Wildlife Photo of the Day - March 25, 2015: Macro photography is one of my favourite kinds of photography. I was very pleased to get the photo of this hoverfly when it landed on a flower as they so rarely land for more than a second.
Lesser Hornet Hoverfly [Volucella Inanis]
Are aphids and other insects destroying your plants? Don't spray pesticides—instead, invite good garden bugs to your property to feast on the bad ones.
Flies in the Diptera family Syrphidae are commonly known as hoverflies, flower flies, or Syrphid flies. As their common names suggest, they are often seen hovering or nectaring at flowers; the adults of many species feed mainly on nectar and pollen, while the larvae (maggots) eat a wide range of foods. In some species, the larvae are saprotrophs, eating decaying plant and animal matter in the soil or in ponds and streams. In other species, the larvae are insectivores and prey on aphids, thrips, and other plant-sucking insects. The great advantage in having a Hartley greenhouse is stealing a march on time. It may be a chilly outside, with a biting easterly wind, but it's always

The hoverfly is an important pollinator that mimics bees and wasps. Although they look like bees, they are actually flies. Their larvae are also important aphid predators.

The most complete photographic field guide to hoverflies of Britain and North-west Europe ever written. An essential part of our eco-systems, hoverflies are the second most important pollinators after bees but sadly, more than a third of all European species are now under threat of extinction. Written by two leading experts, Hoverflies of Britain and North-west Europe is the first and only photographic field guide to cover all 400 hoverfly species occurring in Britain and neighbouring countries in such detail. Each species account contains a description, population status, ecology and habitat, an up-to-date map of its distribution across North-western Europe, a flight time diagram and guidance on differentiating similar species. There are also detailed illustrations and stunning full-colour macro photographs in each account, showing key features of the species to aid accurate identification. This is the ultimate photographic field guide to hoverflies, and a perfect introduction into the world of these important pollinators, both for amateur and expert entomologists alike.

Hoverflies, or syrphid flies, are beneficial insects that feed on nectar and pollen as adults, on aphids and other small insects when larvae
We will soar to new heights through macrophotography of flying insects. Macrophotography will allow us to view details of flying insects that we would not otherwise be able to observe. You will see the delicate veining in their wings, the hairs on their bodies, their wondrous compound eyes and many other interesting aspects of these insects.
It looks like it's macro week! This tiny guy is rubbing his 'hands' together, I wonder why fly's do that?
