Are you looking for a fun and effective way to teach idioms? Are you looking for quick idiom activities that allow autonomous learning? If so, this idioms worksheet and activity resource is just for you! There are hundreds of idioms in the English language, so I decided to group them into different categories. Also, it is overwhelming to introduce too many idioms at one go, both to home language speakers and EFL/ESL students. Therefore, each of the groups has only ten idioms. This particular group focuses on Animal Idioms. To start, students are asked to match an idiom with a meaning. The thought and consideration in this process create more awareness of the idiom, and this helps the student to remember it. The next step is to use the idioms in a sentence. This activity requires the students to fill gaps in sentences with the correct idiom, changing verbs or pronouns in the idiom as required. Finally, the students can re-inforce their idiom learning by playing a memory game with the cards provided. Preparing and cutting these cards is the only 'work' you need to do as the teacher! Answer sheets to both the idiom matching and the gap-fill sentences are included, encouraging learners to work on their own. These idiom worksheets are perfect for quick lessons, bellringers, morning activities, or sub days. Once you have a collection of cards (see below for the other idiom resources) you can create game 'stations' around the classroom where students can be exposed to many different idioms over and over again in a fun way. ⚡️ The Importance of Learning Idioms: Idioms are important for both natural English speakers and those learning it as a foreign language. It helps them to speak more naturally (particulary the ESL and EFL students) and students have a higher level of understanding of reading comprehensions and other forms of communication if they understand idioms. Benefits for you, the teacher! ♥️ ♥️ ♥️ ♥️ Ready-made lesson plan saves hours of preparation! Additionally, you will have happy students who learn important idioms in a relaxed and fun way.
