Continuing our epic journey towards Shakespeare's 400th death anniversary on Saturday, here is a handy-dandy board game that allows you to relive all the exciting ups and downs of this master playwright's eventful life!
The king of British literature can be celebrated any time of the year, but we tend to teach our Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales unit around the winter months. We bring in the sarcasm, irony, and parody, and satire with some Saturday Night Live clips along with some in-class performances . Are you looking for new and exciting ways to celebrate one of the best literary masterpieces of all time? Introducing The Canterbury Tales' activities into your classroom will make for a fun and memorable unit. Even though it was written during he medieval time period, Chaucer's work is timeless and humorous in nature. Students will love how their teacher will guide them along the pilgrimage to Thomas Becket's shrine into their ELA classroom.

To Stop The Train is an easy round for children to learn. It can be found on page 280 of Arvida Steen's "Exploring Orff: A Teacher's Guide." Arvida suggests adding movement to visually enhance the round, although she doesn't describe any specific gestures. Dr. Robert Amchin, head of the music education department at the University of Louisville, has often included this round in his classes and workshops. In the video below, you can see Dr. Amchin first teaching the movements of the round then adding the words one phrase at a time. Last, he introduces the pitches. To create harmony, he allows the class to become the first group while he sneaks in as the second part of the round. He gradually adds people to group 2 until both groups are equal. This year, my fellow music teachers and I decided to have our students perform this simple round in our Central Area Music Festival. But, we knew we had to make the round longer and more interesting. First, we started in unison with movements only and no voices. We added one phrase at a time until we sang the entire song in unison. Then, we sang the song one time through in a 4-part round starting 4 beats apart. Last, we sang the song one time through in an 8-part round starting 2 beats apart. Here is the video of our performance. These are the elementary choir students from 3 neighboring schools. All of the students really enjoyed this round; it quickly became a favorite! For weeks, I would walk through the hallways or lunchroom and hear someone singing or humming it. Whether you are just performing it in class or you are polishing it for a performance, I hope you and your students enjoy this round.

Pair Work exercise useful for practising speaking and listening skills and giving/following instructions. Put students in pairs and give each half of the worksheet. Student B tells student B where to go on the grid and what to write or draw. Make students can not see each other´s sheet. This ws allows the whole class to practise simultaneously. At the end of the exercise, Ss should compare their answers to the teacher´s answer sheet. Enjoy. - ESL worksheets
Here are my interactive notebook pages and some teaching ideas for "Angles Formed By Secants and Tangents" in a circle. First, we went over each theorem on the pink sheet and highlighted each theorem and explained what it meant. If you are a regular reader, I think I'm going to make a poster of all of my "left side" circle theorems and hang them up around my classroom! After going over each theorem, we started on the following foldable that has practice problems. I found that cutting out two strips of paper and positioning them around the angle helps my ESL/SPED students visualize the arcs and angles better. They were able to see the relationship between the arc measure and the angle. (Highlighting is also a very big help!) After we finished the foldable, students worked on a simple maze review over this topic. Thank you for taking the time to read! Only 5 more school days left for me :) Here are some files that I used in this lesson: Angles Formed by Secants and Tangents Foldable Secants and Tangents Theorems

We are well underway into the school year! Lots of great things have been going on in my classroom. My 7th grade band is to die for! 65 students and perfectly balanced with a low brass section that is huge! I have four tubas in my 6th grade bands (2 tubas per band) and the 8th graders are adapting well to our funky split class schedule-22 minutes, lunch, 22 minutes. Not ideal, but we will manage. I have started working on my first goal per my last post which is to implement e-folios. I am using our district Google account and Google Drive to accomplish this. I created a mailing list with my students' emails and sent them a "practice email" requesting them to respond to me to make sure they got the email. Later this week, we will head up to the learning center (aka media center) and our learning center specialist will work with the students to make sure they understand how use Drive-downloading assignments, uploading assignments and making sure the students share with only me. Google Drive is pretty slick. I have created folders for each band, and within those folders subfolders for each students which will contain their online assignments that I will share with them, so it will be more organized than just a bunch of emails coming at me from my students. The 7th and 8th graders have an assignment that they will complete and send me in the next week. Typically I do this during class, but we will test this out to see how it works. I am hoping that there won't be too many complications. SMARTER goals are an extension of SMART goals. Specific, Measurable, Actions, Realistic, Time frame, Enjoyable, Resources. By no means am I taking credit for any of this! I believe many schools are implementing SMART goals, but we wanted to add on to this. Many students, and adults, find goal making to be tedious and often associated to something that is not enjoyable. So, we decided to put a spin onto it so that students realize that goal setting is important and the process as well as the product can be enjoyable. This is what my students will be completing, sharing with me and storing in their Google Drive folder. So, we will see how this goes. I am hoping that this will be beneficial to the students, as well as myself. A side benefit will be less paperwork and passing back. Just a few clicks of the button and away we go!

I've written about Teaching Channel before, and I'll be writing from time to time about a particular great idea I've found there. If you haven't already joined, remember that it's FREE, and signing up takes less than a minute! One of the many great Tch video clips shows middle school teacher Meagan Berkowitz teaching a poetry lesson using the SIFT Method - Symbol, Imagery, Figurative Language, and Tone or Theme. It's less than 5 minutes long, and well worth watching to see her interaction with her students, and the focus they have on the poems they are reading while using bookmark cue cards. Close analytic reading is an important feature of the Common Core; here's a tool for you to try out to see if it fits your needs! Besides the bookmark, you are given the lesson plan, a copy of the two poems used, and a transcript of the lesson. If you're a language arts teacher, you're all set to try this lesson yourself, or to adapt it to your grade level! And don't forget to "pin" the lesson by clicking "Save this in my Lesson Planner." (A note: there is a typo on the SIFT bookmark that you'll want to change before printing - "attitude and author" should be "attitude an author." I changed it in the image above. Since it's an open Word document, it's no problem!)
