Honouring your body is a practiced art. Honouring your body is something many women struggle with throughout all stages of life (whether you’ve been pregnant or not). I’m a sucker for a good chocolate chip cookie. I’ve also become a bit of a cookie “snob” over the years and am extremely picky about what I like. They can’t be too crisp, too flat, too dense, or too sweet. I need the perfect balance. George W. Bush’s Cowboy Cookie is it. This week, I hosted a book club at my house (for my favorite book about this man) and had a whole line up of presidential foods. I had JFK’s fish chowder, Teddy Roosevelt’s clove cake, Barbara Bush’s mushroom quiche and her pecan pie, etc. I enjoyed every single one of them. But my very favorite food from that entire night was George W. Bush’s Cowboy Cookies. I don’t know if they were named after GW or if the name existed before they became a GW favorite? No idea. But, I do know that these cookies were perfection. Maybe it was the addition of both coconuts and oats to a classic, or maybe it was the crunchy and slightly salty cornflakes? Whatever it was, I’m telling you, these cookies were fabulous and totally hit the spot (thanks to my friend Amy for making them)! They were the perfect balance …

For over two decades, Phyllis Galembo has documented cultural and religious traditions in Africa and the African Diaspora. Traveling widely throughout western and central Africa, and regularly to Haiti, her subjects are participants in masquerade events—traditional African ceremonies and contemporary costume parties and carnivals—who use costume, body paint and masks to create mythic characters. Sometimes entertaining and humorous, often dark and frightening, her portraits document and describe the transformative power of the mask. With a title derived from the Haitian Creole wordmaské,meaningto wear a mask, this album features a selection of more than 100 of the best of Galembo's masquerade photographs to date, organized in country-based chapters, each with her own commentary. Now back in print by popular demand, the book is introduced by art historian and curator Chika Okeke-Agulu (himself a masquerade participant during his childhood in Nigeria), for whom Galembo's photographs raise questions about the survival and evolution of masquerade tradition in the 21st century. | Legend | Froydis Morgensen was far from a mystic. The legendary shieldmaiden had dedicated her whole life to hone her skills as a warrior, fighting with resolve, precision, and cunning against foes and monsters few would dare face, even amongst the fiercest of the Norse fighters. She was known as a pragmatic, if not a cynical warrior, and would often roll her eyes during the ancient rites that would be performed before the battle, relying on no power but the sharpness of her spear and the strength of her shield. That was before her injury, before that horserider slashed her neck open before she almost drowned in her own blood. But in the mists of unconsciousness, as she was dragged away by pain, blood loss, and suffocation... she saw something. Knowing her, it is hard to describe the surprise felt by the rest of her warband once she recovered from this gruesome injury. Before each battle, not only would she honor the gods and perform the rites, but she would call for Freyja to watch her fight, and she would gift each of her kills to the goddess as sacrifices or even recruits for her godly host. Often, Froydis would look at the skies with a zealous gaze, as if she was touched by visions, her face struck by awe or splendor. Little did they know, but on that day, at the edge of death, Froydis saw the Valkyries fly over the battlefield, collecting the souls of the fallen with the steel of their sacred spears. In a heartbreaking moment, she recognized Freyja herself amongst the death spirits, and felt the tip of her spear linger over her... but she was refused. She never knew if it simply wasn't her time, or if she was barred from the fields of Folkvangr as punishment for her ungodly life. This vision never left her. | Description | This fantasy leather armor set for LARP is a medieval styled female armor perfectly suited for shieldmaidens and nordic warriors.
