The hornbills (Bucerotidae) are a family of bird found in tropical and subtropical Africa, Asia and Melanesia. They are characterized by a long, down-curved bill which is frequently brightly colored and sometimes has a casque on the upper mandible. Both the common English and the scientific name of the family refer to the shape of the bill, "buceros" being "cow horn" in Greek. Hornbills have a two-lobed kidney. They are the only birds in which the first and second neck vertebrae (the atlas and axis respectively) are fused together; this probably provides a more stable platform for carrying the bill. The family is omnivorous, feeding on fruit and small animals. They are monogamous breeders nesting in natural cavities in trees and sometimes cliffs. A number of species of hornbill are threatened with extinction, mostly insular species with small ranges. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cat owners already know that their pets will range as far and wide as they can manage, but what is truly confusing is when one encounters a cat that isn’t even theirs.

Beinn Alligin, Scotland It has been a magnificent 3 days of hiking here in Torridon. Earlier today, I went up the ridgeline of Beinn Alligin and from near the high point of Sgurr Mor, this view of the 3 horns of Beinn Alligin and the horns of Beinn Dearg in the background were prominent. Passing light helped motivate me to take pictures and unpack the camera gear in the wind and cold. Not a walk to be taken lightly (with alot of gear anyway) but highly highly recommended!

Racka Sheep is a unique breed with both ewes and rams possessing long spiral shaped horns. The breed comes from Hungary and is used for milk and wool. Mature males may have horns as long as two feet or more. The cork-screw horns protrude almost straight upward from the top of the head. They look old and wise, don't they? via PS -- I watched the new PBS series The Durrells in Corfu last night and LOVED it.
