Inspired by the iconic Louis Poulsen AJ Table Lamp, the Louis Poulsen AJ Mini Table Lamp has all the features you know and love from the original, just slightly more miniature. The new AJ Mini Table Lamp is a great option for smaller spaces, such as a children's bedroom, an entryway or atop a bedside table. Arne Jacobsen designed the original AJ Table Lamps in 1957 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen where they constituted an integral part of the design concept of the hotel as a whole. Louis Poulsen's AJ Table lamp has since become a world-famous design icon and one of Arne Jacobsen’s most popular lamps. Arne Jacobsen was an aesthete to his fingertips, and it is no accident that he was often given responsibility for the interiors of the buildings he designed – right down to the smallest detail. He originally dreamed of being an artist before choosing to train as an architect, and his artistic talent and courage clearly shine through in both his unique design idiom and his sense of color. The design of the Louis Poulsen AJ Table Lamp and AJ Mini Table Lamp are based on a shade whose shape comprises two geometric shapes: the cylinder (the socket) and the cone (the shade). The lamp shade concentrates the light where it is needed, and the design is ideal for use as both a work light and a reading lamp. The unusual angles of the AJ lamps, along with the volume of the shade and the circular hole in the foot, imbue it with a pronounced sculptural quality. Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971) is one of Denmark’s most famous and renowned architects and designers. He embraced all areas of his profession and succeeded in capturing international trends and making them his own. Arne Jacobsen is recognized as being the great architect of modernism. He was remarkably productive, and over a period of approximately 50 years he created more than 300 works encompassing all genres of the art of construction. Arne Jacobsen designed numerous buildings in Denmark, Germany and the UK, with the National Bank and SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen (1971/60) and St Catherine’s College in Oxford (1963) among his best-known projects. Sculptural in its own right, the Charcoal Sculpture Pedestal series are left to age as they find their form with deep grooves and movement in the grain. The piece, made of solid Douglas Fir wood, is then treated with the shou-sugi-ban application of burning the first few layers of wood and finished with a clear matte seal. As this is a solid piece of timber, it will continue to expand, breathing into its new environment showing variations in color as it moves, exposing the natural wood beneath the finish. The Medium and Short heights are photographed together in these spaces. Please note, this product is final sale.
Handcrafted from oyster-cut fragments of salvaged Mexican ash and sustainably harvested European ash burl. A hand-applied, reactive finish highlights the natural beauty and tonality of the wood. An acrylic lacquer is then applied for added protection. Oyster-cut wood may display cracks and other organic features, including scorch marks, water stains, and natural graining, that will not affect the quality or performance of your piece. Bases are crafted from steel panels left out in the elements to weather, developing a rich patina of dimples and speckles as they age. This collection is artisan-crafted from natural materials with hand-applied finishes. Individual pieces may vary in color, pattern, shape, and texture, making each truly unique.
