DESIGN COMPANY Who says you can pursue all your passions? One of the reasons I started Dazey was to get the chance to use all of my creative talents. When I designed for corporate companies I was stuck doing the same thing day in and day out. Since the launch of Dazey I've been able to not only do t-shirt design but also textile design, fashion design, photography, social media marketing, and now interior design! As a creative I see every single one of these things being an important facet to my design aesthetic and brand. My passion for color, abstract art, and vintage doesn't have to end at graphic tees. It originally all started with Biz Babez, the boutique female co-working space I co-founded about 2 years ago. For the first time ever I had an inspiring space and a budget to decorate. It turned out way cooler than I could have ever imagined and even got a feature on my fav interior blog The Jungalow. About 6 months later I ended up buying my first home, Dazey Desert House, a Mid Century Modern beauty in Palm Springs that we use as a vacation home and rent out for photoshoots and Airbnb. We went all out and created a really special place and people took notice. We got featured on Domino Magazine, Dwell, Conde Naste Traveler, and Palm Springs Life. It ended up being a way better investment than we thought it was going to be and generates a decent passive income. After a year of visiting our home in the desert it started to make our small LA apartment feel lack luster. We were craving a space to entertain friends and spend time outdoors. With photoshoots being a decent money marker at our PS property we thought it would be really cool to do the same with a full-time place in LA. We searched high and low for the right spot with little luck, until we came upon this stunner, The Dazeywood Penthouse, which hadn't even been fully listed yet. Better yet the landlord was on board for us doing shoots in the space! A 2,000 square feet penthouse of a Spanish style triplex located in beautiful Beachwood Canyon, right under the Hollywood Sign (Hence Dazeywood). Complete with a giant living room, dining room, kitchen, 3 bedrooms, and 3 patios. It was honestly more space than what we really needed, but it was comparably priced to all the spaces half the size that we looked at. Plus we figured we would be renting it out for shoots sometimes and it's good to have variety. Well, fast forward to a few months and right as we try to start renting out the place for shoots our neighbors swiftly shut it down. It was a pretty hard blow that Phillip and I were not expecting as we took on the significantly higher rent. But we had the space of our dreams fully decked out, so we decided we were determined to make this work. I've decided to look on the bright side and use this space as my springboard to finally launch my interior design career. Something I've always wanted to do but thought I couldn't add into my life along with Dazey LA. But you know what, I'M GOING FOR IT! I would like to introduce to you Dazey Den (haha yes same name as the home goods section of our site), my new interior design business. With my now 3 different spaces I felt prepared to put together a solid portfolio and launch DAZEYDEN.COM. I am officially open for biz and will be taking on select projects. Contact me via my new site for a quote! Below is our full home tour complete with
