By Jeeheon Cho from Surat Thani, Thailand - Varanasi River BankUploaded by Ekabhishek, CC BY 2.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=10681661 Here is a fascinating and touching story about Varanasi, the most sacred place for devout Hindus. One of the things that makes it so sacred is that it is a destination for many dying Hindus who believe that they can only reach moksha, or freedom from the cycle of rebirth, by taking God's name and dying in the holy city. Moni Basu, a practicing Hindu and a reporter for CNN, follows an 80 year old Hindu who wants to take his last breath in the city of Varanasi. That city is what Basu calls the "epicenter" of Hinduism. It is to Hindus what Mecca is to Muslims and what Jerusalem is to Christians. But unlike those cities, Varanasi is a destination for many dying Hindus. Basu explains why dying in Varanasi is so important. And she introduces us to Mukti Bhavan, a "liberation" house where some Hindus spend their eleventh hour. Basu calls it "Hotel Death." There, she tells us, she saw death in a "new light." The house lacked warmth, love, or "any other emotions we linked to the process of dying." But later in the story, we see the house through the eyes of its manager, Bhairavnath Shukla. For him, death is not to be mourned. In fact, he sees it as mukti, or liberation. According to Basu "he and everyone else at Mukti Bhavan see death in Varanasi as a marriage of one's soul with God?" Basu's story helps us to understand Hindu spirituality and the significance of Varanasi in sustaining it. Does the Hindu view of the afterlife differ from other religions. Basu included a chart of those views which you can see below.
Between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, in the area of modern-day Iraq, the Babylonian, Assyrian, Akkadian, and Sumerian civilizations all together formed ancient Mesopotamia. Their mythologies differ a little bit, but mostly share the same stories. This is an area of the first known human civilizations, dating to nearly 5,000 BC. It is where three of the major world religions - Christianity, Islam, and Judaism - began. The story of human creation begins with people coming from the mother goddess Mami. They were created to lighten the gods' workload, and were made of clay, flesh, and the blood of a slain god. Much later, the god Enlil tries to control their population through famine, flood, and drought. They are saved, though, by Atrahasis, who built a boat to escape the great flood. This is similar to the Christian story of Noah and his ark. Another story that is similar to one in Christianity is the story of Adapa. He was a very intelligent Sumerian who made the south wind mad. When called forth to be judged for his actions, he was tricked by An, who offered him the food of immortality. He had been warned not to eat or drink anything before his judgment, and so he turned down the offer. Because of this, he never became immortal and all men had to stay mortal. It is the explanation for man's mortality. The original book for this post was The Golden Bull. When City of the Plague God was released as part of the Rick Riordan presents series, it was updated. Both books make a good base for the study of Mesopotamian mythology. If you are very interested in this subject, you may want to explore our high school curriculum Empires of the Ancient Near East. Access the complete unit study in the World Mythology Unit Studies Bundle! Includes sixteen unit studies covering world mythologies. Each unit addresses a new topic, spanning ancient through modern history. Each unit has introductory text, which will give the student basic background information about the topic at hand. There are photographs and illustrations, and we have also included primary documents when available. After this text, there are featured videos, which augment the background information and help make the topic more accessible for more visual students. You will also find a short list of reading books, including a featured novel that the unit builds upon. There are vocabulary words, places, and people to identify. Reading comprehension, critical thinking questions, and writing assignments are included. We add fun with hands-on activities and extra videos to watch that will bring the era to life. Product sample: Percy Jackson & Greek Mythology These studies are directed toward upper grades students, but some have resources for younger students so that the whole family can work together. Our family has used unit studies as curriculum for many years, and we hope that your family will enjoy these, too!

atheist blog atheist blog atheist blog atheist blog atheist blog atheist blog atheist blog atheist blog atheist blog atheist blog OK, so I love Pinterest and I love photo editing. Combined, they are the perfect storm for my late night moments of angsty atheism and meme making. You see, often I find myself so frustrated with the state of the country, this conservative and Christian country in which I live. I get frustrated with the good people of this country buying the codswallop that is so very divisive. I am angry and frustrated with this fractious nation. Two sides, moving further and further apart. No bridge in sight. The distance that some Christians and other believers have to go in order to maintain both their beliefs and to maintain the stranglehold of power in the places of authority is staggering. Facts, reality, and evidence are actually suspect in this country that worships faith over knowledge. I sometimes feel as though I am living in a George Orwell novel or in a Twilight Zone episode. We have a powerful political party in the United States that seems to reward blind loyalty, classism, racism, sexism, corporations over human beings, theocracy, reduction of personal freedom, the 1%, outright hatred of anyone different from wealthy and white, and overall extremism. How can so many adults in this country that I love support this??? What must a human being think to support this? Anyway, in my small way, I am spreading my love of true freedom out there through my memes. I have created dozens of atheist and freethought memes that can usually be found on Pinterest. I'm posting a few here, just in case you haven't seen them. Many of the following memes are a single example from a series of posts that all have a similar appearance. If you go to Pinterest and look for atheist parent or atheist memes you will definitely start finding my stuff. ...are wrong. Too Much?

Each year as I teach about the Sacraments, I try to gauge the needs and interests of my students and create activities that are right for them. This year after learning more about the Eucharist, I set up a review week with four tasks related to the Mass. I made four activity sheets to guide their reflections and help me assess their learning. The sheets are all linked below and could be used with a wide range of ages and specific activities. I intentionally did not include written instructions so that I (and you!) could tailor them to individual kids, groups, and tasks. Here are the ways I used these sheets this year: Mass Articles These Mass sets, which really are designed for younger learners, were actually incredibly helpful for my students as they learned the proper names and uses of items that they see in the church. After reviewing our resources on things used in the Mass, they had to choose four of them that they learned something new about, draw their own picture and then write their own description, helping me gauge their understanding. The Order of the Mass This page was used to review the four main parts in the Order of the Mass. I labeled the Introductory Rites, Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of the Eucharist, and Concluding Rites. The students had to draw something that illustrated the main action of that part of the Mass as well as write a description. Using these Order of the Mass Cards in earlier lessons definitely helped my students know how the parts of the Mass fit together. For younger students or if using this as an introduction, you could have the students copy a "definition" for that part of the Mass and then draw their own illustrations. Mass Book Review The next page was an opportunity to read and review a book about the Mass. I set out a basket of books (including the kids' books from this list) and they had the chance to read, analyze, and recommend the book they chose. Mass Reflection Aaaaand disappointingly, I can't find any photos of the fourth page, which was a Mass Reflection. It has a space for a large illustration and many lines of writing. I had prepped my students before a school Mass to pay attention for a moment when they felt particularly close to Jesus. They drew their own pictures of that moment and then wrote a couple of paragraphs about it. You could use that page in many other ways. including writing about the homily, the readings, a particular prayer of the Mass, why Mass matters to them, etc. I happened to have a stack of leftover posters from a Eucharist centered retreat, and was able to trim them down and use as covers for a book about the Mass that my students then added to their Fulton Sheen Notebooks. (Waste not, want not, right?) Click on any of the images below to get the four Mass Activity Pages: Updated: Here's a matching version but with the text in manuscript instead of cursive: P.S.- This is unrelated, but I just had to share: I've posted several times here on the blog about the new Catholic Journaling Bible (the list of posts is here) and I also started an Etsy shop earlier this year with stamps and stickers to use in Bibles, planners, journals, or anywhere you want to bring a little bit of your faith. This week I finished a project that had been in my head for a while, and am so, so happy with how they turned out. These Stained Glass Biblical Ladies Stickers are based on windows found in the Lady Chapel of St. Mary Cathedral in Peoria, IL. I have them both as line art that you can color yourself and as a watercolor set that is ready to print. I added them to my Bible, and just love them. They're in my Etsy shop now if you'd like to have a set for yourself! P.P.S.- Make sure to check back next week for a revival of the Why Make Beautiful Things Series! Monday through Thursday will feature guest posts on the topic of beauty, why it matters, and how it points to our Creator, and Friday I'll be hosting a HUGE giveaway with over $200 worth of prizes. You don't want to miss it!
