The former South Western Hotel, Canute Road, Southampton. Completed in 1872 by John Norton for the London & South Western Railway, it served as the hotel for the adjacent Southampton Terminus station. The hotel was used by countless passengers awaiting their voyage by ocean liner from Southampton Docks, including the passengers of the ill-fated "Titanic" in 1912. (The buildings close proximity to the dock warranted an image of it appearing as a ‘backdrop’ in the James Cameron film, Titanic.) The building played host to many distinguished guests. Two very notable ones were Winston Churchill and Dwight Eisenhower during the Second World War. The men planned the D-Day invasion in a small public room on the first floor. After the War it became the home to Cunard and BBC TV South/Radio Solent until 1991. More recently the upper floors were re-developed into 94 luxury apartments and penthouses. The remaining ground floor space has been developed into 15 Studio Apartments and Restaurant. www.grand-cafe.co.uk/history
