For this Jacob & Esau lesson, I set up areas in the classroom and we acted out the lesson. I used the tent that is always up for 'Isaac' to sit in. I set up cooking utensils, the fire and pot for Jacob, then 'Rebekah to cook. I brought a crock pot of meat cooked to add to the sensory part of the lesson. I had a scroll for Jacob and a bow and arrows for Esau. Also, I made arm and neck coverings for 'Jacob' to wear. Most of these are items that I have used for probably 20 years! Review: Last week we learned about Abraham’s servant traveling to another country to find Isaac a wife. He found her by a well. Rebekah had gone there to get water and when she offered Abraham's servant water and enough for his camels, he knew that Rebekah was the right woman for Isaac. Rebekah was also very beautiful. Abraham's servant went to Rebekah's house and told her brother, Laban and her mother why he was there. Abraham's servant gave Rebekah gold and silver jewelry, and he gave clothes and gifts to her family. Rebekah left her home with Abraham's servant to be with Isaac and they saw Isaac while he was in the field. Rebekah put on her veil to cover her face. Isaac was 40 when he married Rebekah and he loved her. Abraham lived 175 years. Today's lesson is found in Genesis 25:24-34 & chapter 27. Isaac and Rebekah didn't have a baby for 20 years, and then they had twins! They didn’t look alike at all. The first baby was all hairy and red and they called him Esau which means red. Then his brother was born. They named him Jacob. Jacob means ‘holder of the heel.’ Isaac was 60 when they were born. God told Rebekah that even though Jacob was the younger son, he would have the birthright. ** Usually, the older son received the birthright. A birthright in Bible times was a custom that the oldest received 2 different blessings. The things that you have around you, like money, land, food and animals were given to the oldest twice as much as the other children the father has. The firstborn was also considered head of the family. The other part of the blessing, being the oldest, meant he offered the sacrifices and taught the family about God. Eventually, these men were ancestors to Jesus. The boys grew up and Esau was a skillful hunter. He liked to be outside. He was a big strong man with hair all over him. Isaac loved Esau the most. But Jacob liked to stay inside in the tent. And Rebekah love Jacob the most because he was a gentle man and stayed in the tents. One day Jacob cooked a stew and when Esau came in from the field, he was so hungry and tired, Esau asked Jacob for some of the stew. Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright and you can have some.” Esau replied to Jacob “Well, I’m so hungry I’m about to die anyway, so why not?” Jacob gave Esau bread and stew, and then Esau was sorry that he had made the trade. (Genesis 27:1) Years later Isaac was sick and couldn’t see well. Isaac called the oldest son, Esau in to see him. Isaac was also very rich and didn’t think he was going to live much longer. Isaac told Esau "Go hunt a deer and cook it for me as I like it and bring it to me." Rebekah heard this and told Jacob. She told Jacob to get two goats and she would cook them for Isaac how he liked it. After the meat was cooked, Rebekah put clothing on Jacob and fur from a goat on his hands and neck to make him hairy like his brother Esau. Rebekah wanted Jacob to fool Isaac! So, that is what Jacob did. Jacob told Isaac that he was his brother, Esau. When Isaac asked Jacob how he found the meat so fast, Jacob replied that God put it there for him. Isaac said, “Come over here and let me feel you to see if you are Esau.” Isaac said, “You sound like Jacob, but feel like Esau.” Isaac ate the meat and gave the blessing to Jacob that should have gone to the firstborn son, Esau. As soon as Isaac was done with the blessing, Esau came in from hunting and took the food in to Isaac. Isaac said “I have already eaten and given the blessing. Your brother came in and deceived me.” Esau was so angry with Jacob; Esau said he would kill Jacob. Rebekah heard about this and sent Jacob to her brother’s house to keep Jacob safe until Esau wasn’t so angry. You can print this worksheet that I made for this lesson. These Jacob and Esau Printables are aimed at children in kindergarten and preschool and includes over 100 pages of fun and learning.
This week I am blogging all of my Simply Sunday School lessons that we have been learning this fall in my Sunday school class. My last post was about The Tower of Babel and Abraham, the next two lessons we learned about were Jacob and Esau and then Joseph and His Coat of Many Colors. Here's what we did. The story of Jacob and Esau can be found in Genesis 25:19 through Genesis 33, I told a simplified version of this story that told about Jacob and Esau being the children of Isaac and Rebekah, and then the story of how Esau sold his birthright for a bowl of lentil stew and bread, and how Jacob dressed up like Esau to receive Issac's blessing. For snack time we had Lentil soup, so my students could taste something similar to the Lentil Stew in our Story. For ease of transportation and preparation I chose to bring canned soup, I don't buy much canned soup, as I love making my own, but I have always enjoyed Progresso's Lentil Soup. I served it in heat proof cups, with soft Hawaiian Rolls, which the students really loved. I was happily surprised how all of my students tried the soup and really enjoyed it, knowing how kids' tastes can sometimes be, I was not sure what they would think about this soup, but most of them ate it right up, and thought it was a fun snack time. For our craft we made take home story cards. I traced a soup pot shape onto black construction paper, and cut out enough for each student. I also printed out Genesis 25:34 (see below) and pre-cut that out. Onto orange textured cardstock, about a quarter of a page, we glued the soup pot and verse on the card using glue stick, then with regular white Elmer's School Glue, we added glue to the top of the soup pot and glued on real dried Lentils. I started the craft at the beginning of class, right after our story, so the lentils would have time to dry a bit before class ended. Overall a fun lesson! :) The story of Joseph and His Coat of Many colors can be found in Genesis Chapter 37 and goes to about chapter 47. I told a simplified version based on these chapters, who Joseph was, about his brothers, and how he was Jacob's favorite and his father gifting him with his colorful coat. About Joseph and his dreams, and his brothers being jealous and selling Joseph, how Joseph ended up in Egypt and eventually held a high position for the pharaoh, and prepared for a famine, and eventually years later reconnected with his family. Since there is so much to the story of Joseph, rather than reading it straight from the Bible, you could read it from your favorite children's Bible, or learn the story and tell a simplified version. For our craft I thought water colors would be a fun way to decorate Joseph's coat. I folded a 12 x12 sheet of white cardstock into quarters, and traced a simple coat shape onto it, then cut out all of the coat shapes. Before we painted I had the children draw stripes with white, silver, or any very light colored crayon, to act as a guide for the water colors. Then we set the coat shape on a plain sheet of white paper to protect the table, and painted colorful coats. Watercolors are always a hit in my class, and each coat turned out unique and very colorful. We set them out to dry, and worked on some Joseph worksheets and had our snack. So that ends what we did in our Sunday school class during September and October. This November we are spending the whole month learning about Moses, then on to our lessons leading up to Christmas. 1) Welcome: 2) Songs: Start the Story Hour with the learning our names song. Go around the circle or table and introduce each child. If you are the musical type, you may want to learn this song and teach it to the children! Click here to listen. The full lyrics and score are available at http://www.gardenofpraise.com/ http://gardenofpraise.com/audiofiles/jacosong-1.wma Here is a neat song to help us learn the names of Jacob's sons: Sons of Jacob (to the tune of "Ten Little Indians") Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher, Joseph, Benjamin - These are the sons of Jacob. 3) Prayer: Ask God to use our weaknesses to show how strong HE is! 4) Theme: Remind the children of the theme of the unit: God works among his covenant people to prepare the world for the Savior. Hebrews 12:1&2 “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us… look to Jesus.” Tell them that they are going to hear a Bible Story again today that shows how God works through two brothers, Jacob and Esau. God uses the brother’s strengths as well as their weaknesses to show God’s power and might. 5) Bible Story: Today’s Story is about Jacob and Esau. Read pages 50-62 from the Read and Learn Bible (Scholastic). 6) Text: Today’s Text is: The Lord said to Rebekah, “and two peoples, born of you, shall be divided; The one shall be stronger than the other, The elder shall serve the younger.” Genesis 25:23 7) Craft: Birthright Sold for a bowl of Soup- Clay Craft. Prepare “air dry” clay ahead of time, if you wish, or use plasticine. Make enough so that each child can make a small pot. Bring a small round cup and a rolling pin to cut out standard size bases for all the pots. You may wish to prepare a sample a few days ahead of time. At craft time, help the children roll a flat section and cut out bases for each child. Divide remaining dough into even lumps for each child and demonstrate how to roll a “snake” in your hands. Coil the length of clay around the base of the pot to make an old fashioned soup pot. Clay will dry after it has gone home. Send home “pots” in a Styrofoam bowl/plate with today’s text attached to it. If you like, you could even give the children some red lentils to put in their pots! We have tried this with a variety of different "clays" and find that plasticine (even the inexpensive kind that you can buy at a dollar store) is the easiest for kids to work with and provides the most satisfying results. Same and Different….cut out the shape of a man (2 for each child and have them glue one one side of a piece of construction paper. Have the children decorate the shapes with crayons, markers and scraps of fabric to show how the two brothers are same and different. Provide scraps of fake fur if possible! Write “Esau” and “Jacob” on the two sides of each child’s sheet. If you have time, also write down a few words to describe each brother using the child’s ideas. 8) Closing Prayer: say the Lord's Prayer together with the children. 9) Going Home: Sing the closing together. Then, check to see if all the children have collected their crafts and coloring sheets before they go home. Say goodbye and tell them that you enjoyed learning about God together and were happy to have them today! You were, weren’t you? Closing song: (sung to the tune of The More we Get Together, just like the opening song) We love to learn together, Together, together We love to learn together And give thanks to God. Also can be sung with: “sing” or “pray” or “work” 10) Optional Coloring Pages (available for free at http://www.dltk-bible.com/)

Jacob & Esau is lesson 8 in the first quarter of a year of Preschool Bible Study that I assist with on Wednesday evening. Last week we learned about Abraham’s servant traveling to another country to find a wife for Isaac. He found her by a well. Rebekah had gone there to get water and when she offered him water and enough for his camels, he knew that she was the woman God had chosen for Isaac. Rebekah left her home and married Isaac. Our lesson continues in the book of Genesis (25-27). There are two parts of the Bible. The Old and New Testament. Genesis is the first book of the Old Testament. After waiting a long time (20 years) to have a baby, Isaac and Rebekah had twins! They didn’t look alike. The first baby was all hairy and red and they called him Esau. They named the second baby Jacob. The boys grew up and Esau was a very good hunter. He liked to be outside. Esau was a big strong man with hair all over him. But Jacob liked to stay inside in the tent. Isaac loved Esau the best, and Rebekah love Jacob the best because he was a gentle man and stayed in the tents. One day Jacob cooked a stew and when Esau came in from the field, he was so hungry and tired, so he asked Jacob for some of it. Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright and you can have some.” Well, Esau said “Well, I’m so hungry I’m about to die anyway, so why not?” Jacob gave him bread and stew, and then Esau was sorry that he had made the trade. Esau had given up a very special and valuable item to Jacob. Years later, Isaac was sick and couldn’t see well. He called Esau in to see him. Isaac told Esau to go hunt a deer, cook it and bring it to him. Rebekah cooked goats and put fur on Jacob’s hands and neck to make him hairy like Esau. She wanted Jacob to fool Isaac! And, that is what he did! Jacob told Isaac that he was his brother, Esau. Isaac said, “Come over here and let me feel you to see if you are Esau.” He said “You sound like Jacob, but feel like Esau.” Isaac ate the meat and gave the blessing to Jacob that should have gone to Esau. Esau went to see Isaac. Isaac told him that he had been tricked by Jacob and already given the blessing to him. Esau was so angry with Jacob! Rebekah sent Jacob to live with her brother to keep him safe. This is the visuals I set up for hands on fun. Depending on your students, you can make a stew and/or meat for a small treat for the lesson. I went to Pinterest to find a project for this lesson because I was in the middle of so many things and just couldn't think of something I liked for preschool. So, this is a twist from the original idea found at Sunday School Crafts. (Please click here to see the original.) They didn't have the graphics to print for the soup, so they are included here. I also added Jacob & Esau finger puppets. This is in color and black & white. These are glued on a paper plate, but if you don't have them, cut a circle to glue them on. Click here to download. Click here to download the lesson. Click here to download the updated visuals. This file contains visuals for Genesis 25-27. All are not shown. Click here to download the pictures to color. (These are the same as the visuals but are black & white.) Click here to see the Jacob & Esau lesson & printables for early elementary. Genesis 25:19-34 We chose to divide this lesson into two separate binder projects, although we studied the entire lesson at the same time. The first binder project emphasizes that, although they were twins, Jacob and Esau had very little in common. This project is courtesy of http://homeschooling.about.com with the original website found here and the downloadable version found here. The second binder project emphasizes Esau's disregard for his birthright, which also came with spiritual responsibilities for which he had little interest. This project is courtesy of http://www.sermons4kids.com with the original website found here. You can also download the worksheet here, although it is important to note that we did not include the word bank at the bottom of the original. Our activity was inspired by the game Feed the Kitty by Gamewright (see the picture below courtesy of Amazon.com.) First we had the children cut out the die template as seen in the picture below and downloadable here, then we helped them tape it into a cube (tape works much better and easier than glue.) We distributed 40 uncooked pasta shells to each child to represent Jacob's stew, leaving 40 in the middle of the table as a discard pile. Everyone plays at the same time, rolling their single die and performing the activity shown on the face of the die. The 'NO' sign (line through the circle) means you do nothing--like a 'resting space.' The hand means you give a pasta shell to any other player--simply dump it in their pile of pasta. The empty bowl means you ate your stew so give a shell to the discard pile. The soup in the bowl means you were given a refill so take a shell from the discard pile. Play continues until one person is completely out of pasta shells, but that person must call out before another player hands them a pasta shell or play continues. The original websites for the clipart used in the die is found at the end of this blog. Dice Template Soup Empty Bowl Hand
