An illustrated poem I wrote a short while ago about all of the people I daydream about being when it feels too overwhelming to be myself. Featuring Hozier, the film version of Matilda, and a light touch of cannibalism. This zine has eight pages, as well as a hand designed cover and illustrations. The zine is A6 and measures 105 x 148 millimeters or 4.13 x 5.83 inches. *International orders usually take three weeks, but may take up to six weeks from dispatch, and this is sadly out of my control but please let me know before ordering if you need your order delivered faster, or if you want tracking to be added to your order (extra shipping costs may apply). Every Friday I will be posting some sort of crafty project that I have completed in the past. It could be anything from baking, to sewing, needlecrafts art, decorating, etc. This was the first project I made after Phoebe was born. I went two months without any sewing while I adjusted to motherhood, sleepless nights, and everything else that goes along with becoming a first time parent. My parents came up for the weekend to spend time with their new grandaughter and I pretty much locked myself in my studio for the day, save for feeding the baby every couple of hours. I finished the entire thing - embroidery and all - that day. It felt amazing to be sewing again. This book is still a big hit, and I'm proud to say that Phoebe does know all of her colors. Tutorial is from here. I added an extra page to include a couple of extra colors.

Since the moment I knew my sister was going to write a book, I knew I was going to throw her a big party. Book pages seemed to be the obvious choice for decor. I wanted the decorations to be fantastic. And I remembered what Henri says.. So I purposely limited myself to books and paper. And anything I could find around the house was fair game to join in the fun with a supporting role. Here’s the breakdown of the money I spent on decorations–not including fresh flowers $4 :: roll of craft paper $6 :: bag of long glue sticks {never buy the short ones, you {I} have to keep loading them too often and it’s annoying, also, don’t buy the blueish sticks–make sure they are VERY clear or else your glue will have a blueish hue. $3 :: extra books from the thrift store–I liked their cover color and thought I might use those for something, I didn’t $1.29 :: extra tall hard back book from the thrift store with old fashioned typing–it looked like an old syllabus and I used it for the long pages on the book page wreath $4 :: straw wreath from Micheal’s […]

This is the chair that my sister, Katja, made for the Call for Painted Chairs at our Midsummer Arts Festival on Bay St. She impressed photos of an American gold finch that visited her yard onto an old oak chair found in the attic of the Finnish Labour Temple. Gold skeleton leaves for accent. The chair sits at the top of the stairs to the Hall. a whimsical garden chair that evokes a summertime mood! The Finnish Canadian Historical Society painted and donated this chair. You can see their pamphlet on The Finnish Experience taped onto the chair. The FCHS is a local group that has been busy documenting and archiving Finnish Canadian experiences and history. Below, the poem "Midsummer" by Einari Vuorela that Kylliki Emily Parkkari read in Finnish at our festival on Sunday; I read it in English [find my translation below]. The poem is from an old book published in 1947 that I found a few years back at a rummage sale at the Finlandia hall. The book is called Suomen Suvi: Runoja ja valokuvia keväästä Syksyyn [Finland's Summer: Poems and photographs from spring to Autumn]. Juhannus ~ Einari Vuorela 1889-1972 On valon juhla, juhannus, on lehtimajain aika on herkimmillään kauneus, on kirkkaimmillaan ruskotus, yön varjoo pyhä taika. Ui vettä parvet venheitten käy saariin nuorten saatto. Soi laulu riemumielinen ja kokot palaa roihuten. On mittumaarin aatto. Koi* ajaa kultavaunuissaan yön äärtä, taivaan rantaa. Soi laulurastas nummellaan ja käki kukkuu kaihojaan, Maan pellot tähkää kantaa. This image is from the Suomen Suvi book and is found on the facing page, beside Vuorela's poem. Each page of the book has a poem on one side with a photograph to illustrate it on the facing page. This pretty white and rose chair sat in front of the entrance to our local Finnish newspaper, The Canadan Sanomat. If you click on this week's online version [vol 8 # 25] you can read their article (in the Finnish language) on our Midsummer Festival. Written by Anna Kaisa Kontinaho, it's called Taide, musiikki ja suomalainen pulla tekivät Clubin juhannuksen [Art, music and Finnish sweetbread brought Midsummer to the Club] This humorous child's time-out chair was part of a boy/girl set. It got a lot of attention and bids!!! This pale yellow child's rocker embossed with leaves and a children's rhyme was another favorite that caused a bidding war! This chair also caused a mad scrabble of bids at closing! Suspended from its seat, and replacing some back rungs, are beautiful multi-coloured glass sun catchers. This old oak chair from the attic of the Finnish Labour Temple brought the top bid: $100. It was painted by Kaija Maki in such a fashion as to leave the old patina of the wood visible. Below is my English translation of Einari Vuorela's poem. [on the website devoted to him, read his seasonal poems. Lovely!...of course, you must know Finnish to read them!] To keep the feel of Vuorela's poem on Midsummer, I was liberal with my metaphors. If you read Finnish, please send me any suggestions in comparing the original Finnish and my rough translation. Midsummer by Einari Vuorela 1899-1972 The celebration of light, Midsummer is the time when leaves create a sheltering sanctuary. Soul-stirring beautiful, Midsummer is a brilliant twilight, an evening lit with sacred magic. Rowboats cleave the waters as the young head off to celebrate on islands. Songs ring out joyfully and bonfires blaze brightly. It’s Midsummer Eve. Dusk* drives its golden chariot around the edges of the evening, along the shores of heaven. On the heath, the song thrush sings her heart out while the cuckoo calls out wistfully. The fields of earth bear kernels. A sunshiny summer field of flowers rocker a delightful doily design One of my favourites, a wolf tracks chair made by who else but the folks at the Wolf Tracks Anishnawbe shop on Bay Street! The women at Bay Credit Union crafted a seat full of change! And to Finnish off ;-) the vintage Oshkosh nursery rocker I podged with the red lentävä lohikäärme [dragon] print napkins that I bought at the tori [market] of Finnfest in Marquette, Michigan in 2005. That year, I went to present a poetic narrative on how the past informs the present. I called it Tietäjän Takki .... The Shaman's Coat. * koi is both dusk and moth, which makes for an interesting image for the last stanza. A moth, koi, circling the dusk, koi [from koite]. Or is the dusk a moth?
Hi All! Today I want to share with you my entries for the My Favorite Things - You Could Be a Card Design Superstar Contest - 2016! I almost missed the boat on this one, as I just heard about the contest last week! Wish I had more time to come up with another card (three is the maximum you can enter). But I guess two will have to do! Well... what do you think of my first card? How cute is this little guy!? I love how using a clear acetate on the bottom of the card makes it really look like a speech bubble ;) I will link a list of the supplies I used below this post, but here is a list of the specific Spectrum Noir Markers I used (FS3, FS6, TN3, TN5, IG1 and the Blender). Here is what the inside looks like. I used adhesive black foam for my letters to add some texture and dimension. It's clean, it's simple, it's fun... and that's what I was going for. I'm pretty happy with it since I feel like I'm still a newbie at this whole card making craft! Plus, it was easy enough that I'm going to make a few more to have on hand for birthday's that I have coming up soon! And onto my second card... In contrast to the first card this one is a lot darker and actually a little gloomy. Here is a close up of the glitter fun foam clouds and the distressed sky. It gets a bit lighter and hopeful on the inside of the card. I think this is the perfect card this card to brighten up someone's day! Hope you've enjoyed my entries to My Favorite Things - You Could Be a Card Design Superstar Contest. Wish me luck, and if anyone one out there still has time today you should enter as well or at least take a peek at some of the entries (they are AMAZING) and very inspirational! Thanks for stopping by! Happy Crafting :) SUPPLIES To make supplies easy to find, I have linked them below. If something I used is no longer available I will link to a similar product. This Repurposing/Recycling Project is a wonderful way to celebrate Earth Day. However, I have included more than one version of the documents so that you could have your students create this project at any time of the year. This assignment could be completed in school, but I sent it home and gave students two weeks to work on it. You may choose to do this any way that suits you and your students.Students will take an item that they would normally throw away and repurpose it to be a new, useful item. In my classroom, we used a gallon water jug. Throughout this explanation, I will use the water jug as my example. Please know that this project is adaptable for any recyclable item you choose to have your students use. You could even have students choose their own item. This resource is created in a way that leaves room for choice and creativity. And of course, some writing!I don’t know about you, but I go through gallons of water jugs! I began to collect these because we did not have a plastic recycling system. For this project, I gave each of my students a jug. As a class, we created this assignment. I displayed the large quantity of gallon jugs for my students and explained how horribly I felt just throwing them away or even just recycling them! It seemed as though they could have another purpose in their life!As a class we brainstormed a list. I included some of the ideas on the assignment sheet to help students choose a project. Prepare to be amazed at what your students will produce!Students begin the project by sketching a picture and listing all of the materials they will need to complete the project. Once they have made their project, students will list out the directions, and complete a written procedural text explaining How-To make their new and improved product. There are three ways, you might have your students complete the writing project.How-To Book How-To Article/ReportNewspaper Ad for the ProductI hope you and your students enjoy this project as much as we did!
