The Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC) Centre, completed in 1976, is a prime example of mid-career work by renowned architect I.M. Pei. This International Style tower, once the tallest in Singapore, reflects Pei’s admiration for Le Corbusier and other 20th-century cultural figures. Originally, the design included bronze sculptures by Henry Moore and Tan Teng Kee at the entrance plaza, though these have since been relocated. The OCBC Centre remains a retail banking hub, nicknamed “the calculator” for its button-grid-like windows. The interior features granite and marble finishes, the largest seamless carpet in Singapore, and a ceiling with 36 massive coffers. Beneath the main hall lies an underground strong room and vault network, ensuring asset security.
