It is one of those rare fall days where the air smells sweet and there is a light breeze ruffling the leaves in the trees. It is almost warm enough for just a t-shirt, and the sun is shining so bright that you have to squint in order to see. I am about to go take advantage of the beautiful Wisconsin weather by going for a run outside, but before I do, I thought I'd share a few of my favorite anchor charts that Samantha and I have put up in our classroom over the last couple of weeks: We just finished administering the Benchmark Assessment to all of our students who are not "Z readers" at the middle school level. Once testing was complete, our students were grouped homogeneously according to their highest instructional benchmark level, and guided reading has officially begun. These were the norms that my students agreed upon for guided reading. We established norms for students in the guided reading group for the day and also for the rest of the class while the teacher is working with the small group of guided reading students. My 8th grade students and I have been discussing the impact of using simple, compound, and complex sentences in our writing by noticing what authors do while reading, trying it out in writing, and understanding the different types of sentences during our word study block through using mentor sentences. We actually have an area in our classroom where we keep all of the anchors about the "grammar stuff" for quick reference. Another hot topic for us has been comma usage. The anchor charts with the comma principles and color-coded coordinating sentences are below. With that, I'm off to breathe in some fresh autumn air and work up a good sweat. Our staff is in the middle of our "Biggest Loser" competition, and I've been trying to exercise at least five days a week!

The class watched an exciting movie about a castle adventure. But now the students need help recalling the details of the film.
Writing children’s literature is kind of like comedy. Everyone thinks it’s easy when, in reality, it’s actually much harder than it looks. Perhaps it’s the lower page count or the simplified language, or the popular belief that kids will be satisfied with any form of entertainment – no matter how superficial. Waggle some bright objects

Are you looking for ways to encourage your students to show feelings in their writing instead of just telling them? This writing unit includes everything you need to teach your students about the importance of showing feelings in their writing. Included in this unit are: *Writing Ideas List: Feelings- This brainstorming list allows students to gather ideas for their stories by thinking of times when they felt a certain way *Feelings Charades- This activity is so FUN! Volunteers in your class will act out different feelings while the rest of the class records the body language/actions that they notice. This game helps students understand how to "show not tell" in their writing. This game includes 6 feelings cards and a recording sheet. *Showing Feelings Chart- This chart can be used as a resource in your students' writing notebooks/binders. Twelve different feelings are described so that your students can reference the chart when writing. *Changing Telling to Showing- Four different practice pages allow your students to practice changing a telling sentence into a showing sentence or paragraph. I included four different sentences so that you can use these whole group, in partners, or independently. *Showing vs. Telling with Patricia Polacco- This activity includes feeling cards that will be passed out to students. While reading different Patricia Polacco books throughout the unit, students will raise the feeling card they were assigned if they hear it in the story. Also included are charts for The Junkyard Wonders, For the Love of Autumn, and Chicken Sunday with specific page numbers and quotes from the text where a feeling has to be inferred. *Inferring Characters' Feelings- Once students understand how to infer feelings and how to show them in their writing, this independent practice page allows them to record quotes from a text while reading and the feeling they inferred. You can use this in guided reading groups, during reading workshop, or as an assessment to see if your students understand how to infer feelings. Please let me know if you have any questions about this unit! Be sure to download the product preview for more views of the contents!

This is a gallery walk assignment for Beowulf that requires students to view and write about images related to the text. A gallery walk is an activity that requires students to circulate around the room while thoughtfully observing and analyzing visual content. I have included two websites within the product that feature different images related to Beowulf and Anglo Saxon art. In the included directions, I specify how you should select five images for students to perform a gallery walk with. Note that I also included a website link on the assignment itself in case you want students to select their own images, independently, to analyze. PLEASE NOTE THAT SPECIFIC IMAGES ARE NOT INCLUDED WITH THIS PRODUCT. INSTEAD, THIS PRODUCT PROVIDES LINK(S) TO RESOURCES THAT FEATURE A NUMBER OF IMAGES YOU CAN CHOOSE FROM. I ENCOURAGE YOU TO ACCESS THE LINKED RESOURCES VIA THE PRODUCT PREVIEW BEFORE YOU BUY. -During the exercise, students walk around the room in silence and view each Beowulf-related image; as they view, they respond to the questions on the handout, which require them to reflect, write, and make connections to the text. This activity can be followed up with paired and/or whole class discussion or extended writing. I have included directions and a two page handout/graphic organizer. -Need other resources for Beowulf and British lit.? I am SO excited to share this product with you! I'm passionate about the RACE and RACES response for writing and close reading, and have expanded my RACE poster to include more user-friendly options for your students! Why Use RACE/RACES? Understanding (and memorizing!) this acronym prepares students for writing responses on standardized tests. Students learn not only to write complete responses, but to read CLOSELY...because they know they will have to "prove" their answer. Beyond tests (and isn't that what it's all about!?), this helps students truly back up their answers with evidence from the text! We are teaching students to think critically and support their opinions! This product includes: * Four 8.5x11 posters of RACE and RACES (neon and black/white versions) * A BIGGER, BETTER, poster set of one-letter per page. Perfect for reading from across the room :) * Cute RACE/RACES acronym bookmarks * Leveled response worksheets. There are three different worksheets depending on how much support you want to give students with RACE/RACES 1) Gives students each RACE word with a sentence prompt 2) Gives students only the RACE word 3) Gives students only the RACE/RACES letter (they will need to remember what each letter stands for!) Do your students fill their writing with fluff phrases that add no value to their content? Phrases such as: In my opinion I believe I'm going to tell you about This is why I wrote about This Don’t Write About Your Writing mini-lesson helps students drop these empty phrases and improve the actual content of their writing by leaps and bounds! The scaffolded notes and worksheets build differentiation into this lesson so it is ready for use in inclusive classrooms. This mini-lesson takes 20-ish minutes. Students enjoy it, they laugh at the examples of what not to do, and their writing immediately improves. Rarely do I see them revert back to meaningless "fluff" phrases, and if I do see it, a simple “Don’t write about your writing” is the only reminder they need to erase those meaningless phrases and create writing that is stronger and more effective. THIS WRITING MINI-LESSON RESOURCE INCLUDES: The lesson, in 2-column note format (including 15 “empty phrases” and how and why to avoid them) 2 pages of examples, showing students how writing progresses from weaker to stronger when these empty phrases are removed 2 student worksheets that allow students to immediately practice this skill A classroom poster that can utilized to remind students about this skill throughout the entire school year A bonus mini-lesson on how and why to correctly space writing (essential if your students are putting too much space between their words to make it appear that they have written more than they actually have) Learning Objectives, Teaching Tips, Common Core State Standards, Terms of Use SHARING IS CARING! Muckraker Research Project This is a partner research activity where students become modern day “muckraker” journalists like those of the late 1800s/ early 1900s. The student mission is to investigate a problem that currently exists and is causing damage or harm to some sector of modern-day society. The problem may occur across the US, but the students must look specifically at the local impact of said problem. Students will conduct 2 or more interviews with people who have an opinion on the issue. These interviews can be done in person, via email, over the phone, or through an online venue and will be transcribed. ● The format of the project can be a. A podcast for possible downloading b. A written article for possible publication in a local newspaper c. A website that concerned citizens might visit to learn more about your issue, or how to get further involved in it ● Recommended Project Assignment Time: a. US History classes could do this project after being introduced to the muckrakers of the Progressive Era. b. AP US History classes could do the project at the same time or after the AP test as a current event project to wrap up the school year. File Includes: ● Teacher Instructions ● Project Description ● Project Scoring Guide (Rubric) ● Email Template for students to use to contact potential interview subjects ● A detailed project outline ● Student project planning page ● A detailed list of possible muckraking topics to choose from *All items are editable Materials Needed: ● Computers for online research ● Copies of the various handouts

Theme might be the most difficult concept for ELA students of all ages to understand. This visual guide to theme presents the concept of theme for students in a way that they can easily comprehend and remember. You can print it off for their notebooks or learning stations, post it in the room, or place it on your classroom page. In addition, there are teaching tips that I have used successfully in my classroom to help students strategically understand theme including: writing theme statements - practice determining the topic of a text and constructing a theme from that topic theme research - researching common themes in literature and how authors address them. This builds literacy about theme and gives them a toolbox to draw from when investigating themes in works. A quick word about the terminology used in this resource. I know that some teachers say that a "theme" has to be a complete sentence. While I agree with this idea, I have called a statement of theme in a complete sentence a "theme statement." My reasoning for doing so is because many discussions about "universal themes" revolve around single words, like "love" and "friendship" because many statements about these topics, as they relate to specific works of literature, are not universally applicable to EVERY text that addresses that topic. Furthermore, a lot of websites that students might come across online use the term "theme" as words or phrases. In order to cut down the confusion, I have presented it the way that I have.
