Ancient Rome - Daily Life Tessa learned all about the daily life of the Ancient Romans, including the importance of Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius, gladiators and aqueducts. Monday Read Usborne: Ancient World by Fiona Chandler (pages 84-87). Completed Evan-Moor History Pockets: Ancient Civilizations, Grades 1-3 "Ancient Rome -Roman Puppets" and "Triumphal Arch" (or eBook). Tessa drew a picture of her driving a chariot for her "Triumphal Arch" project. She was so proud of it that she asked me to take a picture of it to post on our blog. Tuesday Read The Romans: Life in Ancient Rome by Liz Sonneborn. Watched Ancient Civilizations for Children: Ancient Rome DVD by Schlessinger Media. Wednesday Read Pompeii: Lost and Found by Mary Pope Osborne. Listened to Magic Tree House #13: Vacation Under the Volcano audiobook by Mary Pope Osborne. Thursday Read Gladiators by Michael Martin. Friday Completed "Ancient Rome: Vesuvius Erupts" (pages 10-11) from Look, Find & Learn: World History by Jerry Tiritilli. Completed "It's All Downhill: Build An Aqueduct" (page 155-156) from Classical Kids: An Activity Guide to Life in Ancient Greece and Rome by Laurie Carlson. To create a model of a Roman aqueduct, Tessa first cut a paper towel tube in half, taped it together at the ends and then covered it with aluminum foil (to waterproof it). Then, she built a series of sloping archways with wooden blocks. After setting the aqueduct on top of the arches, it was ready to test. And, test she did! Over and over again. I liked this project because Tessa was able to complete it with very little help from me. Tessa greatly enjoyed this simple project. She tested her Roman aqueduct many times. * HO = History Odyssey

This week's science theme was on the circulatory system. Water beads are our kids favorite; this hands-on blood activity didn't disapoint! Red Water Beads = Red Blood Cells (that carry oxygen) Ping Pong Balls = White Blood Cells (that fight germs, bacteria, and viruses) Blue Snap Beads = Platelets (that help heal cuts) Water = Plasma (helps the blood move through veins and arteries) The kids enjoyed playing Body Bingo! It was fun to see how different their reactions to winning were. Kensley let out a quiet, "Oh my stars" while Nolan about jumped out of his chair screaming! For history we covered the Missouri Compromise. Slavery is such a sad, horrible thing. Even activities with candy and comics doesn't sweeten up the sad reality of the lives those people lived. V. I. C. T. O. R. Y. This, my friends, is what victory looks like for our family with the tin whistle for fine arts. Last year, Kensley struggled to tolerate the different sounds with ear plugs in. This year, you can see a smile eeeeking out! Nope, we aren't focusing a lot on the instrument but rather more on the music theory. That's the advantage of homeschooling.
