This is the Giant Microbes Original Pneumonia and this little beauty can literally take your breath away.FACTS: Pneumonia is a lung infection in which the small, air-exchanging sacs of the lungs (called alveoli) become inflamed and filled with fluid. It can come on suddenly and in serious cases it can take your breath away. There are a number of causes of pneumonia, ranging from viruses to fungi to parasites to physical injury – though being caught in the rain without your coat is not among them. However, the most common cause of bacterial pneumonia infection is Streptococcus pneumoniae. As the ringleader of a gang of more than 80 Pneumococcus bacteria, Streptococcus pneumoniae is such a common cause of pneumonia that a pneumonia vaccine has been developed to keep it (and 23 other of the worst kinds of Pneumococcus bacteria) at bay.The vaccine is recommended for those most susceptible to pneumonia infection, such as the elderly and those with respiratory diseases, weakened immune systems, or chronic illnesses. In addition, because pneumonia often occurs as a complication of influenza infection (or the flu), flu shots are also recommended for those at risk for pneumonia. However, unlike flu shots, one dose of the pneumonia vaccine provides long-term protection against the disease, though a follow-up dose is recommended in certain cases. If you’re at risk for pneumonia, don’t hold your breath. Take precautions, and breathe a sigh of relief.
A parasite is an organism that attaches itself to a host, often leeching food and nutrients at the expense of its host. Parasitic architecture emulates that relationship with structures sitting on top of, underneath, or alongside existing structures, relying on its host for support and resources.

The child would put that in the parasitism category. - Answer Key for the flashcards, most are self-explanatory, but just in case :) - 3 labels for the categories (parasitism, mutualism, commensalism) - Symbiosis Cheat Sheet (a simplified version of the definitions of each relationship) - and of course, instructions for the activity :) After learning about symbiosis, this is a great activity to wrap up their knowledge of parasitism, commensalism, and mutualism. This is a flashcard sort activity. It is made to be done in small groups. You have the option of giving your students the provided “Symbiosis Cheat Sheet” to use for the activity. Each group will have 3 labels (parasitism, mutualism, and commensalism) and a set of 36 flashcards which have various scenarios containing a symbiotic relationship on them. Their job is to sort the cards into the correctly labeled category. If you need to use this activity for an assessment, you can print the flashcards without laminating them and have them write the form of symbiosis in the box or next to it. :) Hope you enjoy!

Sara Catapano's ambiguous forms discuss the complexities of organic life within the imagined environment they are created for; in some cases, she begins with a solid block of clay, carving into and through the material, exposing and leaving only the most essential tendrils for support and structure. Other works bring to life an imagined hybrid of micro/macro organisms with geological and biological flora and fauna from land and sea. Referencing the anatomical and parasitic residents of our natural world as a metaphor for the thoughts and feelings of the human condition, these bio-expressive forms are, in some ways, reactions and responses to social and personal experiences. Nikon International Small World Photomicrography Competition recently announced its list of winners for 2010. The competition began in 1974 as a means to recognize and applaud the efforts of those involved with photography through the light microscope. Peering into the small worlds of animal, plants and minerals using many techniques and different instruments, this year's entries brought us images of crystalline formations, fluorescent body parts, cellular structures and more, valuable in both their beauty and insight. The lovely folks at Nikon were kind enough to share some of their images here with us, be sure to click the link above to see all the winners.
